Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

So glad that in his outrage Oliver didn't repudiateTracy personally, saving his irritation for the gossipmongers.

Pierrettelasanguinaire · 24/10/2019 20:40

What an utter load of rubbish. Joy must die. And Shula’s back, god help us.

Oh dearie me, chemenger. Perhaps The Archers is not for you . GrinGrinGrinGrin

HatingTheBigShow · 24/10/2019 20:59

Surely Peggy would be a responsible cat owner and have had Hilda neutered?

chemenger · 24/10/2019 22:47

Hilda must be neutered, they would not be putting up with Hilda in heat as well as being grumpy and mean.

If we’re going back to Shula in every episode Pierette may be right, I might have to stop listening, especially if Joy continues to be so prominent.

MrsGrindah · 24/10/2019 22:48

God tonight’s episode was a new low.

MrsGrindah · 24/10/2019 22:50

Just listened and seriously wondering why I’m bothering...it was like they’d deliberately rounded up the dullest characters and out them in the most boring/ ridiculous storylines just to see if they can get away with it.

Welshwabbit · 24/10/2019 23:53

I don't post very often (although I lurk quite a bit) but I saw the mention of Mustardland...how many old Mustardlanders are prepared to out themselves on here? I was one obviously, but under a different name.

EBearhug · 25/10/2019 00:39

Me. Not even with a very different name.

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 07:42

I was but have a different name on here.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/10/2019 07:46

Me, with a very different name! All the way back to (gulp) 2001, I think.

OP posts:
Welshwabbit · 25/10/2019 07:53

to Mustardlanders! EBearhug, I think we have done the Mustardland connection before. Whilst I post only occasionally I do enjoy dropping in here and seeing what everyone makes of the latest madness.

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 07:54

Even longer than me then Gasp. I think I was there about 2003 or 2004. I used one name for a while then another one.

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 25/10/2019 09:07

I used to lurk on Mustardland but I don't think I ever posted.

I have an ominous suspicion that things might deteriorate between Lily and CMR, she says it's over, then Lizzie realises she Can't Live Without Him because Feelings. Or some such utter rubbish. She's getting far too dependent on the snobbish, drawling nitwit and cant see he's a wrong'un.

'The divorce is all in hand' - pah!

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/10/2019 09:19

Another former Mustardlander here - I was under a different name there.

birdsdestiny · 25/10/2019 09:21

Is he just putting off the divorce for financial reasons or is he still seeing his wife.

SurpriseSparDay · 25/10/2019 09:42

TA is bad at divorce.

Bad enough when the characters are only loosely attached to Ambridge (at the time) like Tiger or Justin - was all high jinks and hiding random paintings, ski chalets and off shore investments.

But staggeringly dreadful when the divorce mattered to listeners - Roy and Hayley (I still have no idea,) Rob and Jess ...

There was admittedly more detail with Shula and Alistair - in that instance it was the motivation that seemed ... murky. I still cannot see why it was necessary for any story. Nothing’s really changed, no one has left the village ...

I guess Rob and Helen’s divorce seemed, (paradoxically after all the custard melodrama,) to portray something closest to a real life. At least it wasn’t played for lols.

Speaking of Shula ... I’m going to stay at a theological college in Oxford soon; reading about the arrangements for ordinands who might want to ‘weekly board’ and go home at weekends - I couldn’t help but think of her ...

ppeatfruit · 25/10/2019 09:58

I've heard many worse eps. than last night's, I liked the sisters chat, that was quite like RL. They are both immature considering their ages, but dsis and I can be the same and we're in our 60s Grin

Oh and thank you Gasp for the new thread.

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 10:51

I'm curious about the Mustardlanders. I recognise some of the names.
I joined MN to talk about TA and was on Sue's mustardland.

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 10:54

I wonder if Mermaid from ML is on here.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/10/2019 11:17

I don't think Mermaid would like MN, MUM - too sweary Grin

MikeUniformMike · 25/10/2019 11:19

Confused. Really? I loved the way she referred to the various members of the Merfamily.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/10/2019 11:21

Ah well, we all see things differently. Have PMed you

HelloYouTwo · 25/10/2019 11:22

All the cat stuff is very silly, but I always enjoy Kate. She’d be one of those mothers at primary school who would complain they didn’t know about dress-up day despite it being in a newsletter, on Facebook, on an email and on the playground notice board (bitter memories of working in a school office and dealing with Kates many many times...)

SurpriseSparDay · 25/10/2019 11:38

The Joy Intervention has been nonsensical but I loved hearing Kate, Alice and Peggy gathered at the door exclaiming in excited relief. Was beautifully done and felt completely true to life.

chemenger · 25/10/2019 12:14

I enjoyed Kate and Alice, Kate is a monstrous character but at least she’s consistently monstrous. I’m glad Hilda’s back, clearly the white cat’s owner has been feeding her thinking she was a stray, but I’m sure Joy will take the credit at length. All in all I thought that was a good episode. Lots of little references to the past (Alice needing something stronger to drink to tackle Kate, Lily organising the hunt ball when Elizabeth was ill). It seemed a more integrated episode than recently where each story line exists in a vacuum unrelated to all the rest of the village.
