Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be euphoric about getting a job in an abattoir, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4888492-the-archers-spoilers-thread-8-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for the thread title suggestions. @HumanWetWipe came up with Cider with Fat Rosie and @BeardieWeirdie thought up Meadow Rise to Candleford. I wish I could have put in the Line of Duty mashups from the end of the last thread. Another time.

Heading for a ferry shortly, so nothing more from me for now. Over to you!

Agreed on all points. Worth bearing in mind that some of the stuff that's come out since Nigel died is a back invention of the SWs to suit later storylines. I have a vague memory that Lily getting a Gwen John picture was a plot device to bring her into close contact with Russ, who as an art teacher was asked what he thought of it, or something like that. I don't think it was ever mentioned when Nigel was alive.

weddings at a tea room? What an odd idea she has for a high end tea room. I went to a “tea” wedding. Very nice, it was, cake stands and flowers, and a man on stilts and other entertainers for the kids. I can remember it, whereas the decorations/favours etc at other weddings have merged into a blur.

Bruisername · 22/09/2023 20:47

I would say of the two of them it would have been lizzie enforcing ‘traditions’ rather than Nigel.

But was it in a tea room on a farm?

EmmasBirthdayEarrings · 22/09/2023 09:39

The custard cream references felt very laboured. I don’t consider Freddie sophisticated but even he wouldn’t rub his hands in glee at the thought of a custard cream. Chocolate digestives would have fitted better.

I agree the whole episode made him sound like a child- basically a 14-year-old on work experience.

He also commented on the hob nobs.

I presume that now Fallon has gone for Natasha’s job offer, Emma will wake up to the idea of starting her own cafe at the charging station

But was it in a tea room on a farm?

That’s asking a bit much of my memory!

Bruisername · 22/09/2023 20:54

I’ve been to an afternoon tea themed wedding but it was in a very grand old building.

also, booths are very hard to get right in high end

HumanWetWipe · 22/09/2023 21:01

I don't think they'd have booths. Private Events (daylesford.com)
I'm not sure where the tea room is in relation to the farmyard but an orchard has been mentioned before. I can see an orchard wedding being quite appealing.

Bruisername · 22/09/2023 21:02

tash wanted to measure up for booths

HumanWetWipe · 22/09/2023 21:04

Oh sorry. Wallpaper and booths. Hmm!

Bruisername · 22/09/2023 21:19

booths and wallpaper don’t fit the scandi aesthetic either.

I hope fallon doesn’t forget to charge them for the kitchen equipment

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/09/2023 21:28

Was it Fallon or Emma that Lynda offered to invest in? Whichever it was will get the charging station.

Bruisername · 22/09/2023 21:40

It was fallon.

yes I think that’s right and then Emma won’t get the managers job because the sw don’t want her to do well for herself

RegimentalSturgeon · 22/09/2023 21:56

HumanWetWipe · 22/09/2023 20:08

@AngryBirdsNoMore , Nigel was absolutely wonderful. He was a bit older than Lizzie, about Shula's age, and would have been the product of his upbringing. Carrying in the family line and all that. He certainly wasn't a massive sexist.

He was funny and sweet, thought the world of Lizzie and Frilly. He had bags of enthusiasm - a bit too much at times. His dedding was unforgiveable.

And wasn’t it lucky for Elizabeth that he was killed outright…

I remember being greatly amused by his (ludicrously protracted) fall scream being in use as a ringtone within a day or so.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 22/09/2023 22:45

Certainly didn’t mean to cause any offence against Nigel’s sainted memory! 😅

Bruisername · 22/09/2023 22:49

One must respect a man whose stately home is taller than the Eiffel Tower

Passepartoute · 22/09/2023 22:52

It sounded a bit like Fallon's bonus plan proposal was going down very badly and maybe the whole deal will founder on that.

It's still making me cross that, within two days of telling Fallon that they're not renewing the lease, Natasha is swanning around proclaiming they are the new owners. I know the law is only ever observed in soaps when it suits the plot line, but this is surely ridiculous.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 22/09/2023 23:28

Natasha’s endless ‘we’s really started to grate. It felt very ‘look at me, I’m an Archer.’

HumanWetWipe · 22/09/2023 23:50

He was lovely, @AngryBirdsNoMore . The way he used to say 'Oh Lizzie!'.
He was fun.

Ambridge · 23/09/2023 08:05

Listening to Fallon's polite but very non-committal 'mmmmms' as Natasha was spiralling into ever more grandiose fantasy about the NuTearooms, I really thought she was going to tell her to stuff it up her organic jumper.

Hopefully there’s still time for that moment to come, and I for one will relish it when it does.

EmmasBirthdayEarrings · 23/09/2023 08:16

I don’t usually feel sorry for Emma but I did last night.

JanglyBeads · 23/09/2023 08:23

Yes, her sobs. 😞

Bruisername · 23/09/2023 08:29

The problem with Emma is that she builds it up in her mind that she is going to do something (grey gables role, this manager job) and is then angry/devastated when she doesn’t get it.

fallon clearly doesn’t see her as at all ambitious or wanting more and I think I would have been more upset about that and the fact i’d lost my ability to negotiate my own contract

stilldumdedumming · 23/09/2023 10:29

The contract isn't signed. Tasha will find the email and think Emma much more malleable. Offer it to her no bonuses. Then what. Gallon and Emma fall out?

PuppyPerson · 23/09/2023 12:47

Poor Emma, and Fallon too, so oblivious to Emma thinking she'd got the manager job, they've both been really messed around. I think this is a really interesting storyline, because I think all 3 of them are trying to do the right things for themselves, for all the right reasons, but completely seeing past how their decisions impact on each other.
