Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @QuaterMiss for the title of this thread. For reasons of space had to cut out the bit speculating about Oliver and Tracy pairing off. Surely not! Shock

Off now to give blood, something nobody in Ambridge ever does. Hmm See you all later.

While I enjoyed Kate's unhorsing it was based on a most unlikely conversation. Why on earth would anyone, never mind Peggy, ask anyone else what attracted them to to someone they've only been out with twice?

MargueritaBlue · 01/09/2019 21:57

I thought it was a bit nasty of Peggy. Jakob had planned going to the outdoors screening and cancelled it because now Peggy as well as Kate has lied.

BertrandRussell · 01/09/2019 22:46

I was cheering Peggy on. Kate is a complete arsehole and deserves a comeuppance. Remember she’s living rent free. And I bet Peggy pays for all the shopping too.

TheSilveryPussycat · 01/09/2019 22:52

I agree Peggy was great, up to a point. But, as Margarita says, why ruin Kate and Jakob's date?

birdsdestiny · 01/09/2019 22:57

Like previous posters, I live in a small village, the implosion of seemingly happy marriages is common, the pub was raided for drugs and one particular incident of impropriety in my village made the national news and was discussed on Loose Women This does not change the fact that TA is dire at the moment.

Fink · 01/09/2019 23:25

I don't think it is rent free. When Peggy first agreed to have her, Kate was overjoyed, and then crestfallen when Peggy immediately said something along the lines of 'Now let's discuss your rent.' I'm not aware that we've heard about it since, or any more details, but it definitely came up at the beginning - I guess we can assume that since then they've agreed an amount and Kate's paying, albeit reluctantly.

Tonnerre · 01/09/2019 23:57

I think spoiling Kate's date was fair enough. I wonder what she would have said if Jakob had asked who was coming to take over her caring responsibilities?

LizziesTwin · 02/09/2019 00:48

Whoever heard of an outdoor cinema in the daytime? Ridiculous.

Whoever heard of an outdoor cinema in the daytime? Ridiculous

Not really. When they had the big screen outside the Sheraton in Edinburgh I was at a Royal Ballet live screening when it was still daylight. My son was at a live outdoor screening of Royal Opera's Carmen in Aberdeen at the beginning of July. It's still daylight at 10 pm at that time of year.

LizziesTwin · 02/09/2019 07:03

But those are live screenings of performances and the late sunset in the north is the explanation. This is a screen set up at 2.30 when they could choose any time to start. Local open air cinema starts at 2030 next Friday night. Even the Sunday screenings at Somerset House start at 1900. Drive thru cinemas in the US start after dark.

birdsdestiny · 02/09/2019 07:49

Newcastle runs an outdoor cinema every day of the summer holidays, aimed at families obviously, but films shown at 12 and 6.

LizziesTwin · 02/09/2019 08:13

I apologize

R4 · 02/09/2019 08:25

It's obviously a weird northern thing.Grin

Whilst Peggy's torpedoing of the date was amusing. I thought she wanted Kate out of the way so that she could phone the winner of the competition and relay the good news in peace?

MargueritaBlue · 02/09/2019 08:26

Did I hear correctly that the results of the tedious conservation project are about to be announced?

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2019 08:28

I think Peggy zapping Kate was the only time I have actually laughed at the Archers. I usually find the comedy deeply, deeply unfunny.

Anyone completely unconvinced by Brookfield as a wedding venue? No? Me neither.

R4 · 02/09/2019 08:53

Anyone completely unconvinced by Brookfield as a wedding venue?
I'm really inspired by it. So inspired that I'm going to open as a wedding venue next weekend. I'm sure that I'll sort out facilities and access and parking and H&S and sufficient electricity supply and wedding licences and planning permissions and contingency plans and staff and advertising and ...

In other news if Peggy wants Ambridge to be sustainable and eco-friendly, why doesn't she put a fraction of the £500k into getting the abattoir flooring sorted and the business back up and running?

echt · 02/09/2019 09:02

Anyone completely unconvinced by Brookfield as a wedding venue?

Me for one. It seemed to spring full-armed from the Droopies' foreheads without planning of any kind.

I thought it was a bit nasty of Peggy I thought Kate was the nasty one. We know she's a leech and a crap parent as well as a world class responsibility avoider, but her lies were horrible. I've always found her annoying, but her lies make her deeply unpleasant. Peggy was right to call her on it and Kate lucky that it wasn't the full reveal.

Motoko · 02/09/2019 09:14

Yes, it could be run by the farmer's cooperative that Brian mentioned he was a member of.

I haven't listened to last night's episode yet, do we know who the winner is? Isn't there going to be a presentation? An Oscars type of event?

R4 · 02/09/2019 09:23

do we know who the winner is?
I have a horrible feeling that it's going to be Adam and he will go into full-on Soil Academy mode just when Ian wants him to be focussing on Lexi (arriving today, doncha know) and the behbeh.

Aethelthryth · 02/09/2019 09:37

TA at the moment is as bad as I have ever known it.

  • all the fner fner double entendres - Brian "I may have been a little premature"
  • the ghost of grey gables
  • the tedious, tedious climate change thing
  • Kate and Jakob

It feels as though they had a story planned which they have had to cancel and replace with stuff made up on the hoof

I want to hear about Lily: is she going back to Manchester? What's her relationship with Russ like these days?

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2019 09:50

“I thought it was a bit nasty of Peggy I thought Kate was the nasty one.“

Yep. Me too.

MikeUniformMike · 02/09/2019 10:12

I thought it Peggy was great.

Ghostontoast · 02/09/2019 11:41

I haven’t listened for a few months, has Joe passed yet?

R4 · 02/09/2019 11:50

Joe is still with us and the Grundys haven't moved out of Grange Farm yet due to a leak at No 1. Oliver is being understanding, as ever.

Ghostontoast · 02/09/2019 11:58

Thanks R4

I’m planning to have raise a glass of cider in his memory when that day comes.
