Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

My prediction is that it will all go tits up with Lily and Russ and he'll sue for constructive dismissal or something

He hasn't been there long enough to have employment rights unless he could show they had discriminated against him based on a protected characteristic.

What I think will happen is he will bleat that Lily has ruined his life ; he gave up his career and his wife for her ; he can't go back to teaching (unless there are still 4th rate public schools a la the one in Decline and Fall who don't ask questions or pay much) so he is morally entitled to a payment. And Elizabeth is dim enough to pay up.

UnholyStramash · 07/11/2019 18:36

I’d like to think CMR was never married to Lara, or anyone. That every few years, starting at around the age of 24, he’s picked up and seduced 18 yo students, strung each one along with the tale of the fantasy marriage, the ‘fragile wife’ he can’t divorce., etc. At some point surely Lara and Lilly can have a proper conversation and CMR will be rumbled. Oh well, maybe not. Smile

Eastie77 · 07/11/2019 19:13

Shula is behaving as if she is still married. "We'll talk later"

SurpriseSparDay · 07/11/2019 19:14

Friends?

Ha!

R4 · 07/11/2019 19:18

Spooky. Did you notice the talk of 'elevensies', D^3.Grin

DadDadDad · 07/11/2019 19:41
Grin

I guarantee now for the next week you'll swear that the number 11 is following you around. It will seem to crop up far more than expected by chance...

UnholyStramash · 07/11/2019 19:55

Now that Caroline’s dead and she’s divorced Shula does seem quite short on friends. Maybe it’s a feature of getting older - for some it is definitely but not all of course- but she does have a sister who’d probably make all the right sounds. And a mother - who might or might not.

LillianGish · 07/11/2019 20:03

Shula as vicar is just too tedious. What do you think the plan is? Usha has already been consigned to the vicarage cereal cupboard - is Alan going the same way? Also have you noticed she never makes so much as a passing reference to Dan anymore - although with November 11 fast approaching (R4 Grin) maybe he'll get an honourable mention.

Eastie77 · 07/11/2019 21:15

Completely forgot about Dan! Did he go to Sandhurst? Where is he now? The only thing I can remember is he had a girlfriend called Dorothy at some point.

MrsGrindah · 07/11/2019 21:26

I don’t know why they think we give a single fig about Shula and The Bloody Church. Or Helen and The Chuffing Cheese. She makes a batch of one type of cheese once in a Borcester Blue Moon and suddenly she’s a major national supplier.

Over600Ecalypts · 07/11/2019 21:44

And Helen has completely forgotten about Tom's escapades with trying to supply supermarkets. Oh wait, that was the old Tom. Hmm Hmm

Beveren · 08/11/2019 00:09

Jim would NEVER talk about "stepping foot" in the tearoom. He'd be horrified at the very thought.

EBearhug · 08/11/2019 00:52

The only thing I can remember is he had a girlfriend called Dorothy at some point.

Had being the correct tense.

He's in the army somewhere in the world. Dorothy dumped him early this year sometime. It caused Shula some distress for about two scenes and then Dan had never been mentioned again. He obviously saw Jamie Perks in the lane last time he was home, and they're both now trapped in a cereal cupboard for all eternity.

HelloYouTwo · 08/11/2019 09:04

I like the idea of TA going Twilight Zone / Les Revenants ... villagers will start whispering about how people have mysteriously disappeared, sometimes for years or a few months. There’s rumours of a place, a cover up that was called a sink hole by the local authorities, but deep down the locals know you mustn’t go there or you too might be sucked into the cereal cupboard of doom. Sometimes you’ll come back, with a completely different voice, but everyone will pretend not notice and they just carry on as normal. But underneath they all know that any point they too might find themselves in the strange underworld populated by silents, cast-offs and forgotten storylines.

LillianGish · 08/11/2019 09:54

Helloyoutwo 😂😂 Brilliant! Which remind someone me that the sinkhole itself has been consigned to the cereal cupboard.

one of my colleagues smirks and says “of course if you cycle this doesn’t affect you”.

"Do you plan to continue to mock my disability in that unpleasant way?"

MikeUniformMike · 08/11/2019 10:15

Dan is conveniently away.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/11/2019 11:25

Does anyone cycle in Ambridge? I don't cycle because I never learned as a child and am far too much of a wimp to try it in London at my advanced age . I think I'd be no more inclined to do it on country lanes where cars hurtle round blind corners at speed, often driven by people who've had a long session at the pub first (most of my knowledge of country life comes from TA, as may be evident).

MikeUniformMike · 08/11/2019 11:35

Lynda cycles. Ben used to - went off for months at a time before returning to the cereal cupboard, and Emma used to cycle to the Dower House when she and William were courting.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/11/2019 11:39

That's right, I'd forgotten all that.

I did like the scenes last night between Eddie and Emma. Very touching. I'm also glad Oliver and Tracy have made up and that Alistair and Jim are getting on so well.

Will be listening with tissue box close at hand tonight. Sad

Frilly have cycled in the past. Didn’t Lily grab a bike to drag Freddie home from the Stables when Nigel’s sister visited LL recently?

SurpriseSparDay · 08/11/2019 11:42

Yes, Tracy’s “Mr Sterling” coolness was excellent. And Oliver is clearly mad about her.

They are so going to end up together.
