Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be euphoric about getting a job in an abattoir, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4888492-the-archers-spoilers-thread-8-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for the thread title suggestions. @HumanWetWipe came up with Cider with Fat Rosie and @BeardieWeirdie thought up Meadow Rise to Candleford. I wish I could have put in the Line of Duty mashups from the end of the last thread. Another time.

Heading for a ferry shortly, so nothing more from me for now. Over to you!

The Archers spoilers thread #8: Can't wait for 7.02pm? Join us here! | Mumsnet

From these comments I would guess this is a Naylah Ahmed week; she very often uses strange versions of idiomatic phrases. Not saying she is wrong or nobody would ever say that; I will say that I haven't ever heard them used in the particular way she has them, by anyone in real life.

harriethoyle · 25/09/2023 15:58

I love it when people get those things wrong. For example, a recent post on here (MN not this thread) where someone was talking about being a skate goat 😂Obviously immediately thought of a goat on a skateboard, cruising down the sidewalk in California!

Buttercupsdaisiesdandelions · 25/09/2023 16:03

Of course, if it was Rex rather than Toby, someone could literally rock his boat ;)

I think misheard (or maybe misunderstood) words repeated in conversation used to be called malapropisms. Skate goat would be a perfect example.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 25/09/2023 16:30

I thought Toby sounds the same but the most recent episode with George in it - the one where he convinced Emma to go for the tea room manager job - I thought that sounded like a different actor?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/09/2023 17:15

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

I’ve noticed loads of weird expressions recently. Mainly from Pip and Ruth.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/09/2023 17:48

The fourth degree springs to mind.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/09/2023 17:49

They do seem to happen more when Naylah Ahmed is the writer for the week.

Bruisername · 25/09/2023 17:51

Yes - you would think the actors might say something?

Bruisername · 25/09/2023 17:51

Unless there’s an archers special on malapropisms next Sunday at 3

WhatapityWapiti · 25/09/2023 17:52

Tbf Toby is the kind of dafty who might well get the expression wrong!

Bruisername · 25/09/2023 19:15

When pip was speaking with will her delivery was pretty normal. If she could just maintain that…Talk of it being a big deal taking on a child - more signposting to ons pregnancy?

so Josh isn’t going to tell Jim and he will find out by someone accidentally mentioning it. Then the band will pull out and Jim will pull out his piano and be the hero of the hour

and talking of delivery, has clarrie always sounded like a caricature of herself?

Bruisername · 25/09/2023 19:16

And the conviction will is going to be alright - what doom awaits him?

RegimentalSturgeon · 25/09/2023 19:27

what doom awaits him?

Massive and destructive guilt for losing it with George next time the festering little scrote does something frightful?

The original Clarrie left the show (and went to New Zealand?). She had a much warmer voice. This actress always sounds so querulous and permanently put out.

Ambridge · 25/09/2023 19:56

Clarrie seems to be sounding more and more like Pam Ayres doing ‘some of me poems' recently.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/09/2023 20:01

There have been three Clarries, one of them twice.

Heather Bell 1979 - 1986; Fiona Mathieson 1986 - 1987; Rosalind Adams 1988 - 2012; Heather Bell 10th February 2013 -

So the current Clarrie is also the original Clarrie.

I think Fiona Mathieson may have killed herself. Rosalind Adams said she was retiring to spend more time with her grandchildren.

And I think the person who went to New Zealand was Pamela Craig, who played Betty Tucker.

FizzingAda · 25/09/2023 22:00

Yes, you're right, it was Betty Tucker who went to NZ, I'm getting confused! I think maybe the Clarrie I'm thinking of with the nice voice was the last one, Rosalind Adams.

EBearhug · 26/09/2023 00:31

A passing thought, with Will moving house - do we know who lives in Casa Nueva these days, or whatever it was called? Does the estate have a gamekeeper these days?

BeatriceBatchelor · 26/09/2023 01:32

Pip and Stella's relationship (such as it is) is utterly joyless. No spark, no fun, no passion. They've skipped the honeymoon phase and gone straight to mithering about inlaws, step parenting, ex partners. I don't see what either of them are getting out of it.

Alwaysdieting · 26/09/2023 05:01

Josh needs a good kick up the arse. He always has a superior air and really he is just a little pip squeek.love Paul he is so kind and thoughtful.
Talking of Pip, has Stella just realised that fat Rosie is Pips daughter? How come thats a problem all of a sudden. With all Pip and Stellas trails and tribulations im surprised there are in a relationship in the first place.
I can understand Clarrie and Eddie worrying about Will, it was a terrible shock to find your son on the verge of taking his own life, but he seems ok now.
And how much Borchester Blue are they making for GG, Carrie said the dairy was really busy because of the GG order.

ArtG · 26/09/2023 06:16

I always suspected that the “piano teacher” would prove to be more interesting than implied. Now we know her name is “Kiki” I’m wondering if we’ll be getting an ‘as herself’ appearance from 70s (in both senses) pop chanteuse Kiki Dee.

Bruisername · 26/09/2023 07:05

Or a drag queen?

Atichen · 26/09/2023 08:35

My guess is Josh wont get round to cancle jim, and panic about it on the day/night but then Kiki will turn out to be one of the straw crows old music teacher (maybe violen girl) and they'll duet together and it will all be lovely and OK in the end

S/he has been named as Kiki for years, since Jim first started lessons with her, and I'm fairly sure she is a she.

I wouldn't get your hopes up about hearing her on air anytime soon. That would imply that Josh's tedious cock up gets more airtime (sadly probable). If only the SWs would keep us updated about the characters who are already voiced!

How can Josh try to pin this on David?! He was asked to sort the entertainment. I don't blame him for saying no: the family have made it clear there's no job for him at Brookfield and that he has to earn his own money, but still expect him to run around supporting the family business. Nevertheless, he did not agree to David's request, so David looked elsewhere. Meanwhile, Paul worked on Josh and Josh approached the Straw Crows (although notice that he got Paul to do the detailed negotiations and hard work) without telling David. And then he's surprised that David took his reluctance to help seriously. David should have told Josh he had it under control and not to bother, but Josh is much more to blame.
