The Archers #109: Pulp Fiction! Hammer Horror (Tracy), Carry On (Brian & Neil), Call the Midwife (Adam, Ian, Lexi) - but no political thrillers, Ambridge remains Brexit-free. Nitpick here!

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to Bucking Frolics and LillianGish for the title ideas, which I had to edit down a bit to get under the character limit.

I wonder if Lily will have gone back to Manchester by the time we've filled this thread.

‘Lexington Craig-Macy’ has a fine swing to it!

A pity that Mungo Snell-Bellamy is five (Shock) now, so a bit old to be his best friend.

He’ll have to be satisfied with Rosie Archer ...

BertrandRussell · 27/09/2019 10:05

We haven’t heard from or about Ian’s dad for a while....

C8H10N4O2 · 27/09/2019 10:06

Jenny’s the only one, including the midwife who has actually given birth. So she’s the only one who is going to wonder whether Lexington can actually go through with it

Yes my assumption was that she was expressing exactly that fear. However I still think the LSWs representations of her in recent weeks have been completely out of character - more "silly Jenny" which always irritates me.

BertrandRussell · 27/09/2019 10:10

“However I still think the LSWs representations of her in recent weeks have been completely out of character“
I agree. Actually her behaviour towards Lexi has been very odd, right from the beginning with that caravan cleaning nonsense. And the elders and betters thing. Not Jenny at all.
Incidentally, Lexington was my phone being inspired. No credit to me at all......

campion · 27/09/2019 10:12

If he's not already conveniently dead Bertrand he'll be fine with the latest developments. Like all of Ambridge.

ppeatfruit · 27/09/2019 10:12

Yes *Motoko I agree about the Victorian philanthropists but I reckon they were in the minority then as those types are now. The factory acts banning the use of children in mines and under 9 year olds working at the looms wouldn't have been needed would they?

chemenger · 27/09/2019 10:22

SW1 - I feel we’re dropping our smutty joke rate a little, as we discussed before, if our ongoing strategy is to engage with a younger audience willy jokes are a key tactic.

Intern (muttering) - thank god I start back at uni soon.

SW2 - trouble is I think we’ve used all the male characters in this strategy, unless we go for Bert? We’d have to let him speak though and that’s not due for another three months.

Intern- Actually Mumsnet really hates the willy jokes.

SW 1 - I think we’ve heard enough of Mumsnet. It’s quite enough that we’ve had to reduce the amount of airtime Shula gets, even though we know that actually religious angst and plastic bottle art are some of our more popular themes. When do you finish here?

Intern- couple of weeks (muttering) thankfully.

SW2- I have it! Animal willy jokes! There are loads of animals, I think they probably have sex, maybe that’s something you could usefully research, intern person?

Intern- I have a name.

SW1 - and that is relevant why? At the BBC you have to earn a name, you can’t just claim to have one.

Oh, I do hope the intern isn't going to leave soon! Can she have a relative who wangles it with the Beeb for her to continue the internship beyond the end of the vacation? Surely it's essential to her degree?

MikeUniformMike · 27/09/2019 11:45

There are always interns. Maybe a new one next month doing gap-yah?
We could have some new youthful cast members... we can never get enough of them.
Maybe Lexi's daughters Wioletta and Wiennetta could come over, some long lost Horrobin nephew (Brad?) could transition ...

chemenger · 27/09/2019 12:00

I think media studies students probably do term time internships, don’t they?

ppeatfruit · 27/09/2019 12:00

Thinking about it the SWs haven't changed JD's character she has always had a snobby ,lady of the manor, side to her, since marrying the Squire Brian and 'going up in the world. Think about her reaction to Alice marrying Chris Carter Shock In Las Vegas, of all places!!!!!

HelloYouTwo · 27/09/2019 12:09

I love chemenger’s intern. Could the intern stay, like Will in W1A who just kept coming to work for months after his placement ended? And then saved the day with randomly brilliant ideas and well placed contacts.

chemenger · 27/09/2019 12:17

I was at an event recently where an ex BBC journalist who had worked on the Today programme said he couldn’t watch WA1 because it was too close to reality to be funny.

chemenger · 27/09/2019 12:18

Unlike the actual SWs I can’t compromise my intern’s character by randomly making her want to stay on Grin

Madcats · 27/09/2019 12:47

Can't Chemenger's intern be on a sandwich course: They seem very popular at our local Uni.

If the intern is female, however, going back to Uni (or not, as the case may be) is a waste of time. She'd be better off doing telesales or doing nothing at all. If it is good enough for the young ladies of Ambridge....

Who IS funding Phoebe, by the way? Presumably she is running a car and must have had some living expenses for the past three months. Peggy was quite clear that they weren't getting any set-up costs.

Definitely! So your intern (or her clone) should certainly be staying on, chemenger.

No mention of Helen at all? Weird.

QuaterMiss · 29/09/2019 12:18

Herocomplex, we’re on the new thread linked just above your post.

Herocomplex · 29/09/2019 12:42

Thank you, spotted it just after posting 😬
