Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to have your fortune told by Bartleby, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thread thrown together in great haste in advance of tonight's episode. Who's in the Am? Is it George's fault? Is this the end for Alice? Over to you!

Joy has a murky past - turned a new page and is relentlessly positive to bury her past.

i guess we are going to find out!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/05/2024 21:59

@BoreOfWhabylon what does the 🔮 have to say about all this?

WhoppingBigBackside · 06/05/2024 22:02

How could one misspell Tim Harford? (rhetorical question) It's more or less just as you say it.

George moved the passed out drunk Alice from the passenger seat to the driver's seat swiftly despite the fact that he was soaked through.

That is an excellent point. Surely even the dimmest of the Borsetshire constabulary could miss that clue.

I've listened since the 90s but haven't bothered in months before this thread bought me back in. Hopefully this will make things interesting again.

Joy is far too much of a motor-mouthed Pollyanna for my liking so I can't say I'd miss her. I should feel awful for saying that but after some of what I've read in this thread {{ shocked }} - I don't.

I bet she won't die though: Coma is a better storyline. But the last time I confidently made an Archers prediction here, I was diametrically wrong.

It seems to me that it is very much in George's character to shift the blame away from himself. Alice made herself the perfect patsy, honestly, and George will probably come to feel that she is partly to blame and deserved to be the fall guy.

I think RTA detectives only do extensive investigations when a death has occurred, but they might do for serious injury too.

It costs money to investigate an RTC exhaustively, if it looks obvious, cops won’t bother.

There is a natural urge to write Hartford. I don't know why, but even I feel it (and I'm the poster who spelled it correctly upthread). Possibly it's just a more common name, possibly it's a more common letter combination in general. And you wouldn't hear the t in a lot of accents.

crumpet · 06/05/2024 22:18

Eastie77Returns · 06/05/2024 19:17

Wow.

Ok controversial but I’m hoping Alice gets all the blame.

George has just saved a life (or two).

None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for her.

I’m not sure I agree. If Alice had put the keys in the glove box she wasn’t intending to drive. It was George (with no insurance?) who decided to drive her home so he was responsible for the car being on the road

DadDadDad · 06/05/2024 22:18

@WhoppingBigBackside - sure, if you say Harford you're likely to spell it correctly, it's more - as Fink points out - that's it easy to misremember the name as Hartford.

Exactly.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2024 20:37

Sounds about right. I'm very worried that this is going to have a terrible effect on Brian, my favourite character by a country mile.

Definitely this....

BeaRF75 · 06/05/2024 22:29

And, for the person who asked earlier, Ruairi is in the cast list for either this week or next (forget which).

WitcheryDivine · 06/05/2024 22:30

i really just spent a few mins wondering if @DadDadDad was TH then, I think TH has three kids so it might add up (so to speak) but I doubt Tim H would want to do mumsnet thread stats after a long day of other stats sadly ☹️

Grimchmas · 06/05/2024 22:36

I get that this isn't a popular opinion but we always used to keep things quite separate between the spoilers and the no spoilers threads... please can we keep things like the cast list for future episodes to the spoilers thread?

Dobest · 06/05/2024 22:38

How long do the headlights stay on when a car is totally submerged in water?

Could be hours, unless the engine management computer shit switches them off.

Dobest · 06/05/2024 22:42

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/05/2024 19:45

I don't think George can hope to get away with saying he got into the car with Alice and let her drive, given the state she was in. He pointed out to Alistair that she seemed to have drunk a bottle of vodka and Alistair confirmed that she bought it in the shop earlier that day. (Going to have to listen again. Details are hazy already!) Surely he's going to have to say he was walking home and came upon the accident?

What he can do is keep his trap shut.

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 06/05/2024 22:42

Wowsers, that was tense. I really thought we were hearing Fallon drown and she was going to die.

Can't stand Denise but slightly warmed to her when she went back in for George.

I know I'm in the minority but I think George is a great character and I'm looking forward to him having a major SL. His actions tonight were bang on character... his heroism saving Fallon alongside his total inability to tell the truth and willingness to do something dreadful to save his own neck.

Good shout from whomever thinks his fancy phone will be his undoing. I think the location services will show he travelled too fast to be on foot.

This. And it's up there on the thread's sticky "rules" every time.

TherapistInATabard · 06/05/2024 22:50

Yes @WhoppingBigBackside (good to see you back here!), I thought that about George’s wet clothes. How will he explain Alice also being wet?

OutOfTheHouse · 06/05/2024 22:51

Why was Alice where she was?
Why was she in her car parked up and blotto?

Because another car hit hers or she hit another car, and the engine stalled, would be the most reasonable explanation.

But then why were the keys in the glove box? Had she possibly taken an overdose too? Had she driven to somewhere and parked up with the intention of taking her life?

UniversalAunt · 06/05/2024 22:57

ArtG · 06/05/2024 20:07

Alfie Moore reckons an RTC is the best way to murder someone as the investigations are usually relatively perfunctory, so it’s a battle of the Beebs!

As in Tunnel.Paris.Fayed???

Grimchmas · 06/05/2024 22:58

For two medically trained people I thought A and D were a little rusty in their emergency first aid responses, though I know they had been drinking.

I need to listen to the episode again a few times I think.

So Alice's car stayed on land and only the other went in the water? Because nobody seemed to be looking at Alice's car for ages until George ran off back to it. But it must have been concealed somewhere for A&D not to have realised there was another vehicle with potential casualties around, no?

WhoppingBigBackside · 06/05/2024 23:01

I'm familiar with TH from his articles in the press. Hartford wouldn't have crossed my mind. I'm more familiar with Hertford. Hertford doesn't seem to me to be a surname.

TH went to the same school as the Ruairi actor, but probably not at the same time.

@TherapistInATabard , thanks. I've been lurking for a long time but accidentally posted on here thinking I was on the spoilers thread.
