Spoilers thread for The Archers. All Archers listeners are welcome here, whether you post on our main Archers thread or not. There's just one rule: please keep all spoiler-related discussion in this thread and do not spill the beans on the main Archers thread.

We usually add the BBC teasers and cast lists for forthcoming episodes as they
become available, plus the Radio Times and Daily Mail previews when possible.
Feel free to add anything else you come across, e.g. cast news, scriptwriter
tweets!

Just joining the thread, I've binge listened to two Sunday omnibus editions today and omg! I so wanted Fallon to be pregnant, Chris is a Saint and poor Alice is in a very black place. Chelsea in the tea room will be hilarious 😂
Is George lying because he doesn't have his licence? And wasn't insured for the car? It would be simple to tell the truth about Alice opening the car door while in motion, he's young and probably scared he will be blamed for causing the accident. He was helping Alice get home safe poor boy.
I need to stay off this thread until next week now, I like the omnibus when I'm walking on a Monday morning 🌄

Best head for the main thread, then, @oakleaffy! I'm sorry to hear about your friend's relative. That must be tough.

I wasn’t aware this was a spoilers thread!

Yes, re Alcoholism, he has caused so much anxiety and anguish to his family… but like Alice, he too probably hates himself.

Drinking probably comes from
a place of pain.

Maybe I’d better dash off to the other thread.

Thanks!

I too binge-listened while on a dog walk
I remember a long time ago when one of the main young characters, John Archer was killed by a tractor
Must have been 25 yrs plus ago-
i listed with a friend- and we were both horrified!

Ditto when Nigel, lovely Nigel fell off a roof and died.

oakleaffy · 15/05/2024 12:43

Thank you so much @TottersBlankly
I got addicted to the archers in 1990’s when I met some “New age travellers “ who had helped me with a wood burning stove.

I was going to call round to see them one Sunday morning and they said “ Not before 12, as we Arch Out”

I was puzzled, and they said “ We listen to the Archers”

I thought they were joking-

But listened myself- Peggy was interested in meeting an old War boyfriend she knew who gave her his zippo lighter-
After that I was hooked!

DeanElderberry · 15/05/2024 12:51

Con!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/05/2024 13:07

That was a good long time ago! Was it a very young Kate who forged a letter from Peggy and sent it to Con to get him to come to Ambridge?

It was! That was in 1992 when Kate and Helen were being the Blossom Hill Gang. Conn Kortchmar was his name.

oakleaffy · 15/05/2024 15:40

Kate ( Original) refused to re take her Chemistry GCSE!

I do love “Kate”, despite her being so insufferable.

The Grundy family also grew cannabis for a while I think?
Or was that Kate?

That was Ed and Jazzer, in a barn belonging to Tony and using Bridge Farm electricity. Kate may have done as well, but the idea of her sticking to a long-term project like that seems somewhat unlikely. (Ed and Jazzer got caught rather than losing interest.)

DeanElderberry · 15/05/2024 17:12

Kate had a ghastly boyfriend who (like Harry) was viewed favourably by her parents because he was posh. He had an interesting pot plant which they admired, and gave Jenny and Brian delicious brownies that made them all giggly.

Gibson I think.

We were supposed to think it was cute. I think.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/05/2024 17:36

I think Gibson was the one who gave Kate a bottle of pills (on which she overdosed by mixing them with whisky) as a Christmas present.

NippyCrab · 15/05/2024 18:54

Aw I wish I could go back and listen from the archives from the start.

DeanElderberry · 15/05/2024 19:55

I sometimes wonder what useful or sensible things I'd have brain-space for if I wasn't crammed with Archers trivia.

MsCheeryble · 16/05/2024 09:03

With Chris bidding a sad goodbye next week and Alice disappearing off the cast lists, it does look like she's off to rehab, unless she gets locked up. I did wonder whether they were going to resolve the storyline to enable her to realise she's not quite such an awful person as she thinks and hence worth rehab, but as the sad goodbye is tomorrow that would require an incredibly busy 13 minutes tonight.

DeanElderberry · 16/05/2024 09:27

I live in dread that the sad goodbye will be Bartleby. Though if it lead to George deciding that the universe is punishing him for his wicked lies it might be worth it.

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/05/2024 11:04

Is there any significance in Fallon's choice of contraception?
Would the discussions on TA/the main thread be different if she was using a hormonal or barrier method?

I'm annoyed with the SL because of the doctor's breach of patient confidentiality and that the cause of miscarriage has not been attributed to the coil.

Is it another of my red herrings?

What would have happened I expect is that Fallon would not have been told she was pregnant and would not have known she'd had a miscarriage (assuming that she was in very early pregnancy).

This however would not add to the drama.

This. I expect it happens all the time and nobody knows about it.

Bruisername · 16/05/2024 13:15

Would there be complications because of the coil?

WhoppingBigBackside · 16/05/2024 14:35

Quite likely. Wasn't Fallon tired a lot a few weeks ago?

If "Around 60% of embryos disintegrate before people may even be aware that they are pregnant." then probably half the women who start to be pregnant don't know about it and don't have to be forced into a grieving process about it by their baby-mad spouses.

When I was in my teens there was no way to know for sure whether having a heavy period had in fact been having a miscarriage, because there was no way to tell for sure whether a woman was pregnant until after she'd missed a second period. I remember home pregnancy tests first going on the market, and how it changed a lot of people's perceptions.

New insights into mechanisms behind miscarriage - BMC Medicine

Sporadic miscarriage is the most common complication of early pregnancy. Two or three consecutive pregnancy losses is a less common phenomenon, and this is considered a distinct disease entity. Sporadic miscarriages are considered to primarily represen...

I remember home pregnancy tests first going on the market, and how it changed a lot of people's perceptions.

Indeed. I've had early positive pregnancy tests for pregnancies that have ended at the same time as my period would have arrived. If I hadn't been actively trying and testing for various reasons, I'd have had no idea that I'd been pregnant or that the end result was anything other than a period. In my case it triggers no emotions because I only knew I was pregnant for a few days before it ended and I've had babies both before and since. However, I do appreciate how lucky I've been and I know people who find themselves in different circumstances might feel completely differently about the same scenario...

I can certainly see why Harrison reacted the way he did. He was given sight of his dream only to have it snatched away within 24 hours... (I don't dare think about what might have happened if the pregnancy was viable and Fallon wanted to consider her options... I guess we might still have an interesting storyline to come in that respect, seeing as there's such clarity about how devastated Harrison feels vs Fallon).

Do we know how far along Fallon was supposed to be? I'm assuming she was expected to be 6 weeks plus, as the doctor was very certain about there being no heartbeat vs saying it was too early to tell and asking them to return for another scan...

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/05/2024 16:30

I was pregnant in 1979. I had to wait until I'd missed a second period, as you say, then go to the doctor wait for the result of the pregnancy test (at least a week) then, when the result was positive, told to either go away and come back at 12 weeks for 'booking in' or start making arrangements for a termination then. I had the baby.
