Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd swipe right on Dane, the new Grey Gables manager, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radioaddicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radioaddicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @WitcheryDivine for the title inspiration. Over to you!

Re asking for Angela, I think the point is the brevity of the exchange. To the scary man, it wouldn’t look any more complicated than ordering a drink or getting bathroom directions. And it’s a pre-made request so you don’t have to formulate the words while in a state of high panic.

Madcats · 22/05/2025 10:47

Thank you for the new thread. I think Oliver should sell his share of GG and retire gracefully to potter around The Bull and village green from time to time. My Dane tolerance levels are rapidly diminishing. Why can’t the hotel have a friendly young couple in their mid-40’s run it!!!

ExitPursuedByABare · 22/05/2025 10:59

Checking in. Thanks for the new thread @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Don’t be so sensible!

Hercisback1 · 22/05/2025 11:07

Thanks for the thread.

Gonners · 22/05/2025 11:45

Hang on, is this Dane character supposed to be managing the place? Even if it's only temporarily, he seems a bit rough! I mean, Roy wasn't notable for his debonair interpersonal skills, but ....

TottersBlithely · 22/05/2025 11:49

I miss Roy. Suddenly. I’d love to hear him having a quiet chat with someone sensible in The Bull again …

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/05/2025 11:53

Thanks for the new thread, Gasp0de. You got up early; I got up late and have only just seen it, and it is on its second page already!

DeanElderberry · 22/05/2025 11:59

it would be good if Dane and Darren stayed, and Daniel came back, and a few women - Doreen, Darina and Danni, showed up. And a non-binary Daire with a voice that gives nothing away.

Then if Ben and Beth got back together . . .

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/05/2025 12:06

Teetering horrifying close to HWMNBN there, Dean. Shock

Datestamps don't lie, do they! I woke up in the small hours and couldn't get back to sleep. I like the longer days but they play havoc with my sleep.

We haven't heard much from Bess lately, have we? Has David shot her?

Godesstobe · 22/05/2025 13:34

I've just engaged a tree surgeon to cut some branches off a huge, very old magnolia tree. Typical of the tree surgeons I have used over the years - very middle class and dyslexic. I'm looking forward to comparing his skills with Ed'nEm's. (Won't happen for a few weeks as I'm going on holiday first.)

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Am I incredibly cold to be finding Lillian (77 years) being so upset by the death of her 100 year old mother odd? Sadly when in one's late 70s most older relatives will already be dead as will quite a few contemporaries. I'm only in my forties and myself and friends have all lost one or both parents already. This is probably making me unsympathetic

Bruisername · 22/05/2025 18:27

She was very close to her mother and spent a lot of time with her so I think it’s natural it’s hit her hard

As in a lot of time from what she said. So it’s not just losing her mother but having big gaps in her day

TottersBlithely · 22/05/2025 18:43

You think it’s odd that someone would be upset at the death of their mother, @TopographicalTime?

You don’t stop feeling just because you’re in your 70s!

I actually find Lilian’s ongoing shock and grief quite realistically portrayed.

DeanElderberry · 22/05/2025 18:43

The longer you've had them the harder it is to lose them.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/05/2025 18:54

I can see what @TopographicalTime means. I'm 70 and have lost both my parents. I grieved but it is the natural order of things and can't be too much of a shock especially when the parent is 100.

Ambridge · 22/05/2025 19:06

Thanks for the new thread @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

My DM was not that far off 100 when she died and I was bereft. Just saying.

CapitalAtRisk · 22/05/2025 19:08

Sorry, just dipping in and catching up, are we assuming that Kate has inherited all Peggy's money?

CapitalAtRisk · 22/05/2025 19:08

I don't think she has. The night Lilian told them about the holiday was the same night Brian was telling his lot about it and Kate would have been there. She'd also been irritated because Adam didn't go to her for yoga classes, so has clearly been in communication with the rest of her family and would undoubtedly have said something.

It's a ridiculous storyline because Lilian and Tony have obviously been communicating with the solicitor in order to know about the holiday, Hilda's care and Christine's care fees( which the SW have forgotten her son is paying) so they will know if there's any residuary estate left and who the beneficiary is. It's unbelievable that the solicitor wouldn't have told them what's in their own mother's Will.

God, are we going to have to hear every detail of the tedious Helen dating storyline. Presumably she's going to be the only person that goes online dating and immediately finds a long term relationship, otherwise why have they brought the awful Dane in. She's bound to jump in head first and in a few weeks those poor boys will have yet another stepfather.

CapitalAtRisk · 22/05/2025 19:41

Thanks, I must have missed an episode or two over the last couple of weeks.

JoelenesParrot · 22/05/2025 20:12

Lilian is hardly spinning it out. We haven’t even had the funeral. It’s a massive change and you only ever get one mum. I don’t think L is overdoing it. It’s very very early days. Even by soap standards.

Gonners · 22/05/2025 20:26

DeanElderberry · 22/05/2025 18:43

Not necessarily true. It depends very much on the parent. My lovely dad died relatively young (at 63) when I was 35 and although it was expected (effing cancer!) my sister and I mourned him and still email each other "Happy Birthday, Daddy" every year. When our mother died at almost 90 I rang sis (who lives on the other side of the world) and said "Tragic news ... brace yourself! You're an orphan." She laughed.
