The Archers #109: Pulp Fiction! Hammer Horror (Tracy), Carry On (Brian & Neil), Call the Midwife (Adam, Ian, Lexi) - but no political thrillers, Ambridge remains Brexit-free. Nitpick here!

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to Bucking Frolics and LillianGish for the title ideas, which I had to edit down a bit to get under the character limit.

I wonder if Lily will have gone back to Manchester by the time we've filled this thread.

Yes silly me Blush I was just wondering , because of the sheenanigans with Will and the shotgun (which I missed) if Poppy was there at the time or at Bev's. What exactly happened ? It wasn't clear in the succeeding eps.

Oh and Lexi is played by a woman from the part of the world she's supposed to be from ( I think)

The birth scene was well played and not too badly written despite Jenny carrying on her MILzilla character. Is Lexi going to breast feed baby Macey? That'll cause ructions.

FannyCann · 24/09/2019 17:25

ArgumentativeAardvaark
This poor surrogate mother was filmed while giving birth and the fathers of her baby cracked distasteful jokes about her on TV.
I think commissioning parents often expect to be present in the labour room and to have a say in the management of the birth. Just one of the many reasons surrogacy is abusive.

StillWeRise · 24/09/2019 17:39

that's awful
I hope the people deliberating on the changes to our laws around surrogacy watch that programme

birdsdestiny · 24/09/2019 17:43

I wouldn't hold out much hope for that.
Didn't Will have the shotgun because Bev had taken Poppy. I think that was what sparked the gun incident.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 24/09/2019 19:08

Lexi is played by Ania Sowinski, who gives "East European" as a dialect skill with her agent; she is British, born and brought up in London, with Polish ancestry and Polish as her other language.

Polish is West Slavic, Bulgarian is South Slavic. They're not the same, and "East European" is a huge area to put under a single banner.

StillWeRise · 24/09/2019 19:10

oooh, topical insert

HatingTheBigShow · 24/09/2019 19:25

Place your bets now on Lexi's confession...

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 24/09/2019 19:30

And again, according to Clarrie, 'Adam and Ian have had their baby'. Neatly erasing the gestational carrier from the process.

Motoko · 24/09/2019 19:34

Well, the baby is now home with Adam and Ian. No mention of Lexi though.

Lil should have told Brian what Justin's up to. And if someone had given my phone number to Vince Casey, I'd have been very peed off with them. Plus, surely Shula has the same knowledge of horses, to steer him towards buying his daughter a more suitable horse, so why didn't she? (Obviously because of the script development, but it doesn't make sense.)

Thanks for giving your real life experience of surrogacy @Iwannabeadog. It's good to hear from someone who has actually experienced it, and put across another viewpoint, that shows that it's not always about rich people paying for babies from poor women. The previous discussions about this were very one-sided.

IrisAtwood · 24/09/2019 21:19

Anyone else having problems finding tonight’s episode?

Madcats · 24/09/2019 21:26

I couldn't load it about 7:20pm (tried Sounds and the Archers episodes page).

Annoying as I only caught the last 5 minutes or so and was also wondering whether Vince drove Lillian home and would be drunk too.

LillianGish · 24/09/2019 22:04

Thank you Iwannabeadog - your experience is one I recognise from my own experience of friends who have used surrogacy.

StillWeRise · 24/09/2019 23:05

yes, thank you Iwannabeadog

BirdOffTheWire · 25/09/2019 05:58

Yes, another thank you from me, Iwannabeadog.

Also, I completely missed last night's tropical insert, could anyone kindly tell me who made the reference and at roughly how many minutes in, please? I'll make a guess it was Vince and Lilian at the Feathers! I thought Eddie was excellent again but it all turned a bit hopeless in the end. Very sad. I don't like this Will and guns storyline at all, myself.

chemenger · 25/09/2019 07:26

Eddie said that everyone was talking about what was happening in parliament at the market, when he first went to see William at his house.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/09/2019 07:26

Eddie made a reference to 'what's going on in Parliament'.

TheOliphantintheRoom · 25/09/2019 07:59

The MysticOliphant predicts that Lexi will be unable to completely let go of her baby, Adam & Ian will reluctantly agree to co-parent with her, she will bring her girls to Ambridge and they'll become a family with Roy.

MysticOliphant respectfully awaits the opinion of older and wiser MysticBore.

BoreOfWhabylon · 25/09/2019 08:04

MysticBore™️ and the 🔮 say you have done well in your prognostications, Grasshopper*.

*Only old gimmers like me will understand this reference.

BirdOffTheWire · 25/09/2019 08:09

Thanks, chemenger and Captain, I completely missed that - spectacularly wrong in my musings, as usual!
MysticOliphant - I like it! Also, Ian could go back to GG and not have his kitchen ruined by Hugh and Freddie Wink

Motoko · 25/09/2019 08:32

Haha, I loved that show!

Lil got a cab back, as she told the driver to keep the change.

On second listening to Sunday night's episode, Lexi did tell Kirsty she was feeling guilty about not allowing Ian and Adam in for the birth, because they'd really wanted to be there, so she'd let them down.

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 25/09/2019 09:35

What could William do if he wasn't a gamekeeper? If he gave up his job he'd lose the house, though he does have his house on the Green to go to, Poppy would have further upheaval moving from the home she's grown up in, they'd have to give some sort of explanation to Bev, all of Ambridge would be speculating....

Why isn't Eddie worried about the impact on Will if he does stop being a gamekeeper?

Nah its cult - my kids know that reference!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

Oh I claim no inside knowledge of the events I was simply responding to the statement of fact "Cross dressing doesn't make him trans".

I have more than once been "corrected" by local woke central for describing someone as transexual or transvestite (terms the people in question preferred but apparently that didn't count!)

BTW been meaning to ask you - do you have a copy of the archive or are you using archive.org? I didn't always agreen with the summaries but they were a gold mine of checking dates/events etc and I do miss them being hosted.

MollyButton · 25/09/2019 09:48

Because the implications of someone who is mentally unfit having a Gun license is far more serious.
William could have injured or even killed any of: Ed, Eddie or Emma that night. Emma was obviously worried that he could have done something to Poppy.
If Will had been honest with any of the professionals he's seen, including the Doctor he would not have his Gun license now.

www.lowfield.co.uk/ is up and running again after their server difficulties. I got their permission to copy and keep the ones which they produced and posted at www.paranormal.org.uk/mustardland/index.php during the time their own server wasn't working, so I have those myself, with about four missing between Lowfield stopping and Peet's starting. Some time I really ought to write the ones I am missing so that I have a complete run since 1998 available if I want it...

than him driving his car into someone in another vehicle in order to kill himself, for instance.

As Will sensibly pointed out, they would need to take away all sharp knives everywhere Will might be, for instance. People in this country have run amok with knives before now. Until Ed went for him, Will was planning to kill himself, not anyone else, and the danger he might do that now is exactly the same whether he has a gun or not.
