Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to Bucking Frolics and LillianGish for the title ideas, which I had to edit down a bit to get under the character limit.

I wonder if Lily will have gone back to Manchester by the time we've filled this thread.

Could they rewild Brian's toxic fields?
Has Phoebe had her results yet?

ScruffGin · 04/09/2019 21:52

Not heard tonight though, but
a) surely a charitable fund wouldn't be hit by inheritance tax? That would be quite unfair to charities in general...
b) if Will admits to his GP exactly what happened, it would be reported to the police and social services, unfortunately for him. He would in all likelihood lose his gun license and job. Wouldn't mean he lost Poppy though, but social services would be involved.

Fink · 04/09/2019 21:53

I haven't heard tonight's episode. Is this for the re-wilding? 400 acres of land in Borsetshire will be around £2.8 to £3.2 million.

Peggy isn't expecting them to buy/ lease all of it, she mentioned getting their families on board. Ruth has already said a very definite no to having any Brookfield land.

They're not getting any money till after they've got 60% of the land.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/09/2019 22:10

Nic has a brother in I think it was New Zealand called either Joe or Joel, and one in Scotland called Rod. Rod read a poem at her funeral, or at least, Emma said that was planned while she was talking Will into going to it.

I thought what Ruth was suggesting was that they might have to hire a herdsman instead of Pip if Pip was going to be unreliable, not as well as.

R4 · 04/09/2019 22:11

The conversation between Peggy and the rewilding team was ridiculous. Peggy chose the scheme despite seeing the glaring error in the plan. She is then putting impossible conditions on it (holding back money, imposing unrealistic timeframes) so it will fail and make her look like a fool.

MargueritaBlue · 04/09/2019 22:14

This isn't a charity

MargueritaBlue · 04/09/2019 22:17

Do any of the script writers live in the real world?

MargueritaBlue · 04/09/2019 22:21

Boop , boop, boop Ruth.

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 04/09/2019 22:42

Was jobless Phoebe envisaging that she could draw a salary from the £500,000?

MargueritaBlue · 04/09/2019 22:43

Assuming that this ridiculous idea was set up as a trust (it sounds more like a straightforward competition to me) the 7 years rule still applies.

MargueritaBlue · 04/09/2019 22:45

And we thought the GG ghost had plummeted the depths of nonsense....

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 04/09/2019 22:58

When Peggy was talking to them, she referred to "your family farms" Pip's "family farm" is Brookfield. Is Home Farm Phoebe's "family farm" ? Rex doesn't have a "family farm"

"Your family farms" doesn't make sense, does it?

R4 · 04/09/2019 22:58

I'm quite cross about the conservation thing. I thought that the storyline was meant to be a nice 100th birthday present to June Spencer but it seems instead to be (a) a load of poorly researched bolleaux and (b) a device to cause unnecessary, manufactured division and turmoil.

In the last few weeks Emma has discovered that:
-Ed was doing dodgy things with Timotei
-Will knew about it, and covered it up until he blurted it out to Adam
-Nic killed Matt
-Ed knew about it, and covered it up.

Matt isn’t dead @R4!

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 04/09/2019 23:12

Quotation fail.

I’ll try again

Tonnerre · 04/09/2019 23:18

I really can't understand how the project got approved without something reasonably concrete over and above "with any luck we'll find some land if you're ever mad enough to award us the prize".

If they got the prize on the premise that they'd be able to twist relatives' arms to get the land cheaply, then frankly that's simply dishonest.

BoggiesBonnieBelle · 05/09/2019 00:05

If Brookfield has 469 acres (according to Wiki) then, even if Ruth was willing to allocate some land to Pip, there just isn't enough. 100 acres would be over a fifth of Brookfield, and 100 acres wouldn't help Pip out enough.

Phoebe is going to have to try to sweet talk some land out of Home Farm.

OwnerofanAngryCat · 05/09/2019 00:11

The whole thing is pathetic, it's like they are doing a year six end of term project and Peggy is the teacher rewarding them with chocolate medals for good work.

They haven't identified any land, let alone carried out any feasibility studies. They don't have any milestones or key indicators in place, they have no idea of timescales, they don't appear to have recruited any advisors, they have no specialist knowledge, they seemed surprised by Peggy's , admittedly flaky, statements on funding and progress reports, Surely all this would have been set out in the written contract. They do have a contract don't they? No idea how they are meant to fund anything until Peggy releases the money.

But at least they are enthusiastic.

Good knows how little effort the script writers put into this pile of poo.

MargueritaBlue · 05/09/2019 00:14

There are so many different types of stupid to this storyline.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/09/2019 00:48

Thanks Gasp0de - you've excelled yourself with the latest title!

Such a contrast between Roof's caring, cooing voice and the one we heard tonight Grin

Fink · 05/09/2019 06:14

Ok, I'd forgotten about Nic's brothers, thanks to those with better Archers memories.

But the point stands that they're not on hand to provide childcare so Bev is trying to hold down a job and caring for a young child, having had no notice to prepare for this, with only the help of a couple of teenagers and possibly a couple of unrelated adults (who are most likely also working).

birdsdestiny · 05/09/2019 06:56

But most people manage to hold down a job and look after children. She probably took some annual leave and then organised some after school clubs. Just because no one else in TA has a clue about childcare doesn't mean Bev cant sort this out.

Tonnerre · 05/09/2019 08:40

I think I'm definitely going to have to listen again to last night's episode, it was such a treat to hear Pip being shouted at.

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 05/09/2019 08:40

Yes, Ruth's two voices are always a treat. Whispery Murmur vs Snarl of Rage Grin

chemenger · 05/09/2019 08:43

Go Ruth.

Pip is like Boris Johnson, going through life assuming she’s entitled to be centre stage all the time and that everyone around her will fall in and do the hard work for her. He’s been given a kicking by the elders of his own party, she’s been given a kicking by her normally worshipping mother. But...I have a horrible feeling David will play to type and put Pip back on her pedestal.

I don’t see Adam handing over land to Phoebe, we listened to a lot of debate about “spare” land when they were trying to raise money for the contaminated land fine, there didn’t seem to be any.
