Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to have your fortune told by Bartleby, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thread thrown together in great haste in advance of tonight's episode. Who's in the Am? Is it George's fault? Is this the end for Alice? Over to you!

But then why were the keys in the glove box? Had she possibly taken an overdose too? Had she driven to somewhere and parked up with the intention of taking her life?

I do think this is deliberately unclear at present. She could also have just wanted to go somewhere for some peace and quiet to drink, and as a drunk person put the keys somewhere that made perfect sense to a drunk. Or were they spare keys and her set were in a pocket or handbag, who knows, but it does seem that the obvious plot device is that she did not intend to drive drunk.

Atichen · 06/05/2024 23:04

Just a thought that could scuper george... but if alice in the passenger seat had thrown up all over herself and the passenger side door plus the diganola seat belt marks from a crash show she's was a passenger not driver? (Or has alice a dash cam?) All come together after George's lies

Grimchmas · 06/05/2024 23:05

It does make me laugh that Denise's pronnounciation of Mr Ali STARE gets more and more extreme. I like to think the SWs are reading our threads and responding to them accordingly - they listened to us saying it had all got dull and boring, and gave us a car crash. They listen to us moan about AlaStare as a pronnounciation and... made it more extreme to troll us

Atichen · 06/05/2024 23:07

Also wasn't old drunk alice passed out in her car when Harrison drove her home/she made a pass at him? ... guessing he should have arrested her then

I think Alice will remember and protest her innocence, only to be not believed by anybody.

Judging by recent form the SWers will leave Will George Get Found Out unresolved for a while then forget all about it.

JanglyBeads · 06/05/2024 23:12

Yes I think she'd put the keys there in a responsible moment before opening the bottle. It may even be an acknowledged alky's precaution?

TheUsualChaos · 06/05/2024 23:20

That was what I felt the point on the key search was @JanglyBeads. To show she hadn't intended to drive in that state. I think she put the keys away and downed the bottle quickly where she thought no one would see her.

TheUsualChaos · 06/05/2024 23:25

Good shout up thread about voice notes. George will have swiftly deleted it and I suspect Will won't have even seen it.

I agree, so many pints raised here are then covered later, and without further point to the plot. I don’t want them to stop though!

Shouldbehoovering · 06/05/2024 23:35

Christ, points. My phone isn’t as clever as George’s, although it clearly thinks it is (I can’t edit on it either….)

WhoppingBigBackside · 06/05/2024 23:37

It wasn't a pint, @Shouldbehoovering , it was a bottle. Wink
Cross-posted.
I doubt George had only a pint either. Completely misses the point

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/05/2024 21:59

@BoreOfWhabylon what does the 🔮 have to say about all this?

I can't get much sense out of it, tbh.

It's going on about secondary drowning, spinal cord injury, Weil's disease, Alice in a prison cell and the Wrath of Harrison. It says George will take a leaf out of Helen's book and get away with it. For now.

The 🔮 also says it can sense the presence of a famous statistician...

EBearhug · 06/05/2024 23:49

I assumed Alice had intended to go home to drink, but was so desperate, she pulled into a lay by or similar before she got home, and putting the keys in the glove box was to stop her driving once drunk.

EBearhug · 06/05/2024 23:52

A bottle is 70cl.
A pint is about 47cl.
Alice drank a lot of vodka.

Darker · 07/05/2024 00:02

Didn’t she buy a big one? A thought that meant a litre…

EBearhug · 07/05/2024 00:13

I assumed a 70cl bottle rather than a half bottle.

I don't imagine the village shop is as well-stocked as the booze aisle of Tesco.

Lalgarh · 07/05/2024 00:51

Is George now possessed by the demonic spirit of Rob Titchener

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/05/2024 06:31

I think the 🔮 might be on the money there, more or less 😉

I get that this isn't a popular opinion but we always used to keep things quite separate between the spoilers and the no spoilers threads... please can we keep things like the cast list for future episodes to the spoilers thread?

+1

I don’t look at the cast list precisely because I consider it a Spoiler

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/05/2024 06:39

@Atichen makes a good point - George left Alice on her own for quite some time and only went back to her after everyone was out of the river and the sirens could be heard approaching. Alice was clearly about to be sick at the time of the accident and it would be quite clear, erm logistically, where she’d been sitting at the time. George hauling her about to get her back into the driver’s seat made it clear she hadn’t got out of the car to be sick outside.

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 07/05/2024 06:51

Please know I signed up for a trial sub for this. (Though there’s no way the Torygraph is getting a penny of my money.) No spoilers - we already know she hasn’t died. And that she’s in for a rough time.

Small point in George's favour is that his first thought was to contact the emergency services and help the occupants of the other vehicle. Moving Alice to cover his tracks came later.

This is not a sentence I thought I'd ever type, but I am happy to confirm that I am not Tim Harford. His colleague at the FT, Chris Giles, was in my year at my college, but I'm not him either.

I believe I was inadvertently the source of this rumour, by calling you the Tim Harford of these threads. Just to confirm that I in no way meant to imply that you were the actual Tim Harford. ... Although, perhaps in a spare moment you could use your stats skills to calculate the probability of you being Tim Harford, given the personal information you've shared on the threads! 😂

I went to university with Annelise Dodds and Sonia Sodha. I'm not either of them.
