Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to spend time with Martyn Gibson, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

In some haste as we are going out for the day. I was asked weeks ago to put I've Killed the Vicar in as the new title but I agree with more recent comments that Peggy's funeral feels like old news now. Great line, though. Sorry not to have used Markie Malarkey, though. I've settled on something that will only make sense to people who were also youngish in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Here's a clue. If a certain person appears in tomorrow's episode the title will be relevant.

Over to you!

No-one says their favourite dessert is packet strawberry blancmange when booking a B 'n' B.

Why was Jolene looking after the shop?

Snell was so ungracious with Dane.

Pa Malik is clearly no use at all at this fête malarky.

echt · 21/07/2025 21:53

I was aghast at the birthday week too.

The new version of BBC Radio 4 for the benighted Commonwealth is to click on a document agreeing privacy - have I signed an NDA? and bloody adverts at the top of the screen.

Otherwise all the same.

I can live with it.

MinnieBaldock · 22/07/2025 05:06

I thought Lynda was giving up doing the fate and Christmas stuff, she said this a few years ago. She dosnt like anyone having better ideas then her tried and trusted ones.
Yeah Stella will tell Pip she is getting a dog and Pip will poo poo the idea because it would up set Rosie and Stella will say, "eff you and Rosie and the horse you rode in on"! If only.
I wonder if it is Rosie saying all this stuff or if its Pip putting ideas in the kids head because its what Pip wants. Oh and who cares anyway.

MinnieBaldock · 22/07/2025 05:07

"Fete"

JoelenesParrot · 22/07/2025 07:53

That episode was just full of randoms- Pa Malik, Dane, Stella. Lynda is not an Archer although she has been knocking around a long time, which means Joelene was the character closest to the First Family and she is a blow-in pirate from the Seven Seas! Also, since when are Stella and Lynda best friends? Anyway, it was all very forgettable and very very boring.

I am currently dealing with two sick cats - d and v - it’s all been very messy. The vets have been unable to offer much help- where is Alistair when you need him? I need a Tortoise-style recovery to happen sometime soon.

ExitPursuedByABare · 22/07/2025 08:41

As the Grey Gables fete involvement came about because of a chat over the parlous state of the village Green, does Dane presume the fete will be held at Grey Gables and has Lynda realised this?

JudyCoolibar · 22/07/2025 09:14

BeatriceBatchelor · 21/07/2025 18:26

I do not understand what Stella sees in Pip

I think Pip is much keener on Stella.

Pip still hasn't got over the novelty of being the only lesbian in the village.

JudyCoolibar · 22/07/2025 09:16

As Grey Gables is making so much money that it can sponsor the village fete, I do hope poor Oliver is getting some return on his investment, especially what he had to spend to bail the business out when Adil messed up as manager.

Abra1t · 22/07/2025 09:23

Don’t they still have old-fashioned prep boarding schools for children like Rosie? What age does Mallory Towers start? She needs the rock-pool swimming and airy dorms.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 22/07/2025 09:40

Are you trying to wake Rob Titchener from the dead, @Abra1t? Grin

The boarding preps I know best are thriving and very not ‘old fashioned’. But fewer and fewer UK parents are willing to have a child board before they’re at least ten or eleven. And, while it seemed reasonable for Ruairi to board, there’s really no obvious reason why Pip would want it for Rosie.

Toby might though!

Actually, it might be something the Fairgrandfather would like. And offer to pay for.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle
Why was Jolene looking after the shop?

Because Susan was having difficulty with a delivery at the back. Jolene took Stella's money for whatever it was to give to Susan when she came back out. Meanwhile if Jolene had not been there, Susan's over-stocking could have been opportunistically solved by hoards of people who took what they wanted but didn't leave cash on the counter for her....

(NB: there is no back way to the shop for a delivery to go in by.)

Gonners · 22/07/2025 10:50

(NB: there is no back way to the shop for a delivery to go in by.)

That would explain Susan's difficulty with it, I suppose.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 22/07/2025 11:01

How can there be no delivery entrance when there’s no difficulty with access to the back of the shop? And surely that would have been part of the reorganisation when it became a community enterprise, even if there was no such entrance before? (Which I don’t believe for one second.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/07/2025 11:06

Should have clarified: there is no road access behind the shop, so deliveries (except perhaps by handcart) would not be done there. And if a delivery were being done. the delivery vehicle would be parked out front, on the road.

Sidebeforeself · 22/07/2025 11:36

Speaking of shop stock, Ive noticed nobody can buy anything without explaining why
” I need someone pasta for the boy’s tea’
’I need those chocolate biscuits that Keira likes” etc . It really annoys me . BUT not as much as every time someone’s mobile phone rings.. “I’d better get this”. They ALL say that.

BeatriceBatchelor · 22/07/2025 13:32

To my ears, Dane sounds like he's Harrison putting on a different voice.

Undercover, spying on Grey Gables?

JoelenesParrot · 22/07/2025 17:38

The actor playing Dane clearly hasn’t quite settled on what voice to use. He sounded very different last night to the man with the window cleaning father who Oliver and Ian first met.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 22/07/2025 18:05

I was thinking the same, @JoelenesParrot. Clearly their audience feedback suggested they lose the cheeky chappie persona.

Or maybe the actor just couldn’t maintain that energy. He sounded distinctly subdued last night.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/07/2025 18:20

Maybe he has realised just what a hopeless task he's faced with.

Gonners · 22/07/2025 21:54

Maybe it's some sort of test to see if any of the listeners even care? This sort of stuff happens every time they introduce a new character, or change an actor. I've been listening on and off since the 1960s and find it (very) mildly amusing.

Is anyone overseas still accessing Sounds? Mine is still working fine and I am in NZ.

Very subdued compared to when he was first on the programme. Probably the effect of going out with Helen, that would be enough to grind anyone down. His accent is all over the shop too.

Me. I'm in Melbourne and it's the same as usual bar an Australian ad at the top and the bit that shows how many minutes had been used is white, not red. I listen on my laptop after the UK broadcast.

I suspect it's listening live that's the issue.
