Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like The Archers to be wall to wall election conversations for the next month, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Agree. There are so many SL ticking along - we don’t need this one

RegimentalSturgeon · 10/06/2024 10:28

Is this an unusually good slow-motion story about a mental health collapse?

Given Burns’ bizarre, indeed creepy, behaviour towards Fallon when the character first appeared, Occam’s razor suggests he is, and always has been, a complete dickhead.

Bruisername · 10/06/2024 10:31

The way Kenton and Jolene are going on about wha a good bloke he is, not taking sides, like a son made me wonder if he will do something and Fallon won’t feel she will be believed

but I don’t think they will do a dv sl

Fink · 10/06/2024 10:53

It's not only Harrison I'm worried about; why is Alan turning into such an idiot? First Rob's baptism and now this, not to mention the weirdness over Jakob and the farmers' stand up comedy. The man has been successfully married twice and presumably had years of experience dealing pastorally with parishioners' marital difficulties: he can't possibly think that a certificate and memorial service will help to heal Harrison and Fallon's relationship!

Bruisername · 10/06/2024 11:12

Tbf he doesn’t really know fallons feelings on it and he did say he needed to see her too

I thought that was only because Alan said he had to.

I completely understand the reasons for the certificates and funerals for people who have lost much wanted babies and also for people who have unhappily decided to terminate but I don't think Fallon would be keen on the idea in these circumstances. I think she would be infuriated by the idea of a service.

they may have no legal status but how many people would know that and just take it for granted that if you have the document it’s factual

This is like people who buy themselves a degree online, or an ordination. You don't have to produce any evidence you are entitled to those things, just pay someone to send to a fancy bit of paper. In this case no medical evidence that there was ever a pregnancy at all is required, from what is said on that website.

Why people don't just cut out the expensive bit and simply start to call themselves "the Rev." using a bit of expensive heavy-duty paper they have printed a suitably foofy-looking certificate on I don't know, and I similarly don't know what is to prevent Harrison from printing out some sort of death certificate for his wife's non-pregnancy, framing it and putting it on the wall. Except that with luck he would end up wearing the frame round his neck after Fallon smashed it over his head. (Which is what I hope will happen to this thing Harrison has sent off for. NB, Fallon: A box of matches can be obtained at the Village Shop, I expect...)

Bruisername · 10/06/2024 12:58

I had assumed they were issued by the hospital or something. I have no objection to the principle but I can see many situations a manipulative or abusive person could use one maliciously or a mentally ill person could use it in a way that isn’t helpful to them

ive mentioned before the 2 trees near me where people can put something up to remember a baby loss - I often stop and read them and there are always new ones or new ones to mark an anniversary. It’s very moving.

however in fallons case it really was a contraceptive failure in a woman who does not feel the loss. It was most likely not even viable and it sounds like it was extremely early. That is completely different to a woman having a miscarriage of a much wanted baby. I don’t like the way the sw are trying to conflate the two. Harrison’s very welcome to grieve the fact he won’t be a dad but they have put much more on this than it medically was.

also sounds like Ed and Emma have blown through wills cash

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 10/06/2024 13:12

https://www.tommys.org/about-us/news-views/everything-you-need-know-about-governments-baby-loss-certificates is the website I referred to, and probably the one Harrison would have referred to as well.

Since at least one third of all pregnancies are known to miscarry before twelve weeks in utero, (and probably there is also a largish number which does so before the woman realises they were a pregnancy at all), there is scope for an extremely large number of such certificates as this to be issued.

(GovUK figures say there were 605,479 live births and 2,433 stillbirths in England and Wales in 2022. Someone else can do the maths on this, but as well as the ones that figures suggests, someone might be eligible for two or three a year if she was TTC and failing repeatedly. Which is horrible, but there it is.)

I can see the situation where a man tried to stop his partner having an abortion and then decided he to do this to get back at her. You see from time to time men who think they should have any say in this matter.

The Scottish version of this wouldn't allow that as only the person who was pregnant can make a submission. The English version is open to abuse

👆What Lillian said.

On another topic, why oh why oh why (as they say) after the multi-£££££ refit of GG, sacking of established loyal staff, bragging about its luxury upgrade, etc etc etc, is there NOBODY ON RECEPTION? It makes zero sense!

I think they said there was a problem with their rota but don’t have they numerous managers, none of whom are Lily, whose job is to sort that out. Not only that but someone would be finishing their shift and need to handover and would notice there was no one to ruddy hand over TO.

Bruisername · 10/06/2024 14:11

Nothing about GG makes sense

how long before ednem are asking Will for more money?

Nope. Just Roy (soon to be known as Рой and never seen again) it seems. Perhaps he screwed it up on purpose, as a parting shot.

BeatriceBatchelor · 10/06/2024 14:25

Did Ed say that'd use Ed's money for an Emma van or get a bank loan?

Can't remember.

Bruisername · 10/06/2024 14:36

He said they would use the rest of the money and then get a loan for the rest. Implication being there’s not much left

BeatriceBatchelor · 10/06/2024 14:39

Thanks @Bruisername . He really is a dope.

Bruisername · 10/06/2024 19:15

So Denise is on holiday. Is she going to get over alastair

lily is unbearable. Does she have to do that accent - she’s doing a Harrison and making a caricature

Poor Duke. Makes me feel sad to think of him in pain on his own (I know I know)

a bit odd that the hotel hinges completely on Roy

i don’t really need to hear the sordid details of Paul’s boring boyfriend. Are we going down the stereotype route?

JanglyBeads · 10/06/2024 19:19

Who wrote that rubbish???I

Why on earth would you not get an actual.vet to break that news to Oliver, rather than a young vet nurse?

And the last line made no sense, why would Etienne's msg mean he was dumping Paul?!

TottersDeterminedlyTowardsThePollingStation · 10/06/2024 19:20

Does ‘opening up the relationship’ mean becoming non-exclusive, or threesomes?

Either way, I hope it’s so disastrous it propels Paul straight into the arms of Ruairi (when he brings Alice home).

Gonners · 10/06/2024 19:22

Do you hate Ruairi that much, @TottersDeterminedlyTowardsThePollingStation ?

TottersDeterminedlyTowardsThePollingStation · 10/06/2024 19:22

But Lilian gave Oliver the news, @JanglyBeads. Not Paul.

The 🔮 says it can't see anything. It is of the opinion that there is no future in any of the current s/l's.

It's gone all cloudy Sad

Have you tried turning it off and then on again?
