Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be euphoric about getting a job in an abattoir, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4888492-the-archers-spoilers-thread-8-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for the thread title suggestions. @HumanWetWipe came up with Cider with Fat Rosie and @BeardieWeirdie thought up Meadow Rise to Candleford. I wish I could have put in the Line of Duty mashups from the end of the last thread. Another time.

Heading for a ferry shortly, so nothing more from me for now. Over to you!

What's Lark Rise to Ambridge?
I wondered why they kept mentioning it. I thought the SW had some kind of bet going.

Bruisername · 24/09/2023 21:46

It’s an adaptation by the archers cast on Sunday at 3.

Worst possible sl is that pip is pregnant after ons and we have to deal with Stella becoming the live in stepparent to a newborn and all the issues around jealousy as signposted by Toby

This was my thought after today's conversation about the ONS being unplanned.

Fink · 24/09/2023 22:12

They already had Rosie as an unplanned pregnancy with not quite a ONS but certainly not a stable relationship. Surely the two of them have wised up and wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

Fink · 24/09/2023 22:18

Since Stella wasn't shy about discussing menstruating women recently, maybe they could have some mention of the horrors of a relationship when both partners are on their period/PMS (not always, it clearly depends on how rough each person has it). That would be more realistic than the stilted chat about brunch and the constant lurching from one squabble to the next.

LillianGish · 24/09/2023 22:37

Thank you for the priceless John Finnemore link @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. Did I ever mention that he was best man at a wedding I once went to? The Pip/Stella/ Toby love triangle grows ever more excruciating with each new scene. I tend to agree that Pip will find out she’s pregnant - particularly after Toby’s speech about not being jealous. Can Fallon please hurry up and get herself over to the charging station - where Jim will no doubt be her first customer (choosing to charge his new car there even though he could probably easily do it at home) - it’s the only reason I can possibly think of for the poorly executed Bridge Farm tea room takeover.

Verymodestmouse · 24/09/2023 23:26

Came here to check others thought Toby’s voice was weird. we did the same with Pip one episode and there was outrage that she’d been replaced and the actress had
to announce on twitter that she just had a terrible cold.

Passepartoute · 24/09/2023 23:26

Today's episode had far too much Pip in to be bearable. They should put special warnings on beforehand for episodes like that.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/09/2023 07:33

Ah, you were the lucky one, @LillianGish! I knew I'd read somewhere on MN that someone had been at a wedding where the peerless John Finnemore was Best Man. I imagine his speech was considerably above the normal standard. I hope he is as lovely as he always seems.

I didn't notice anything unusual about Toby's voice. I find Pip marginally less objectionable with Toby than anyone else. Not sure why. Possibly because I really like Toby's voice, so it distracts me.

Bruisername · 25/09/2023 07:52

his change in voice could be put down to a heavy cold. Either that or he’s feeling a bit down about the stupid sl he’s having to be involved in

LillianGish · 25/09/2023 08:00

i can confirm that John Finnemore was absolutely lovely @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g and that his speech was a hoot. What I particularly remember is that both my kids were big Miranda fans at the time (in which he had a cameo role) and it was they who immediately spotted him. He was really sweet with them and happy to reenact various scenes.

TottersBlanklyIntoBimboCore · 25/09/2023 08:03

Could it be because he sounds as if he genuinely likes and cares about her? I wouldn’t go so far as ‘chemistry’ but his slightly flat, unhurried delivery does manage to give the impression that they share a certain closeness and intimacy. I don’t know - but you’re right, those conversations are different.

PuppyPerson · 25/09/2023 08:12

I like Toby's voice and I think he's a great character. Whilst cringe-worthy at times, his and Pip's conversation sounded very real to me.
Surely now Stella knows about the recent night with Toby she'll run for the hills?! I wish she would, and am pretty sure she won't!

I suspect this sketch from John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme is very much rooted in life, after a relatively unknown actor cast in Cabin Pressure turned into a global megastar. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p04qqfxs

I think we would know by now, if Pip was up-duffed following the dalliance with Toby? It was just over 4 weeks ago, so unless there's some reason for her not to notice a late period she would have POAS by now...

Bruisername · 25/09/2023 08:39

I don’t think dramas are ever very accurate on women finding out they’re pregnant!

It would be a ridiculous sl and I hope the sw haven’t gone there. Sometimes it seems like they’re auditioning for eastenders

Passepartoute · 25/09/2023 09:17

Another John Finnemore Archers sketch. Start at 16:08. Grin

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b088fg48

I like the way that focusses on the fact that in TA people are always coming up with bloody stupid schemes which they insist on going ahead with despite their obvious stupidity. Mind you, Natasha has proved Finnemore wrong about it being always the male characters who come up with these ideas.

TherapistInATabard · 25/09/2023 12:31

I thought Toby sounded funny too, but to me it sounded like a different recording to the Pip actress. You know how they do ADR for films/tv and it sometimes sounds like they’re in a tin can? The sound quality wasn’t the same for Toby and Pip. Not sure I’ve explained that well.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/09/2023 13:18

Seems clear to me.... They did sound as if they'd been recorded in different locations and spliced if you went by the quality of the voices, but surely that was too arduous for them to manage during lockdown and would still be too arduous now.

I'm being irritated at the moment by the BBC sound engineers just having discovered reverb for use in their trailers on the World Service, and using it for the final sentence of each one. The rest of us have known about that effect since perhaps the 1960s, but I suppose it's better late than never for them. And I expect they will eventually get over the novelty.

EmmaPaella · 25/09/2023 14:16

Dear lord. Pip and Toby went on a bit during that episode.

CompaniesHouse · 25/09/2023 15:02

One thing about the Pip actor is that I think she does a good job of sounding like David’s daughter. There’s a few vocal
mannerisms she has which are similar to David’s. I really noticed during the Pip and Toby scenes in the last episode.

“rocked your boat” isn’t a real phrase is it? Rocked your world, floated your boat.

I like Jazzer and Neil together (in scenes, not as a potential relationship!)

HumanWetWipe · 25/09/2023 15:08

The saying is 'rock the boat' and it doesn't mean the same as 'float your boat'

harriethoyle · 25/09/2023 15:13

Yeah "don't rock the boat" means don't make a fuss about something. "You float my boat" means I find you wildly desirable!!

Two very different phrases 😆
