Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to have your fortune told by Bartleby, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thread thrown together in great haste in advance of tonight's episode. Who's in the Am? Is it George's fault? Is this the end for Alice? Over to you!

Good theory @PassTheLemonDrizzle . Someone definitely needs to speak up.

PassTheLemonDrizzle, I like your theory, though it is a little hard on Brad to be lumbered with dealing with one of George's scams yet again, and this one a seriously criminal one.

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 09/05/2024 19:02

You’ve made me go back and listen again, @PassTheLemonDrizzle. It’s a good theory - but I feel I would have recognised if George were talking to Brad; he’s always a bit superior with him, whereas he sounded as if he was speaking to a mate just before he discovered Alice. But I could be wrong!

I went back and read the synopsis and the very short para about him finding to crashing includes a whole sentence on him leaving the voicemail for Will so perhaps it is more key than I thought!

Yes, that's true. However Chelsea is now working at the tea room with Fallon so it might pop up in conversation. Fallon did seem a bit more sympathetic to Alice than the others.

Bruisername · 09/05/2024 19:09

I think Fallon will feel conflicted about alive because she will blame herself for Alice relapsing because she cooled the friendship and wasn’t there when she needed her

of course she would be wrong to do so but I think that and the baby loss and Harrison’s reaction is going to push her over the edge

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 09/05/2024 19:10

George left the fruit cider in Alice’s car!?!

Nooooooooooo!

Or was it found in her stomach contents?

Oops, sorry I meant to quote @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime and not @TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge.

Sorry!

You can tell I'm new at this posting malarkey!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/05/2024 19:20

It was mentioned twice, so it can't be insignificant. Joy and Alistair can confirm that Alice didn't buy any cider, and George did. Chris might be able to say that it would be totally out of character for Alice to drink fruit cider.

OutOfTheHouse · 09/05/2024 19:20

Oooh. So the fruit cider was there. Joy will remember selling it to George. That puts him there.

Bruisername · 09/05/2024 19:23

Chris is very understanding but Alice again was quite petulant although I know they were trying to make her be realistic!

TMI on Alastair and Denise during the jazzer conversation. And then the lie which will be easily caught out now - way too much detail.

Mick picked up on it quick though!!!

why on earth did he have the bottle of fruit cider with him? Seems odd that he had enough cider to still be drinking on his walk home. And easily excused - he checked on her before calling 999 and put the bottle in then.

the overegging of George's hero status is a bit wearisome

PassTheLemonDrizzle · 09/05/2024 19:25

I listened to the episode where George bought the fruit cider. He used cash to pay whereas Alice and Alistair both paid for their shopping by card/phone. Only Joy knows that he bought fruit cider!

Oh, and the person he was talking to on the phone knows too. He said something like 'it's rank' which I assumed was a reference to the fruit cider.

nameoftheday · 09/05/2024 19:41

Surely the first thing Alistair and Denise would have done once everyone was out of the Am would have been to concoct a cover story for their presence, rather than Alistair making it up as he went along, ably assisted by Mick?

Will Paul let it drop or not?

I have a feeling it was the party ratehr than the cider that he said was rank. Wasn't his comment in the past tense and just after he'd said something else about the party? Going to have to LA, I suppose....

If the bottles were in the car wouldn't that mean George didn't drink them? If he'd drunk it at the party he wouldn't have brought the empties with him.

(picking up a line of conversation form a couple of pages ago but also still today) I 100% wouldn't be surprised if George has a non-consensual sexual encounter (rape or otherwise) in his future - in fact I'd be surprised if he didn't. however he got to who he is today, he clearly has some very MRA/Andrew Tate-esque views about women and he absolutely strikes me as somebody who would force himself on somebody and claim that they wanted it really/not hear their no/not pay any heed to the concept of enthusiastic consent.

The more I think about the accident, the more I'm inclined to think of George's actions that night as more irresponsible than heroic. Young and drunk (we have agreed that he was likely over the limit, haven't we?) man thought he knew what was best for drunk and vulnerable woman, and thought that he should be at the centre of the saviour narrative, rather than calling a relative, a friend of Alice's, or a cab. Him rescuing people out of the river WAS brave and heroic, but they wouldn't have been in the river in the first place if he hadn't have had such an overinflated opinion of himself in the first place.

Edited

Couldn't agree more.

His character is absolutely the sort that would end up having sex with someone far too drunk to give proper consent. He wouldn't view it as rape and she either wouldn't remember enough or not feel confident enough to report so he would get away with and probably not even think he did anything wrong. I hope they don't go down that road with him but it would be completely in character if they did 🤷‍♀️

His upbringing is no excuse for the way he is. He hasn't had it particularly tough. And what about Brad? He has managed to turn out well despite a useless father and living in a very low income household and having to go without a lot more than George.

Word must be getting round about George and some of the unpleasant things he has done. Plus his arrogance no doubt shines through after a few drinks. The girls that know him steer clear. He is seemingly good looking, works out and popular on social media. He is clearly angry that the girls aren't falling at his feet as he would expect. Yet there is his cousin, a nerdy, shy and quiet type who got himself a girlfriend without even trying. It doesn't make sense to George and he is furious about it. And it's the women that are the problem, not him of course.

WhoppingBigBackside · 09/05/2024 20:22

Rochelle 'visited' when Joy was coming round, in a hallucination.
The 'rank' reference was to the party, I think.
He said 'Don't worry, I've only had a cider' but that might have been a large bottle.

We only have George's word that his phone is broken. Isn't the location tracking stored in the cloud?

WhoppingBigBackside · 09/05/2024 20:27

Where did the alcopops come from?

DadDadDad · 09/05/2024 20:31

I assumed Felpersham was Cheltenham.

ETA - which does have a synagogue.

Edited

That’s too far away. Felpersham is the county town, I believe, so I’ve always taken it as Worcester (although name similarity makes me want to say Felpersham = Evesham and Borchester = Worcester).

There is no synagogue in Worcester. It closed in 1972.
