Can anyone recommend me some hidden gems on R4/BBC Sounds?

I’ve really enjoyed listening to the radio recently and would love suggestions for more things to try. The BBC Sounds app sometimes suggests good things but I’m sure there must be lots of hidden gems I just haven’t found.

I’ve really enjoyed:
Just a Minute
I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Clue
Wordaholics
Old Harry’s Game
Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully

And also quite liked:
Paradise Lost in Cyberspace
That Mitchell and Webb Sound

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated! Thank you Smile

I am currently loving Scarlett Moffatt Wants To Believe Blush

Also enjoyed...
You're Dead To Me
Plum House
Punt PI

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/06/2020 18:21

It's a Fair Cop by Alfie Moore. A policeman who does stand up comedy. Very funny.

I've also enjoyed My Teenage Diaries. Various slebs reading excerpts of their diaries of yesteryear and cringing.

Desert Island Discs. Huge back catalogue. I particularly recommend Dr David Nott.

Waiohwai · 21/06/2020 23:25

Oh yes, it's a fair cop. And thanks to the pp for tipping me off that in and out of the kitchen is on sounds - I've only heard bits of it.
But most of all: Cabin Pressure is brilliant.

nettie434 · 22/06/2020 05:22

I love It's a Fair Cop and The Unbelievable Truth. I quite like Ankle Tag which is about an ex con who has moved in with his son and daughter in law. They are both quite aspirational but end up being dragged into the dad's dodgy ways:

Apart from comedy, A Good Read and Great Lives are often interesting. I think they seem to have lots of episodes you can listen to, not just the 28 days. I wouldn't recommend the Moth Radio Hour (US public broadcast programme bought (shared with?) the BBC.

snappycamper · 22/06/2020 06:01

Came to recommend the unbelievable truth and the infinite monkey cage but I see others have already done so.

I also like the news quiz but that's just finished a series, will be back soon though.

More or less is brilliant if you have an analytical mind.

notso · 22/06/2020 06:05

Another one recommending In and Out of the Kitchen.

I really like Jenny Eclair's 15 min shorts. Little Lifetimes I think they're called. There's only 2 on sounds at the moment unfortunately.

I love Poirot, Miss Marple, Charles Paris, Agatha Raisin etc but maybe not for everyone.

Ellis James and John Robbins have a podcast that I really enjoy, it's called The isolation tapes at the moment. DH and I have listened since they were on Radio X, now they've moved to 5. They make us laugh a lot.

I'm going to try Cabin Pressure again. I always see it recommended but I wasn't a fan when it was on originally.

Joans3rddaughter · 22/06/2020 06:09

Desert Island Discs ( Ian Wright, but have a tissue ready)
For comedy I love all the "Tom Wrigglesworth" series. These are an individual story each episode about a family. My favourite is the episode about horse racing.

HeronLanyon · 22/06/2020 06:10

Will add
Conversations from a marriage
I’ve never seen Star Wars - people trying Humdrum things they’ve somehow never done seen eaten etc
Agree fully re Cabin Pressure. Saw Stephanie Cole (coles?) a few years ago In a supermarket and of all her amazing work this is what I thanked her for !
Back catalogue of Soul Music is great.

Constantly perplexed by variations in how long things are available for - subscribed to various things only to go back a few weeks later to listen and they’re sometimes gone sometimes available for years - can’t work out rationale no doubt to do with licensing ? - annoying !

HeronLanyon · 22/06/2020 06:13

It’s Conversations From A Long Marriage Grin search function isn’t great so think needs to be accurate !

Joans3rddaughter · 22/06/2020 06:17

On a serious note I like "The last word" . They are obituaries and are usually very interesting.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 22/06/2020 06:20

I have enjoyed More or Less or Radio 4, fascinating.

Longtalljosie · 22/06/2020 06:23

Less comedy - but check out The Missing Cryptoqueen. Incredibly good. And Fortunately with Fi and Jane.

daisypond · 22/06/2020 06:28

The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry - everyday scientific mysteries.

MyOtherProfile · 22/06/2020 06:34

Love all these. Have just discovered In and out the kitchen and Cabin Pressure.

PJsEveryday · 22/06/2020 06:36

As many posters have mentioned, Cabin Pressure. But I also love

Comedy-
Tom Wrigglesworth's hangups
How does that make you feel?
David sedaris
Start stop

Non comedy-
More or less

hiptobeasquare · 22/06/2020 06:42

Forest 404 is very good.
Prepper is funny.

Chaotic45 · 22/06/2020 06:45

Oooh yes, I loved How Does That Make You Feel.

InfiniteGerbils · 22/06/2020 06:52

The Unbelievable Truth
Natalie Haynes stands up for the Classics

  • both available now

Old episodes of Counterpoint are on too

The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry for science things

And nobody has mentioned the Museum of Curiosity yet, I love that. The ones with Lee Mack and Sally Philips as the curators are ace.

Finally, if you fancy a raucous scream, Tom Allen is not very nice is a hoot but don’t listen to it in bed, it’s NOT nighttime sleepy time radio.

If you can be arsed type “Paul Sinha” into the search bar and see if his “Citizenship Test” comes up, also try “Its Not Who You Know”, with either Miles Jupp or Joe Lycett as host. Keep searching as BBC Sounds is nuts and will re run things for seemingly no rhyme nor reason and vice versa.

getdownonit · 22/06/2020 06:52

Mark Steel's in Town.
Brilliant stand up taking the piss out of the town or place he's in. Really well researched which makes the local audience laugh.

The Forest of Dean one is particularly good. Or anywhere local to wherever you are as you will get it.

Sittinonthefloor · 22/06/2020 06:59

Cabin Pressure - has anyone mentioned that? SmileHut 33, Ankle Tag.

I like a lot of the stuff in the drama / crime section and the sci fi / thriller sections. And there are many, many episodes of In Our Time which are sort of interesting but perfect for listening to if you can’t get to sleep (sorry Melvin). There are some other good history series “The Invention of...” an overview of different countries history and “The Prime Ministers”.

getdownonit · 22/06/2020 07:03

I also love Ramblings with Claire Baldwin. So peaceful.....

devildeepbluesea · 22/06/2020 07:08

Most of my absolute nailed on recommendations have already been mentioned: Cabin Pressure, In And Out of the Kitchen, Old Harry's Game, Hut 33 and Ankle Tag. All good fun.

I would also put a shout out for Reluctant Persuaders, with Nigel Havers and Josie Lawrence about an advertising agency. Really funny. It doesn't come up in the sitcom section for some reason but search for it, it's there.

EmpressLangClegSpartacus · 22/06/2020 07:40

If you like The Infinite Monkey Cage, try The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry.
