Can anyone recommend me some hidden gems on R4/BBC Sounds?

I’ve really enjoyed listening to the radio recently and would love suggestions for more things to try. The BBC Sounds app sometimes suggests good things but I’m sure there must be lots of hidden gems I just haven’t found.

I’ve really enjoyed:
Just a Minute
I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Clue
Wordaholics
Old Harry’s Game
Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully

And also quite liked:
Paradise Lost in Cyberspace
That Mitchell and Webb Sound

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated! Thank you Smile

Thanks for the extra advice on Cabin Pressure. I've started it and it was brilliant.

I love radio 4!

Life At Absolute Zero
I've just discovered this and it's so witty and gentle. Series 3 all episodes and Series 4 just started on R4.
If you like Victoria Wood you will enjoy Lynne Truss's observational writing.

Fortunately with Fi and Jane so funny I was bent double on a walk during the early part of lockdown on my hours exercise - I must have looked like I'd totally lost it 🤣

Another vote for North by Northamptonshire. So we'll written. It's on Radio 4 Extra at the moment. Also love Fags, Mags and Bags.

And as an alternative to Desert Island Discs, Private Passions on Radio 3 does a similar thing but it is not as weighted down by the rigidity of 8 discs. So it's more relaxed and the presenter, Michael Berkeley is really nice to listen to. Mainly classical music but he gets really interesting people on and they just chat about music and what it means to them.

Don't think anyone's mentioned Clare in the Community? Love Sally Phillips.
And for serious - Start the Week.

This! Brilliant laugh out loud stuff. I love hearing two women just talking freely without the constraints of 'proper'/ BBC radio.

Amazing drama Home Front- it was broadcast as one fifteen minute episode each day exactly 100 years on from that day during WW1 so 1914 to 1918 broadcast in 2014 to 2018. Each episode from a different character’s point of view, with stories intertwining. Amazing portrayal of everyday life at that time, how the war affected people’s lives, set in Dover and Tynemouth.

LunaNorth · 19/07/2020 08:15

Shamelessly place marking Wink

diplodocusinermine · 19/07/2020 08:16

LittleRa, DH downloaded Home Front and we've just started re-listening - great for long car journeys. Also just started listening to the Raj Quartet.

LittleRa · 19/07/2020 08:19

@diplodocusinermine I loved it, I might listen to it all again. I got a free 6 month audible subscription with a purchase recently so that has overtaken my podcast/radio drama listening at the moment but I’ll come back to it. Currently listening to Hilary Mantel’s The Mirror and the Light and it’s 35 hours long!

Velvian · 19/07/2020 08:23

Dilemma with Sue Perkins,
My Teenage Diary
The Life Scientific
A Good Read
Fortunately
Grounded

If you like True Crime (hate it on TV, but radio is different for me) :
The Strange Death of Innes Ewart
The Doorstep Murder
Death in Ice Valley
The Missing Crypto Queen
Finding Kevin Parle
What Happenened to Annie

Drama:
Charles Paris (Bill Nighy)
Rumpole (Benedict Cumberbatch)
For the Love of Leo (Chris Bonner)
A Small Town Murder (Meera Syal)
Indigo (Romola Garai - a bit woo)

My friends don't take the piss out of me any more for my love of Radio 4. They knew not to call me on Monday afternoons while Tumanbay was on.

karmasic · 26/07/2020 22:56

I am a massive fan of R4 and know and like most of the programs mentioned on this thread, but, I just don't get the Cabin Pressure love.
I know it's really witty, and obvs Stephanie Cole, but I just don't find it funny at all. So hammy!

Hepzibar · 19/06/2021 07:34

All the series of Stone are on BBC Sounds.

It's a detective drama along with the private lives of the 3 main characters, all played brilliantly (Hugo Speer is Stone).

I have been binge listening on my car journey to and from work for the last few months. I'm bereft now I'm up to date.
I'm on Detective now - also great.

SorryPardonWhat · 21/06/2021 22:59

Gutted I can't find Cabin Pressure on BBC Sounds app. Tsk.

Goldensyrupissticky · 27/06/2021 17:43

Another vote for The Missing Cryptoqueen. Also enjoyed Fake Heiress.

The Battersea Poltergeist was rather creepy.

I really enjoyed The Lovecraft Investigations. These are three stories.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/06/2021 18:06

I know this is an old thread, but as it's been revived, I endorse many of the recommendations made already.

Yet another vote for Cabin Pressure, and anything else you can find by John Finnemore. Should clarify that the first eight series of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme are sketch-based comedy. Series 9, which ended recently, is a bit different. I think it's genius, but you need to invest a bit of time to get it - the consensus seems to be that it really takes off at episode 3 (of 6).

In and Out of the Kitchen

Happy listening!

@getdownonit

Mark Steel's in Town. Brilliant stand up taking the piss out of the town or place he's in. Really well researched which makes the local audience laugh.

The Forest of Dean one is particularly good. Or anywhere local to wherever you are as you will get it.

I was about to come on and recommend Mark Steel's in Town. You don't have to know the town (but obviously its interesting if you do) I listen while running sometimes and I often wonder what people think as they see me giggling while I run/plod.

I can highly recommend Ventnor as a good one to start with, but I've never come across a bad episode.

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2021 16:51

@FlamingoAndJohn

They’ve just started to rerun Cabin Pressure from the beginning.
I was about to recommend this !

You might be able to find it via a library subscription - some of them lend out audio and include it in what they offer.
