Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

I think the reason CMR is putting off getting a divorce is that he cannot afford a lawyer and knows he's going to be taken to the cleaners. It would be stretching even his cheekiness for him to ask for a loan for this purpose, but who knows.

I so, so hope that CMR gets kicked out as far out of Borsetshire as they can. He's a creep, and to have any script line that allows a creep to benefit from his creepiness makes me sick.

MissBarbary · 06/11/2019 10:05

Why would he be taken to the cleaners?

His wife is in her mid 20s, works, they can't have been married for long and they have no children. A husband isn't a meal ticket for life. The court would divvy up any matrimonial assets acquired jointly but otherwise CMR and Mrs CMR should be put in to the position they would be in if the marriage had never happened.

Madcats · 06/11/2019 10:36

I actually enjoyed that episode, even though Lily and Johnnie trying to sound drunk wasn't their finest acting. I can't wait to see how they fix the Lily and CMR storyline.

Gosh, Helen is really sniffy about Beechwood (especially since her family made a lot of money from selling that land and her bestie, Kirstie, lives there).

The timing of the lanterns and sick cows would have been better if they had been lit to "remember"Joe later in the week. [There was a 10-minute rule bill outlawing them in March this year, which is presumably now on hold].

That must have been the first time I have heard Helen EVER get involved with the livestock, aside from choosing a few cows online, or do I have selective amnesia?

I assumed she was talking about Beechwood as they are the only houses near to the farmland. If they didn't come from PatNTony then Beechwood would be the logical alternative surely?

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 06/11/2019 10:55

I reckon Lily is going to chuck CMR out... and then Lizzie will take him in. (Just kidding... I think...)

Hi again. I’m getting wildly behind and then binge listening/reading this thread once I’ve caught up!

LillianGish · 06/11/2019 10:58

That must have been the first time I have heard Helen EVER get involved with the livestock, aside from choosing a few cows online, or do I have selective amnesia? But these are her precious Montbeliards - the ones she went round personally thanking the other day for helping produce the award-winning Borsetshire Blue. Curious to see what happens with the Big Cheese cheeseman - it’s so long since Tom and Gnasher have been heard I’ve completely forgotten everything about their plans, but it sounds like it’s Helen’s project (with herdsman Jonny’s help - Bridge Farm’s True Heir) that will be the making of Bridge Farm for the moment so I foresee conflict ahead. A proper farming drama at last dare I hope.

impostersyndrome · 06/11/2019 11:02

Of course, you're right MissBarbary, but maybe he's worried about losing access to his fancy kettle?

TherapistInATabard · 06/11/2019 13:50

My prediction is that it will all go tits up with Lily and Russ and he'll sue for constructive dismissal or something.

Beveren · 06/11/2019 16:25

I wonder if Mr Cheese is going to be Helen's next love interest?

Motoko · 06/11/2019 16:40

Oh god, no! Helen can't handle relationships.

Motoko · 06/11/2019 16:50

Also, I didn't like the way she dismissed Kirstie, when she was asking Helen how things would work, if she got a deal with the cheese man. Does she expect Clarrie and Susan to be able to double/triple/more, the productivity, and surely she'll need a bigger place, going by Clarrie and Susan having to squeeze past each other (when they'd first fallen out, Susan wouldn't move, and Clarrie ended up dropping whatever she was carrying as she tried to squeeze past).

Does she have the money and space to enlarge the premises?

R4 · 06/11/2019 17:01

Does she have the money and space to enlarge the premises?
They have the money from Beechwood. IIRC, she wanted to set up a training facility for cheese-making but pulled out when she realised that it was a non-starter so it sounds like they have space too.
Are Beechwood, thinking that they were living the rural idyll dream on the doorstep of an organic farm, going to end up next door to an industrial scale cheese factory?Grin

chemenger · 06/11/2019 17:37

Joy will be leading the Beechwood opposition to planning permission for the extended dairy, I think.

impostersyndrome · 06/11/2019 18:01

Why was Mr Cheese so impressed with the farm (and with the shouty Helen)? We went from a scene of her shouting down the phone for a vet to her having apparently closed the deal of the century while overlooking a bloody scene in a field (I exaggerate only slightly). Yet again the scriptwriters stretch our credulity to the limits.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2019 18:52

Why was Mr Cheese so impressed with the farm (and with the shouty Helen)?

Love at first sight, I hope. To be followed in short order by undramatic wooing and winning, ideally out of our earshot.

Surely the scales have fallen from Lily's eyes now? But Lizzie is worryingly dependent on CMR and she may not want to sack him.

Anyway, despite the bad drunk acting, I hope we never forget that Johnny's bird is his wand.

StillWeRise · 06/11/2019 19:08

surely whatever Russ is doing, Lizzie can do just as well

StillWeRise · 06/11/2019 19:09

yes yes move out

Taswama · 06/11/2019 19:10

Yes, loved that too Errol

SurpriseSparDay · 06/11/2019 19:17

Well well well. Clever old me.

Exactly as I predicted on the other thread.

Halloween AngryHalloween Angry

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2019 19:24

Oh Lily...SadAngry

No, you can't trust him. Do you really think it's just coincidence CMRs ex is young? (Id forgotten lily is still only 19). Hmm

Motoko · 06/11/2019 19:43

This hangover cure, how are they going to be sell it, considering it contains a manufactured cough medicine? I'm sure the makers of that would have something to say about it, not to mention the likes of the Food Standards Agency, and all the rules surrounding over the counter medicines (which this would be)?

I mean, I know the Grundies don't let stuff like rules and regulations bother them, but really?

I was really hoping Lily was going to chuck Russ. Just hope he still doesn't bother with the divorce, so she finally realises he's a cocklodger, and gets rid of him.

BTW, she got down to 26 when asking how old Lara was, so he must have got together with Lara when she was, at least, not much older than Lily is now, depending on how long they were together. He definitely likes them young. (I've always imagined him to be around 36/38ish.)

MikeUniformMike · 06/11/2019 19:46

I love Johnny and love him even more for his bird is his wand comment.
Silly Lily.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/11/2019 19:49

Mokoto- I thought Eddie had realised that Johnny was the exception and all the other kids were feeling terrible?

Bartley and trap predictable but nice.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 06/11/2019 19:50

Why did Johnny come running to Helen to tell her to ring Alistair?

Surely, he wasted potentially vital, life-saving minutes tracking her down. Why not just ring Alistair immediately himself, and then go and tell Helen what was happening?

Isn't he supposed to be in charge of those cows?

Motoko · 06/11/2019 20:53

ErrolTheDragon He did, but he said they just needed to tweak it. He also said, (which I thought didn't make sense, considering it hadn't worked for any of the others) that if it worked for Jonny, it would work for anyone.
