Can anyone recommend me some hidden gems on R4/BBC Sounds?

I’ve really enjoyed listening to the radio recently and would love suggestions for more things to try. The BBC Sounds app sometimes suggests good things but I’m sure there must be lots of hidden gems I just haven’t found.

I’ve really enjoyed:
Just a Minute
I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Clue
Wordaholics
Old Harry’s Game
Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully

And also quite liked:
Paradise Lost in Cyberspace
That Mitchell and Webb Sound

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated! Thank you Smile

They’ve just started to rerun Cabin Pressure from the beginning.

Defenestratethecat · 21/06/2020 09:43

Came on to say Cabin Pressure, also John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme. The dramatisation of the Barchester Chronicles from a couple of years ago was superb, but there are many adaptations of classics that are really well done - there was a Zola adaptation with Glenda Jackson, 'Blood,Sex and Money' or similar that was very good, and a series of Walter Scott adaptations with David Tennant.

Ooh. Bleak Expectations is great if it’s on there.

Borington · 21/06/2020 09:46

I’ve really enjoyed Grounded with Louis Theroux - particularly Miriam Margolyes, was hilarious!

violetscone · 21/06/2020 09:46

Thanks for these! Bleak Expectations is indeed on there (a few episodes from series 5).

Dead Ringers has just started up again - that’s hilarious 😁

Borington · 21/06/2020 09:58

Also, the guilty feminist (also in podcasts) is very funny. And there are a LOT of them!

Fortunately
Something Rhymes with Purple
Older and Wider
Seriously
The Battles That Won Our Freedom
The Infinite Monkey Cage

If you go to Radio 4 Extra there are lots of programmes that were originally on Radio 4, from last week through to years ago. It's worth exploring via BBC Sounds. Drama, comedy, quiz etc and programmes such as Great Lives, TED Talks can often throw up some gems. Cabin Pressure is on there at the moment.

Just don't go near The Archers at present if you're not a regular listener.

I have been looking through but don’t always find the good things.

Thanks for the Archers tip!

Now wondering if I should give Cabin Pressure another go after multiple mentions - tried listening once and couldn’t get into it.

Another vote for Cabin Pressure...it’s hand down brilliant!

CrashingCymbals · 21/06/2020 10:59

I have similar tastes to you so watching with interest. I couldn't get on with Cabin Pressure but my DH does like it. Have you listened to Unbelievable Truth? I can also recommend Louis Theroux's Grounded. I've listened to 3 out of 4 episodes of Mark Watson Talks a Bit About Life. It's not amazing, but interesting enough to do the washing up to 😂

Another vote for Cabin Pressure. Tis a thing of beauty.
