We listened to Prof Speigelhalter a couple of weeks ago and it was lovely - great music and a nice guy.
I also loved Ian Wright and Alan Carr (who normally irritates me)
Has anyone else got any recommendations?

Those were exactly my views. To think of her childhood and then of her achievements, just amazing.

LadyEloise1 · 29/03/2025 08:41

Thank you for the headsup @nauticant
It was an excellent episode.
I don’t live in the UK and hadn’t heard of Donna.
What an amazing woman Donna Ockenden is.

OldChairMan · 30/03/2025 10:10

Lindsey Hilsum on now. Fantastic already.

Today's (a repeat from last Sunday) is an utter classic:

Donna Ockenden is a former clinical midwife who led the Ockenden Review which revealed, at the time, the biggest maternity scandal in NHS history.

Considering her start in life, and, man, that was grim, her achievements in life are amazing.

Thank you for the recommendation. I will add it to my listening list for my commute next week.

They repeated the Ian Wright one this morning, what an emotional rollercoaster. The Mr Pigden story is so lovely.

Im not remotely interested in football but he seems like a genuine guy, who does a lot for grass roots sport.

nauticant · 13/06/2025 09:50

I nominate today's (a repeat of last Sunday's) as something special:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002d87s

Professor Lucy Easthope is an adviser on disaster recovery and planning. She’s an expert in planning for and reacting to major incidents: natural disaster, terrorist attacks, pandemics and fires, and is the visiting Professor of Mass Fatalities and Pandemics at the University of Bath.

Understated, fascinating, and highly compassionate in a way that makes a real world difference. It's always great to have a break from the celebs.

Grassgarden · 13/06/2025 09:56

Her book is brilliant. When the dust settles

BunnyRuddington · 13/06/2025 19:38

@TonTonMacouteI’m not interested in Football either but this is such a good listen isn’t it? I’d recommend looking up the episode where Fi & Jane talk to him on Fortunately.

@@nauticant and @Grassgardenthank you both for the recommendations. I shall look both of those up Smile

BitOutOfPractice · 13/06/2025 21:47

I always perk up when I see this thread in active! Thank you for the recommendation @nauticant

I agree about Ian Wright. I’m a massive football fan so I’m especially happy when football gets this positive airing. It’s a really special listen.

nauticant · 13/06/2025 22:00

I still think fondly of our time together in the trenches of The Archers threads @BitOutOfPractice. I trust TA still delivers the goods for you.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/06/2025 22:34

I’m still very invested at the moment @nauticant but TA is such a part of my dna now that I’m a hopeless case 😬

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/10/2025 10:21

Lennie James today has me in tears. What a story. Poor chap.

nauticant · 20/02/2026 10:01

Today's was Richard Young, a photographer who was once known as the “king of the paparazzi”. I assumed it wouldn't be that interesting for me but it was fascinating. He was talking about a London that I was just able to see before it went, he was from a very particular era, also gone, and about a whole world of celebrity that is also gone. It was like a time capsule of lost things.

Willmafrockfit · 20/02/2026 11:14

i am listening to Richard Young, interesting because it came after mention of that photo of Andrew MW

he talks so fast, i have to keep pausing

he has had a fascinating life though

Gary O'Donoghue today. Excellent. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002wjj9

I was meaning to come on here and recommend this too! Gary's great. Always love his reports. His parents sound wonderful, as is he.

FatRosie · 17/05/2026 20:14

I don't normally listen to DID but heard it today. I hadn't realised he was blind.
He came across exceptionally well.

Thanks for the recommendation. I loved this.

LadyEloise1 · 18/05/2026 13:17

And I won’t be able to listen to it cos the feckers in the BBC only recently have decided that only UK listeners have access to BBC Sounds 🥲
I would be willing to pay to have access to the BBC player and BBC sounds.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/05/2026 06:53

@LadyEloise1 very many bbc shows are on the podcast app (if you have a apple phone). Usually a bit behind but DID is definitely on there.

LadyEloise1 · 19/05/2026 17:27

Oh my @BitOutOfPractice !
I think I love you.
Thank you 💐💐💐
I’m now listening to Jessie Buckley on DID. ❤️

BitOutOfPractice · 19/05/2026 21:18

You’re very welcome @LadyEloise1 ! Most of the shows I enjoy like In Our Time and A Short History Of (and many others!) are on there too. Enjoy!

nauticant · 22/05/2026 10:00

I listen to my Desert Island Discs episodes on the repeat so am only listening to the one with Gary O'Donoghue today. In fact it finished a minute ago.

That was an excellent episode, one of the best I've heard in ages.

Isn't he an absolutely lovely man? So gentle and likeable.

nauticant · 09/06/2026 09:34

He came across really well. It's amazing what he's achieved.

As a bonus his music choices came across as authentic. (For some guests, particularly politicians, they sometimes don't.)
