Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to have your fortune told by Bartleby, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thread thrown together in great haste in advance of tonight's episode. Who's in the Am? Is it George's fault? Is this the end for Alice? Over to you!

I am not a driver. Wouldn't it take hours and hours for a large bottle of vodka to pass through her system?

Also, Alice shows considerable lack of judgement when she’s drunk so hiding the keys from herself surely wouldn’t work?

most of the cliffhangers have had me muttering FGS as I turn the radio off but this one has me intrigued

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 05/05/2024 21:01

Yeah - the Uber plan would be better!

Perhaps she found she had no signal so just gave up?

I think George had driven a little when he called William?

Poppins2016 · 05/05/2024 21:02

Thanks for the new thread!

I haven't listened for ten days or so (due to having a newborn baby, I've been somewhat distracted!); so the threads here have been interesting reading... might try to catch up tomorrow... I'm a little nervous!

Madcats · 05/05/2024 21:03

Do normal people have cars where the doors don't auto-lock once they start moving? Every car we've owned for the last 20 years+ has.

The Am will be wider and deeper than the Thames by the end of the decade, mark my words!

What was the strange clattering noise (like colliding shopping trolleys) at the end of the BBC spoiler clip?

Is anybody deaded, yet?

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 05/05/2024 21:03

@Bruisername I’m assuming she put the keys away before she was drunk.

(She must have pretty extensive knowledge of the law around drunkenness - what with AA and rehab and a buddy all primed to inform her.)

Bruisername · 05/05/2024 21:03

Congratulations!

listening to the archers is perfect when feeding!

But she still hid them so where they are will be in her brain

I guess there are a lot who will feel guilty - Brian, Alastair and Joy for a start

Chris was remarkably calm

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 05/05/2024 21:05

Congratulations @Poppins2016Flowers

Will the new listener have an Archer name?

Thank you!

Yes... I really need to crack on and listen! 😁

GU24Mum · 05/05/2024 21:07

Could the other car have been Denise on the way to the hotel to meet Alastair?

I hope so but she wanted to go for a swim etc and had already bought her booze on the way so she should already be there

unless she fled Alastair because he was just too keen

Hell, yes. A bottle of strong wine the night before might be pushing it if you’re driving in the morning. Alcohol takes roughly an hour a unit to clear the system (although I’d always work on it taking more than that). Google suggests that a litre bottle of vodka contains 26 units, so that’s more than a full day.

Thank you! Amusingly, she actually does have a name that features in the Archers (although we weren't inspired by it)! 🤣

Dobest · 05/05/2024 21:10

When a passenger is nauseous, the driver stops and pushes Alice's head out of the car door or window.

Unless of course it's Sunday on the Archers.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/05/2024 21:11

I wonder if the other car was Jakob. Brian rang Kate to tell her what had happened and Jacob comes to know about it too, either because he was there when Brain rang or because Kate tells him - presumably at some point they must have started to worry where Alice was? Brian had a go at her in the early evening (I think) and if George is on his way home then it must be late at night/the early hours.

Jacob had gone to search for Alice to try and make amends for having known she was drinking again?

Not early hours: G left the party early because it was no good.

DadDadDad · 05/05/2024 21:23

Hi, gang, not been round these parts for a while as my TA listening has been sporadic, but caught tonight's episode and seemed to have hit all the drama. It felt like even the continuity announcer before and after was cranking up the tension.

Anyway, I can see this has cause excitement: while the recent posting rate on these threads has been running at a typical 37 posts per day, we've had over 150 posts in the last 24 hours. Not quite the level achieved with Nic Grundy's death, or Helen's trial, or the non-wedding of Kirsty & Tom, but still fairly decent.

Bruisername · 05/05/2024 21:24

Nice to see you again! What is the high point then?

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 05/05/2024 21:28

TottersBlanklyOnTheEdge · 05/05/2024 20:49

They’ve done well (potentially, they could still mess it up) with Alice drunk in charge of a stationary vehicle. The lawyer Brian pays for will be able to argue that the fact she’d put the keys in the glove pocket shows she had no intention of actually driving the car.

I don't think that gets her off the hook for being drunk in charge of a vehicle.

Edit - it doesn't
Drunk sleeping

But late enough that George is expecting Will to have locked up and gone to bed.

So probably after 10pm

OutOfTheHouse · 05/05/2024 21:33

Well I’m checking in as I need to hear theories.
I’ve been listening to TA for nearly 50 years as it was required listening as a child. I have listened every night for the last 25 years by choice. I still don’t know who anyone is or what’s happening.

Fink · 05/05/2024 21:36

Thanks for the new thread.

From the gender of jobs (I can't tag ClickyHeels because she's not on the new thread yet), in French the older way was to keep the same word but change the gender, e.g. le or la professeur, but now the feminist preference is to have a separate feminine word, e.g. professeure.

Anyway, back to counting down the hours until tomorrow's episode. I really hope tomorrow isn't something completely unrelated and banal like Pip and Stella cooking an omelette!

Darker · 05/05/2024 21:41

I can’t imagine there is anyone I’d like to get rescued by less than George.
