Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Joy's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all the input on title suggestions. I'd missed the significance of 111, but @R4 and DDD, our resident numerologist, were right on to it. Strongly tempted by Bore's suggestion but couldn't resist the chance to mention my favourite ever Archers character, Nelson Gabriel. Have not managed to incorporate a cricket reference, so you'll have to read up on that for yourselves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_(cricket)

I wonder if this thread will last till Joe's funeral.

And yes she is the disapproving voice- but sometimes rightly so!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/10/2019 09:33

Carmen Haveago - I'd missed that excruciating pun and I am ruthlessly blocking out of my mind the next part of the phrase. Envy

I don’t get the Shula hate actually. Never have done.

No, nor me.

TheSilveryPussycat · 30/10/2019 11:02

Another one who doesn't hate Shula. Agree she's an ordinary flawed human being who is trying to do good. She gets it wrong sometimes of course - in character driven story lines.

Aghast at Freddie.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/10/2019 11:19

Most exciting thing he ever did that I can recall was dying in a car crash.
Did the crash happen while he was talking to Shula on his mobile phone or did I imagine that completely?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/10/2019 12:21

What's baffling me at the moment, is why it's taking so long to have Joe's funeral Confused

I haven't missed it, have I?

It'll be three weeks tomorrow since he SOTMC, and I'm pretty sure a post mortem or inquest wouldn't have been necessary.

Both of my parents were buried within nine days of dying, so what's the hold-up?

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2019 12:27

Yes- Mark was on the phone to Shula when he died. Another bit of public informationing......

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/10/2019 12:47

I, too, wondered if the drag artiste will turn out to be Eddie and Alf's secret half-brother.

Which, in turn, started me thinking about Joy. I wouldn't be surprised if she isn't related to Ruth in some way.

Maybe she's Ruth's real Mother!

Heatherpet and her husband could have adopted her as a new-born, and never told anyone. Stranger things have happened.

Does Ruth have any siblings within Heatherpet's family?

Ruth and Rochelle might be sisters Shock

SurpriseSparDay · 30/10/2019 12:51

what's the hold-up?

Outside of the artificial machinations of plot - perhaps they might argue that Alan, flitting between 97 parishes, didn’t have a free slot in his Ambridge shift until November 8th? (That would be more convincing to me than the church itself not being free.)

Anyway, it gives Carmen mère time to slim into her widow’s weeds and make her CoroEnderDale entrance right at the start of the eulogy.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/10/2019 13:09

Makes you wonder, doesn't it.....?

Motoko · 30/10/2019 14:06

My main gripe with Shula is that her voice always sounds so strained, like talking is so hard.

I also don't like how she dumped Alistair, saying she wanted to do something exciting with her life and he was holding her back, only to then carry on as if they're still married, and doing nothing exciting. It was all so pointless.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/10/2019 14:07

If nobody says 'scrumping' anymore, what do they say?

Beveren · 30/10/2019 15:18

I took it to be NewEd killing off one of OldEd's plotlines.

Probably, particularly given the semi-resolution of the church collection theft. But I have to say the whey gin wasn't even close to the top of my list of unresolved issues in TA. What degree grade did Phoebe get, for instance, and how come Jamie Perks' tree surgery course is taking so long?

MikeUniformMike · 30/10/2019 18:29

Ruth and KillJoy are half-sisters, Joyless is in Ambridge to claim her rightful inheritance. The Dopeys will live in a caravan at Hollowtree.

Carmen Havago is a half-sibling of Eddie and Alf's and will bring his drag act to The Bulls**t.

The Aldridges are half-siblings to each other.

I really like Shula.

R4 · 30/10/2019 19:24

What's going on.
I want my Archers back.
Sad

MikeUniformMike · 30/10/2019 19:36

In-EEERN! Sort those pesky SWs out. Please.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/10/2019 19:42

I really wish people wouldn't do that over-emphasised talking-while-eating thing on the radio Angry It makes me cringe.

Also, did anyone else think that tonight's Carmen was played by the same actor who played last night's (drag queen) Carmen Avvago?

They sound suspiciously similar....

And both equally as annoying 😖

MissBarbary · 30/10/2019 20:04

I really hate Alf. The Carmen Haveago story line is beyond ridiculous.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/10/2019 20:15

I thought it was supposed to be the same Carmen. Did I miss something?

Pierrettelasanguinaire · 30/10/2019 20:34

Very loyal
Except when it comes to binning a dull but inoffensive (he really wasn't in LTB territory) husband for no good - or at least fully articulated - reason and letting half the village know about his gambling 'problem'.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 30/10/2019 20:39

Yes, Captain, the lady Eddie and Alf visited tonight was the drag artiste's Mother. He named his on-stage persona after his Mum!

MrsGrindah · 30/10/2019 21:31

It’s getting unrecognisable now. I wish they’d stop it with the “ comedy” storylines. Wasn’t it HILARIOUS how Alice brought Kate and Jakob together? I didn’t see it coming at all.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/10/2019 22:29

It has been awful lately.

HatingTheBigShow · 30/10/2019 23:29

I actually want to stop listening, it's that bad. Wonder what happens on 6 Music at 7pm.

Beveren · 30/10/2019 23:36

The trouble with the Carmen storyline is that Clarrie nailed it when she pointed out that, if Joe had had any money, they wouldn't have to move out. She's so obviously right that Eddie should logically have told Alf to get lost, but that would be too sensible.
