Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to spend time with Martyn Gibson, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

In some haste as we are going out for the day. I was asked weeks ago to put I've Killed the Vicar in as the new title but I agree with more recent comments that Peggy's funeral feels like old news now. Great line, though. Sorry not to have used Markie Malarkey, though. I've settled on something that will only make sense to people who were also youngish in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Here's a clue. If a certain person appears in tomorrow's episode the title will be relevant.

Over to you!

Quite possibly.
Adam - step son, 'borrowed' from the business, have clashed multiple times
Debbie - step daughter, lives in Hungary, (TG too busy to be a regular)
Kate - wild child, unreliable wrt managing the farm
Alice - late younger daughter, academic, good degree, has stopped drinking (?)
Ruari (sp) - not showed an interest in farming, too young at the moment

OK yes, agreed I suppose.

The Adam episode was weird at the time, but I guess placed to lead to the current plot.

Re Amber, why is no one, not even Neil, questioning the wisdom of George getting engaged to someone with whom he’s never been on a date with, never had a modicum of physical closeness with and only met - as an adult - a handful of times and then never for more than (?)30 minutes??

One can appreciate Amber’s parents pov too!

JanFebAndOnwards · 02/08/2025 10:31

I know there’s been one or two comments but nothing especially concerned!

And yes I know it occasionally happens with a) prisoners and b) this online generation, but I really hope those around the people concerned question it more!

JudyCoolibar · 02/08/2025 11:03

I wonder if Hazel's going to start charging rent for the shop given that she's had to spend loadsamoney on the dry rot? The SWs have clearly forgotten about insurance, again.

On another tack, how easily would Justin get planning permission for his warehouses? I guess he might make a case about a need for food storage, but why does it have to be built on farmland? Those warehouses can be absolutely vast.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 02/08/2025 11:17

Excitin’ though …

Said Chris. (Or something like that, anyway.) I’m helping the SWs out here, if they’re flailing around, but clearly it must be Alice and Chris who take over the farm.

They get back together. Stella is ousted. Alice and Chris each sell their HF cottages and somehow scrape enough to buy the HF house back. (Imagine Susan at this point …) David retires. Stella joins Pip to run Brookfield. Eventually Henry, Rosie, and Martha … (Not sure about Xander. Or LL.)

Godesstobe · 02/08/2025 11:25

I'm still not listening and I'm feeling like a better, less angry person as a result. But I see that Home Farm is back in play and I'm just imagining how THRILLED Susan will be if Christopher ends up living there with Alice.

This would be fantastic.

Poor Chris. Poor Stella. What has either of them done to deserve a life sentence?

Just started the wheat harvest here this afternoon.

It's oats here. I was looking forward to finally walking in the field but they've tickled (I don't know the proper term) the earth up immediately which makes me wonder if it'll be OSR again next year as I was told that doesn't need ploughed for. It'll be interesting to see.

I only listen to The Archers with half an ear and don't hear all the episodes so I'll probably dip in and out of the thread. I was guided here by @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g , thank you 🙂, from another thread where I suggested R4 were trying to get rid of all their listeners by offering such shit content, perhaps so they could invest that budget elsewhere.

Meantime, is Amber just after likes and clicks in her targetting of George or is there something else afoot?

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 02/08/2025 12:59

Totally with you on R4, @NebulousSadTimes. And thank you (and @muddyford)for the farming inserts. Hope you’ll find the thread becomes a regular habit!

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 02/08/2025 13:04

The thing is, unbelievable as the story might be, Amber and George have chemistry and are clearly scalding hot for each other, so I’m prepared to accept their relationship at face value. And hope it lasts and brings them both happiness.

(Jinxed it now …)

They have questioned it - Emma, Ed, Will, the Grundies and Carters. Given that George is in prison, and Amber thinks she knows everything, there isn’t any point going on about it nor wasting the time they have to speak to George - and they must know that the more they question him the more likely he is to do something stupid/irrevocable. They can cross the actual marriage bridge if they come to it.

That’s what I’m hearing, anyway.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 02/08/2025 13:12

I guess Jakob and Kate could buy the cottage Jakob currently rents from Chris.

Maybe Dane might buy the other - though it wouldn’t be big enough for Helen & Sons, so perhaps that won’t last.

Still no progress on the passing of Lower Loxley to Freddie. The SWs should be ashamed of their own spinelessness.

FizzingAda · 02/08/2025 13:50

Maybe George and Amber will be a 'practice marriage' like a Brian said for Chris and Alice's Vegas wedding.

I thought that prisoners didn't have access to the internet? In which case George cannot have been online chatting with Amber and being part of the online generation wouldn't really be relevant.

The term was 'starter marriage'.

CrashThere · 02/08/2025 15:39

The term was 'starter marriage'.

And it was to shut Jennifer up when she started wailing about how awful them having got married was. He didn't mean that he wanted the marriage to fail; he clearly thought that perhaps Jennifer would find the idea comforting.

CrashThere · 02/08/2025 18:51

'Good grief, I'm related to a Horrobin!' wasn't it?
I miss Jennydarling.

I miss The Archers. I listened religiously for decades and then just lost interest.
I don't think I care about them any more.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/08/2025 19:04

It was indeed a stunned "Good grief, Brian – I'm related to a Horrobin."

Fifteen years ago today, that was. 2nd August 2010.

Gonners · 02/08/2025 19:09

Brian always liked Christopher, didn't he? Not being the child of a drunkard and a jumped-up East End barmaid, he had no reason for bizarre snobbery.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/08/2025 19:15

He did like him, though he was surprised a couple of years earlier to discover that Christopher knew Lord Elbury as "Donald".

Gonners · 02/08/2025 20:02

Arf! Perhaps that helped?

If I had to describe Adam, pompous is the first word to spring to mind, rapidly followed by self-righteous and selfish. And (worst of all in a fictional character) dull! I could go on, but life is short. He and the equally-but-differently ghastly Ian richly deserve each other.

If I had to describe Adam in one word it would be tired

True Asking. So just my first category then.

Although the fact that Amber currently and George previously may have seen other examples of such online relationships and or marriages in the present or past could have directly or indirectly influenced their willingness to believe such a relationship could be feasible.
