Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Harrison to hasten home, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to John Donne for the title inspiration. The funeral of the century beckons. How much of it do we think we will hear? Kate confirmed tonight that Shula, Debbie, Noli and Sipho are all coming. If we hear one peep from any of them I'll be amazed. Bets on Hazel turning up?

Over to you!

I'm amazed they didn’t have to apply for probate for Peggy’s estate but nothing has been realistic recently

When did they say they didn't have to apply for probate?

dotdotdotdash · 22/06/2025 14:26

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g This has surely got to be worked out at some point; one of the family being favoured but keeping quiet, a dodgy solicitor? It’s annoying me because I want to know. I am enjoying Brian and Miranda wrangling with one another though I agree her voice is ridiculous!

I assumed it's just the actor's normal voice. When you realise her mother was Celia Johnson, it seems pretty likely.

LillianGish · 23/06/2025 08:52

By the time we get round to Rochelle's trial Joy will no doubt have revealed she is a fully qualified barrister and will be dusting off her wig to defend her daughter. I thought that was the worst episode for quite some time - the return of Harrison was particularly disappointing.

Bruisername · 23/06/2025 08:57

It was so bad.

I love cricket but this focus on it is so irritating. I’m guessing we are going to end up with Lynda having to beg the oldies to play and they’ll save the day at some point

highlighted how good the previous weeks have been in comparison

Joy is definitely Mrs Rabbit. Have we discovered that she drives the school bus and is a volunteer firefighter yet?

OnlyFrench · 23/06/2025 09:46

@JudyCoolibareveryone knew how much they were getting less than a week after she died, the charity included, and it’s been mentioned that a solicitor is dealing with the will. Highly unlikely all that would have happened if probate was required.

lots of chuckles from reading this thread this morning! 👏

did anyone else think for a fleeting second that it might be Adil appearing miraculously on the green to save the cricket? As ridiculous as his fiancée/wife/nervous breakdown/oscillations of competence storylines were, I enjoyed him as a character and it would be lovely to hear from him again.

WitcheryDivine · 23/06/2025 10:40

Do you think they’re trying to redo the story with Kirsty’s builder who appropriately appeared to be a complete brick until it became obvious he was a slave owner? ie they want to spring a big surprise about St Joy being evil after making her undispensible.

Maybe she’s running all the county lines in Borsetshire and will try to recruit Henry and Khalil.

Bruisername · 23/06/2025 10:41

I think they think they’ve done that with the big reveal about Rochelle’s childhood

i wouldn't mind adil coming back - they gave him some stupid sl but I could believe him as a character

so it’s not that I’m against new characters it’s just the relentless of joy and that she just seems so one dimensional

I’m not sure they did. It’s just Peggy out of her huge funds kept one account with about £5K in it to be distributed between a list of offspring. That could be done easily without needing to consider Death duty etc.
The charity could be the “residual” legacy or some other charity could be. But if they are they won’t know how much yet, but most charities are very grateful for receiving a residual legacy.

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/06/2025 11:26

Bloody Joy. Just go away.

NetballHoop · 23/06/2025 11:29

Could a will have something in it to say that only those who actually go on the pre-paid holiday will get a share of a much larger inheritance than the £200ish that they've all been given so far?

That could lead to some spectacular infighting.

Bruisername · 23/06/2025 11:32

I thought they said that the holiday money only comes through if they all go and if anyone doesn’t then the money goes to charity

Sidebeforeself · 23/06/2025 16:38

For the love of God, will they get rid of Joy!!

I thought that too, but to be honest I'm not paying much attention to these idiotic details.

I don't know what probate it, but I think Kate has inherited the lion's share. Brian just said " Kate has got an email but she thought it was a mistake". That could mean " because it's a cool three mil"

Bruisername · 23/06/2025 19:16

Joy again 🙄. It’s so tiresome and now she’s entrenched herself at the bull. So sick of her giving advice

and what’s fallons problem - why on earth would you employ someone who has done that - no matter how desperate. And her birthday story 🙄

and since when would pip want to discuss with Kenton. She’s so needy

am I being unreasonable? If the sw do look on here then please kill off Joy

and bloody marky. I thought he’d been convicted

Texelspreadsheet · 23/06/2025 19:23

Why does Joy think she’s in position to give relationship advice? And why would Fallon unburden herself to her?! Ugh.

muddyford · 23/06/2025 19:55

Another tripe-filled episode. Joy now being at the centre of things in The Bull makes me want to throw up. Into one (or more) of the miniature Yorkshire puddings.

Yes, I did wonder this. That would set the cat among the pigeons. Tho they’d no doubt all get distracted and start droning on about the cricket again. And I also don’t understand Joy’s universal popularity; or Rex’s strange passion for Rochelle. It’s so implausible!

Precision spewing! It could become A Thing, if it isn’t already.
I would pay the Implausible Black Country Baddies a reasonable amount to slitJoy’s throat. Double if they manage to implicate the fool Kenton.

Bruisername · 23/06/2025 20:59

Omg that’s an amazing idea

Joy will be on site when they turn up again and Kenton will hide and Joy will be like ‘I can fight off 10 men and their dogs’ but she can’t and she’ll die.

JoelenesParrot · 23/06/2025 21:21

I have written to Feedback asking them to put up a writer for interview so they can explain why Joy is in every storyline these days. I doubt they will take any notice.

But Kate was whinging after that about it only being threepence ha'penny.

It makes more sense than Pip unburdening herself to Kenton. Joy and Fallon went to a concert together on the night of the accident and they may have bonded over that.

Texelspreadsheet · 23/06/2025 21:38

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle yes good point.
