Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be euphoric about getting a job in an abattoir, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4888492-the-archers-spoilers-thread-8-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for the thread title suggestions. @HumanWetWipe came up with Cider with Fat Rosie and @BeardieWeirdie thought up Meadow Rise to Candleford. I wish I could have put in the Line of Duty mashups from the end of the last thread. Another time.

Heading for a ferry shortly, so nothing more from me for now. Over to you!

No. Definitely Sid. Such horrors are not lightly forgotten.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/09/2023 16:10

No, totally out of character, it was Sid. It was hideous! Us old-timers are all scarred.

Tom and Natasha had a speedily organised wedding party at the village hall IIRC. Natasha arrived with designer clothes and an expensive makeup habit. Remember the makeovers? She hasn’t done one for a while though. She was quite defensive about her credit card debt, along the lines of “I’m entitled to the good things in life now, why should I wait till I can afford them?”

EBearhug · 24/09/2023 17:23

The policeman was Dave Barry, I think.

I thought, all explained, and thank god, no mention of the shower scene. Clearly I am not the only one still traumatised, though...

HumanWetWipe · 24/09/2023 17:34

Wasn't the policeman Dave Barry?

I'm beginning to think that Pip is a good actor. I'm basing this on that the character is meant to be completely annoying. She is that.

Natasha is completely believable IMO.

I seem to remember that HN (AKA Kathy) was not a favourite of SO'C.

faffadoodledo · 24/09/2023 17:41

The Sid and Jolene shower scene happened in 2000 while I was living overseas. Early days of the internet so I couldn't listen. Which in hindsight was a good thing! For 2.5 years I relied on daily synopses on the BBC website which I would read avidly.

Whatonearthdidicomeinherefor · 24/09/2023 17:43

Sorry what's SO'C?

HumanWetWipe · 24/09/2023 17:44

Oops, I cross-posted there. Hadn't updated while reading from where I left it earlier.

HumanWetWipe · 24/09/2023 17:47

He was the editor after Voldemort's Wife.
Rob T was intended to be 'the next Brian Aldridge' but SO'C decided to introduce a more sinister SL involving DV and marital rape.

TottersBlanklyIntoBimboCore · 24/09/2023 18:04

Leonard doing sterling work on Radio 3 at the moment. He does have such an engaging voice - shame his Archers character is somewhat emasculated and ridiculous.

Sheeponacid · 24/09/2023 16:03

Urgh. Wasn't that Kenton and Jolene though?

It was Sid and Jolene.
Lowfield, Thursday 27th January, 2000:
"Sid and Jolene's infamous (if you've read the British media in the last week) shower, not so interestingly Hitchcock-ian nor unrestrained steamy passion as confirming the programme as a soap opera. The most exciting thing was Sid demanding coal tar soap, nothing flowery scented that Kathy might get suspicious at."

Fallon was born in June 1985; Jolene moved herself and her daughter into The Bull with Sid in 2000 while Fallon was still at school. That was a massive problem: Fallon hated Sid, and made no secret of the fact. She even tried to get Wayne and his girlfriend to let her live there instead.

stilldumdedumming · 24/09/2023 18:17

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g thank you for the link! Superb outro too!

TottersBlanklyIntoBimboCore · 24/09/2023 18:27

Yes, it was hard for Fallon. I think I remember her telling her mother she could ‘hear them’ through the bedroom walls …

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 24/09/2023 19:28

Why are Pip and Stella so serious so soon? Makes no sense. It's like a cliche lesbian relationship. I fully expect Stella to have moved in by autumn. She'd be much better off with a new dog.

Wow, I was sure I could remember a Kenton and Jolene shower scene from much more recently than that (like 15 years ago). I've obviously just heard about the horrors of the shower scene and my brain has filled in the gaps.

Bruisername · 24/09/2023 19:58

Oh god - that opening scene was so painful and unnatural. They are such a rubbish couple.

Toby sounded really different. He let her off easy and she had a nerve saying he brings everything back to him when she must be the most self centred person around!!

more bloody lark rise. Do they not realise how shoe horned it all sounds?

HumanWetWipe · 24/09/2023 20:06

HN - Hedli Niklaus
VW - Vanessa Whitburn (she dedded Nigel)
SO'C- Sean O'Connor.

TickTickTock · 24/09/2023 20:20

I predict a continuing and seemingly perfect relationship for Pip and Stella, until she finds out she's pregnant and has to fess up about her one night stand with Toby....

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/09/2023 20:20

I have worked out why VW refused to allow a lesbian couple in the programme. It was because she knew that they were incapable of not making them sound stilted and awful, and as a lesbian herself she didn't want to be responsible for lesbians sounding so dire.

Stella already knows about that one night stand. Having overheard about it is why she rushed away into the night this evening.

Oops! Clearly I actually need to listen rather than just catching up on this thread, lol 🤣

Bruisername · 24/09/2023 20:26

Worst possible sl is that pip is pregnant after ons and we have to deal with Stella becoming the live in stepparent to a newborn and all the issues around jealousy as signposted by Toby

He sounded so different in the first scene that I actually thought it was a different actor. What was going on with his voice?!

Bruisername · 24/09/2023 21:03

Just heard the trailer for lark rise to ambridge. I will not be tuning in.

Thanks so much for the new thread @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g.
Best wishes for you on your travels. Hope all goes as well as these things can Flowers

I would love Ted Hastings to take over policing Ambridge when Harrison decides to become the local equivalent of St Francis of Assissi.

I think George joining the cops would be very much in character and an interesting storyline
