Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Harrison to hasten home, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to John Donne for the title inspiration. The funeral of the century beckons. How much of it do we think we will hear? Kate confirmed tonight that Shula, Debbie, Noli and Sipho are all coming. If we hear one peep from any of them I'll be amazed. Bets on Hazel turning up?

Over to you!

I also got the impression Annabelle was playing him along for some reason, but I may have hallucinated that…

In that case I hallucinated too.

I was going to comment on @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g's hunch that Amber is in fact 31 and does not have rich parents, but then I thought, "No, I'm better than this. We all are. This SL is so ridiculous that we shouldn't pander to the dreadful SWs by even attempting to make sense of it. It will only encourage them to keep insulting our intelligence like this."

I know it's a completely trivial point but if I heard it correctly Martyn was saying he had never worn a formal shirt except for work? How can this possibly be true of a middle class, prosperous businessman in his 60s? Has he worn a T shirt/ straitjacket/ comedy apron to all his bridge games, rotary club dinners, masonic initiations, anniversary parties, lunch at the captain's table etc etc?

I thought it was a floral shirt. That would be out of character.

Sidebeforeself · 05/07/2025 20:27

Please tell me you are all joking re the Amber storyline? I mean, ow on earth are they going to shoehorn Joy into the nuptials?

Gonners · 05/07/2025 20:28

The problem with the floral/formal shirt question is that someone would have to listen again to find out. And sorry, but if I'm not prepared to take one for the team on this important issue then I don't feel it would be reasonable to ask anyone else to do it.

I'm also pretty sure he said 'floral shirt' but listening again would indeed be taking things too far.

Gonners · 05/07/2025 21:46

Also, has any man in his right mind worn a floral shirt since the late-1960s? (Not that I'm suggesting that men in the late-60s were in their right minds.)

Maid of Honour. Or perhaps she does a bit of celebrant work in her spare time. She may even be ordained for all we know.

I wish we were joking. He proposed to Amber at the end of visiting time. Dropped on one knee in front of all the other convicts and their visitors and the prison officers were presumably cheering with everyone else when she said yes. Envy <<< not envy

ExitPursuedByABare · 05/07/2025 22:18

I might listen again tonight as I was grunting in pain trying to get comfy in bed whilst listening last night.

My husband has at least 3 floral shirts which he wears often.

It was definitely floral shirt.

My late husband had a dizzying array of floral shirts, invariably UK-made and linen, kept for the weekend and dress-down Friday in a pretty formal government environment. This would be 1990 - 2000 mid-teens. It certainly raised eyebrows in Melbourne but he was a confident man and couldn't give a stuff
After he died, I arranged for close male friends to pick out a shirt or two which they were very pleased to do.

I kept the best ones for me.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/07/2025 06:41

That's lovely, @echt. I like floral shirts on a man. Mr Gasp doesn't like them for his own wear. Plain and functional are his watchwords. Ah well. He has other qualities.

As any fule know, Joy used to be the North-East's premier wedding planner, and the Jennifer Lopez character in the film is based on her.

And she could also do the catering, with her special luxury range of smoked-salmon filled mini-Yorkshire puddings.

Oh, and she makes wedding cakes too, didn’t I say….?

I agree.

Having started the Dane storyline which could have led to something a bit more interesting regarding Helen's attitude to men, her relationship with Ian, how Dane was getting on at GG etc, we haven't heard a dicky bird apart from, I think, one mention of her going on another date and Helen telling Tom it was ok to talk to P&T about it.

Given how nosy everyone was at the start yet no one has mentioned it since, are we now supposed to believe that Helen is now miraculously in a happy relationship with him and the next thing we know they'll be buying a house together?

Yet another example of a silly story that is then dropped completely. It doesn't even have to involve the actors, even a throwaway line such as" Helen told me she and Dane are getting on really well" would at least give some hint of other lives continuing and would be realistic.

I'm actually surprised Joy hasn't been involved with Helen as a therapist, relationship advisor and life coach, given her endless talents in all areas of life.

I think we know by now that it won't have been dropped completely. The whole point of having a long-running soap is that you can start SLs off and then put them on the back burner, occasionally bringing them to the forefront before they reach the big conclusion. Witness the whole original Helen/Knob relationship, and Alice's alcoholism.

Brefugee, I like the All About The Archers podcast. They are not as sycophantic towards the SW as the BBC one. They do cast interviews every few weeks as well. The only in jokes involve Phillippa's obsession with food and Quentin finding it boring.

thanks, I'll try that one. I tried On the Couch again but they are just a bunch of people wittering on about their own birthdays and stuff, and i remembered that's why i found it unlistenable in the first place.

I really liked the Cider Shed, but clearly their Patreon is taking off and so, fair enough, they are spending more time doing content for that. But now they are skipping covering an episode i cba to listen.

anyone else in 'forrin' just got their sounds app culled?

Mumblechum0 · 07/07/2025 17:02

Yep. South of France and can’t listen outside uk apparently. I guess I’ll just have to get a fortnight ’s worth of dross in one go.

mine has been culled for a while. But more devastating is that i have a new laptop and iPlayer suddenly doesn't work. And the Sewing Bee starts tomorrow.
