Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @QuaterMiss for the title of this thread. For reasons of space had to cut out the bit speculating about Oliver and Tracy pairing off. Surely not! Shock

Off now to give blood, something nobody in Ambridge ever does. Hmm See you all later.

Wouldn't the trust mean that it's technically not Peggy's money any more, so not subject to IHT?

It is a potentially exempt transfer . If Peggy dies within 7 years it is treated as part of her estate.

EBearhug · 04/09/2019 10:45

Also, it's meant to be funding the pize-winning project, not benefitting the winners' personal finances. Someone else could end up running the rewilding project and the money would still be there for the rewilding, and Pip or Rex or Phoebe or whoever left would be no better or worse off than before, from a financial angle.

I wonder iif Will is another public information story. If Will had a broken leg or a physical ailment the Grundys would be marching him down to the doctor/hospital forthwith and Susan would know about it in seconds.

Because his mental health is broken they try to cover it up, pretend it isn't there and lie about it. That is not uncommon and can be a disaster for the ill person.

MereDintofPandiculation · 04/09/2019 12:55

If Peggy dies within 7 years it is treated as part of her estate. So no moral reason why the other beneficiaries' portion should bear the whole tax bill. Suppose Peggy had transferred the whole of her estate to a grandchild, then had died a year later. IHT would still be payable on the estate, and presumably the grandchild would have to find the money.

So what they have done is make him as immediate an appointment as they can get with a doctor. I don't think that is covering it up; I think that is taking the first step in a very long process.

What good that appointment will do I don't quite know: what exactly is the doctor likely to be able to do, apart from prescribing tranquillisers of some sort and possibly trying (in a few weeks after more appointments) to get him an appointment to see a random specialist who may or may not be appropriate for his needs? Unlike Elizabeth, he can't pay for private treatment -- and even if he could there is absolutely no guarantee that he would be as lucky as she was in happening to get the exactly right for his problem person on the first try.

Meanwhile, Emma can say all she likes that she won't allow George to see his father, but actually he is fourteen and she can't stop him if he wants to, least of all when his father lives a couple of hundred yards away and George is not tied to a bedstead at Ambridge View 24/7. If he is anything like most fourteen year olds, being forbidden to do something will make him think it is something he wants to do, and until Susan made Will accuse him of stealing money a few weeks back, George liked Will very well and seemed to have a good time with him.

But also, Elizabeth is from a background where accepting that sort of help is okay, and she was prepared to do some work. I think Will thinks everything ihe is going through is other people's fault, and he has no control over it, so no one could help do anything which would help him manage his reactions or anything - he's not the one who needs to change. He probably thinks it's all a load of mumbo-jumbo anyway.

I don't think we entirely disagree c8. In fact I think it's safe to assume we can all agree that WIll should NOT be left with the kids. Working towards being in a place where he can have supervised visits is entirely different though. I's neither denial nor placating him, but it does provide hope, a goal and an incentive to get help. He wanted to commit suicide because he believes he's lost his kids so saying 'you definitely have forever' is ridiculous. Great point about custody Asking

I don't see why Emma can't have any empathy with Will though. I've have had to talk someone down from stabbing their self (a very long time ago) and, scary as it was, I had buckets of empathy left for my fellow man the following week.

It doesn't matter what it is for. If she pays the money over and dies within in 7 years it is still part of her estate. IHT will be calculated as if the £500,000 is still hers. It is unlikely she will survive 7 years so if the SWs know about this it has potential for much squabbling.
