Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to spend time with Martyn Gibson, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

In some haste as we are going out for the day. I was asked weeks ago to put I've Killed the Vicar in as the new title but I agree with more recent comments that Peggy's funeral feels like old news now. Great line, though. Sorry not to have used Markie Malarkey, though. I've settled on something that will only make sense to people who were also youngish in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Here's a clue. If a certain person appears in tomorrow's episode the title will be relevant.

Over to you!

It was rather shitty of Tracey to not be at her own party.

Good to hear Toby back though Pip poshes up her voice when she speaks to him.

A phone for a 7 year old is daft.

JanFebAndOnwards · 23/07/2025 23:50

Haven’t caught up here but just to say it’s quite common for non-resident dads to buy mobiles for their kids “so they can keep in touch”…
Very unhelpful for the mums of course.

MinnieBaldock · 24/07/2025 05:18

I haven't got any kids or Grankids so I don't know about these things but isn't 7 a bit young for a mobile?. Also I'm surprised Pip hasn't got Rosie one before as she is so wonderful.
Why have they changed Martin Gibson? He was an horrible nasty man ,now he is a jolly fine fellow.
You would think because Jolene kindly came to do the cocktails Tracy would have stayed for her party its a bit rude, but Jazzer should have not invited MG in the first place. After all the trouble Jazzer had gone through couldn't Tracy just ignore that M G was there? It's all a bit Meh!
Also Rochelle was mentioned, Rex missing her!, he hardly knew her, he is so desperate for a relationship that anyone would have done. Please let's not hear Rochelles dolcet tones again.

WitcheryDivine · 24/07/2025 08:43

Why don’t they just get a landline if Toby wants Rosie to be able to call him? It’s like people have forgotten they exist.

I am still Team Tracey - she stuck by what she said she was going to do then came back after a couple of hours and joined in.

Brefugee · 24/07/2025 08:47

oh no. Are we moving towards Pip and Toby having a relationship?
At least no Kenton. The way the actor speaks really drives me away.

JoelenesParrot · 24/07/2025 09:04

Did MG have anything on under his towel? He said to Toby something about now Pip is going we can remove our towels so was he just embarrassed about her seeing him in his trunks or was he naked underneath? Toby hadn’t taken his trunks with him to the party so presumably was either wearing his boxers under the towel or nothing at all. Less of a problem as Pip has already seen it all although if he had left them on then I think the boxers would end up sweaty and not very nice to wear when he put the rest of his clothes on. Presumably Pip was in her swimming costume (she’s got a fairly good figure but her togs are likely to be a fairly dated and a sensible cut with a horrible pattern). May be it’s even a costume Ruth years ago? Anyway, perhaps I have given this too much thought?

I laughed at MG shouting out who wants a French Kiss. Silly I know but I enjoyed it. Agree that his personality transplant is ludicrous.

WitcheryDivine · 24/07/2025 09:09

I thought maybe they were laying the groundwork for Toby to come back and run the pub with Jolene since Kenton seems to be increasingly unable and Lilian is too old and too rich to want to be there much.

WitcheryDivine · 24/07/2025 09:11

I am slightly wondering what the thinking is with David and Kenton - brothers - both being victims of traumatic stranger attacks resulting in MH after effects within a really short time. Just seems weird.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 24/07/2025 09:16

They’ve forgotten that Lilian is old and rich, though. They’ve turned her into a drudge.

There could well be ‘intentions’ with Toby feeling he’s missing out on his daughter’s childhood. But how would it work, since his dad needs him for the wine business? Could he perhaps move it to Ambridge. (We know how that goes … Don’t we, Natasha?)

Is it just me who can't even begin to imagine how a mobile sauna would be a hit at a house party? Isn't the point of a sauna that you get to plunge into cold water between sessions - or at least step under a shower. Getting dressed up in my finery then going to sit in a box and get hot and sweaty with nowhere to rinse off afterwards does not sound appealing at all. Just one of many things that does not ring true at the moment...

It's an awful idea.

echt · 24/07/2025 09:30

I agree, @LillianGish, it's beyond weird. Just for starters I would imagine a good number of people would not be at all comfortable being semi-clothed in front of others. Why have a party predicated on pissing your guests off?

Brefugee · 24/07/2025 09:38

a mobile sauna where i am would probably go down well. But Germans like their saunas "textile free" so no cozzies or budgie smugglers. And friendship groups (male & female - often mixed) often go to saunas together.

But that's the culture here. So. In UK - never ever would i do that.
I don't sauna anyway because i hate being hot and sweaty

MathiasBroucek · 24/07/2025 09:44

Why can't Fat Rosie have a dumb phone? She can call and text Tobeee without looking at food p*rn

Yes, where's the cooling-down bit?!

Ha yes - I remember that well from my years in Berlin. Our neighbours had a sauna, but they had a plunge pool in the garden. Or they would roll in the snow in winter. I could cope with the nudity in a health club or pool where I didn't know anyone, but would draw the line at groups of friends or worse still colleagues Blush My friend, who had grown up in East Germany was the opposite - she said she could never feel comfortable swimming in a swimsuit and preferred to sit at the edge of the lake when we took the kids swimming in summer.

BridgetofKildare · 24/07/2025 12:39

Abra1t · 24/07/2025 09:59

I think they provide galvanised bath tubs on request. They look like animal feed troughs so maybe Jazzer sourced them from the pig farm.

muddyford · 24/07/2025 12:54

Finnish friends have a sauna in their garden, in a sort of shed. They and their adult children use it in the all together . Relieved I have never been invited.

CarlaH · 24/07/2025 13:26

I really don't understand this mobile phone issue. If Rosie wants to talk to Toby she can just ask her mum to lend her her phone.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 24/07/2025 19:09

Oh give me strength. It's Komedy Kapers.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/07/2025 19:20

Blast. Pip managed not to notice how completely fed up Stella has been getting, and blamed the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling on the harvest.

Gonners · 24/07/2025 19:28

So Martyn Gibson has (or more likely has not, given the state of him) had sex with some friend of Tracy's who has never been mentioned before. Hold the front page!

Stella does seem to blow a bit hot and cold, in the sense of going from thoroughly pissed off which anyone less self-absorbed than Pip might notice, to sort of placatory and needy. I know her job situation is shaky, but she must know by now that trying to talk to Pip about anything without every conversation being dragged back to Row-Zee is impossible.

muddyford · 24/07/2025 19:30

I couldn't work out why Pip was saying Stella shouldn't interfere with Rosie's upbringing, but wanted her to be called Mum. I think Stella turned down that dubious distinction, but the tap was running.

Now, don’t go getting all sensible. 🙂
