True - but I just don’t want him to end up working odd jobs in the village. He can be a humble accountant - doesn’t have to be a maths professor at Yale

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/10/2024 20:30

Yes, but it would be so much more fun if he were: just think of all the ways the editorial team could get that wrong.

Why do you imagine Brad has a golden future? Phoebe read PPE at Oxford and is now a humble algae-herder…

Let me have my dreams, RS. Also, I believe Phoebe is a director of the algae-herding enterprise.

Brad could be an actuary. I believe you need excellent maths for that and it's potentially very well paid. If only we knew an actuary who listens to TA and compiles statistics on these threads and could comment ...Grin

I am an ex-accountant. The ones I worked with were mostly not humble. You don't in my experience need excellent advanced maths to get through the chartered accountancy exams (or I would never have passed). Of course, that was a long time ago and things may have changed. I got by with O level Maths (grade B), reasonably good mental arithmetic and for exam purposes a lot of blood, sweat and tears trying to get to grips with basic statistics and some other mathematical techniques I've obliterated from my memory. To be fair, most of my colleagues had a better base knowledge than I had and greater natural aptitude.

I’m an accountant!

whilst you say you don’t need excellent maths you do need good maths skills (recognising there is a huge spread of what an accountant actually is)

he would be better suited to being an actuary imo but I would be happy for him to take on any professional role tbh. And perhaps there’s a role for a specialist farming accountant/tax advisor in ambridge

Gonners · 14/10/2024 10:28

Brad would probably make a very decent analyst at a US investment bank. In my experience, no social skills are required!

Bruisername · 14/10/2024 10:31

I don’t think he’d cope at a us investment bank and would be wise to aim for a European!!

ultimately he needs a job he can do whilst living in ambridge though

Gonners · 14/10/2024 10:43

You make Ambridge sound like the Hotel California.

Bruisername · 14/10/2024 10:45

It kind of is isn’t it!!

I get the impression the sw want to keep Brad around and I’d rather they didn’t do that by making him have to drop out of uni or something

Withdrawn at poster's request.

TottersBlankly · 14/10/2024 17:43

I’m rather hoping Brad’s new experience is being bested by a girl in a Mathematics seminar …

Not sure if they’d consider that Friday cliffhanger worthy?

RegimentalSturgeon · 16/10/2024 11:19

Brad could be an actuary.

Do you realise what you’ve done, @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g ? I now have a sort of earworm of Tracy saying, with considerable vim and emphasis, ‘He’s an actuary, actually’. I think there is something wrong with my brain.

MsCheeryble · 16/10/2024 11:27

I rather like the description of actuaries as people who find accountancy too stimulating*. It sort of fits Brad. Maybe some hotshot actuary firm will set up in Borchester and let Brad WFH?

  • Apologies to any actuaries around these parts
TherapistInATabard · 16/10/2024 14:05

I see George is in the cast list next week. Bit nervous about hearing him in prison again

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/10/2024 16:20

He'll probably just have another phone call.

Very nice interview here with Angus Stobie (George). The Archers' Angus Stobie on George's fate: 'Prison might make him worse' | Radio Times No spoilers in it, I'm putting it here rather than on the main thread mainly because of the photos.

OP posts:
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/10/2024 20:48

Stobie is terrific; pity the anonymous interviewer seems rather vague on details of the programme! As for instance George didn't "offer" to drive Alice home; he manhandled her into the passenger seat without her consent. And it wasn't "a taxi-full of villagers" the car he was driving hit. And I don't think "losing custody of three-year-old Martha" was what happened to Alice....

Gonners · 18/10/2024 20:55

Angus Stobie is quite remarkably handsome these days, and looks very different from the old, "differently remarkably handsome" photo of George on the BBC Archers website.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/10/2024 21:22

Angus Stobie has been quite a looker all along, but did a very good thug imitation for the Archers photographs! Looking him up on the internet produces pictures going back earlier than his casting as George.

RegimentalSturgeon · 19/10/2024 00:33

Disaster strikes for one resident,

Well, that’s splendid news whoever it is (always excepting Brian). Nothing trivial, I hope.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/10/2024 06:35

Interested to see from the article that AS was actually auditioning for Brad.

OP posts:
IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 19/10/2024 09:21

while Ian finds himself in over his head

Assuming not literally in the Am, it's more PTA twaddle.

Bruisername · 19/10/2024 09:22

i’m sure the ‘disaster’ will be someone burning their toast and having to go to work on an empty tummy

Gonners · 19/10/2024 10:26

Maybe Adumb is going to volunteer Ian to do all the cooking for the Terum.
