Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

To be fair to Eddie, he did say ‘YOU IDIOT’ or similar when Ed revealed the reason he had been sacked.

QuaterMiss · 07/08/2019 19:18

Oh my oh my oh my!

Can I be the first to erm ... ship (Hmm) Oliver and Tracey?

FlowersWineCake

(As well as a new job for her at GG.)

Motoko · 07/08/2019 19:24

Oliver and Tracey, as a couple? No way!

But yes to her getting a job at GG.

Lil changed her tune about Oliver working at the Bull.

Someone needs to tell Susan to get her nose out of Ed and Em's marriage, especially right now, when their emotions are very raw.

BertrandRussell · 07/08/2019 20:52

My dd’s pony earned her keep doing guest appearances as a unicorn at parties. She loved doing it so much!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/08/2019 20:58

Lord lord, who knew how easy it was to find people who wanted your barn for their wedding, and found it suitable?

This is a working barn, on a working farm, at that. Complete with rats and an ill-fitting, huge door.

The idea of a wedding in the Brookfield barn was suggested on 6th June. Today we heard that the first wedding is to be next week.

So when did they get the change of use approved, planning permission (this is the mediaeval barn, even though the farm has never had one of those until a couple of editors back, and the barn at Brookfield has been burnt down twice since 1951), a floor put in, the windows installed, the electrics sorted out, and lavatories plumbed? and how did the Happy Couple know about the place when they were planning their Big Day last year some time?

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/08/2019 21:08

AskingQuestions your post is one of the reasons I love MN Archers threads

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/08/2019 21:25

I volunteer on a farm (educational purposes). After lambing is finished the plain old corrugated iron barn gets cleaned and dolled up for weddings. No special floor, no windows, no fancy door and the toilets are in the next yard. It's quite popular.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/08/2019 22:01

Toilets? Luxury! There were none for the Canterbury Tales, I seem to remember. One of the minor problems that got glossed over.

Footle · 08/08/2019 06:52

@LillianGish , tell us more about the Grave of God. Archers Apocalypse at last!

LizziesTwin · 08/08/2019 07:02

Can I listen to yesterday’s episode? I don’t want to hear more Ed & Emma upset.

Footle · 08/08/2019 07:15

There could be a group for faint-hearted fans. I'm another.

Isatis · 08/08/2019 08:24

It would be brilliant if Josh wins Piggoi's money leaving Saint Pip with egg on her face.

TeenTimesTwo · 08/08/2019 08:56

What's Josh's plan?

I'm faint hearted not due to TA but due to personal life events over the past few years which have left me with no resilience for anything stressful.

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/08/2019 09:22

What's Josh's plan?
Hybrid electric tractors.

echt · 08/08/2019 09:27

I hope Josh does win. Pip was so snide with her: "He wants all the money to himself". That would be the same PIP, who IIRC still hasn't owned up to letting the cows out.

HatingTheBigShow · 08/08/2019 09:32

teen and it won't suprise you at all to hear that Pip sneeringly dismissed it as "Josh just wants all the money for himself" - a comment completely ignored by mother-of-the-year Ruth, who wants her own plan to be solely executed by her eldest child and Brookfield saviour. What with Pip being so brilliant at foisting her unplanned child onto her ancient granny so that she could jump straight back into farm life... I really don't know why I listen to something that makes me this cross.
#teamJosh

HatingTheBigShow · 08/08/2019 09:33

echt I spot a kindred spirit!

ppeatfruit · 08/08/2019 09:38

Yes Lizzie Ed n Em were mentioned but did not speak on air.

Weddings in unromantic barns are a Thing in real life too according to a telly farming programme I saw.

I don't get why Pip seems to think that tec. is going to be popular in the future, what about the high cost to the environment of making the stuff? The committee of jugdges would be aware of that surely.

5000FlapjacksofJillArcher · 08/08/2019 09:39

Grrrrr Pip'n'Roooth. I was only half-listening while preparing dinner last night but wasn't there yet another adoring 'you are the future of Brookfield'-type utterances from the matriarch, hastily followed by a grudgingly muttered 'oh and Josh and Ben of course'?

Huh.

#Joshforthedosh (though I don't think he will get it, I think Phoebe & Rex might. That's OK, Pip's sneered at them too).

QuaterMiss · 08/08/2019 10:05

Something must be planned for Phoebe, surely? If it’s her great-grandma’s half million - well, she has the most up to date theoretical knowledge and can buy in or absorb the rest by osmosis.

I do think Oliver’s reaction to news of his protège’s loss of a house purchase was a tad underwritten. “Oh dear, what a shame, I do feel guilty. Gosh! Isn’t Tracey magnificent?” (Approx.)

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 08/08/2019 10:12

Yeah Pip was a cow of the highest order about her brother. On the subject of the Conservation Trust a couple of other things jumped out- Eddie saying that they had other things in their plate- for Grundy to pass up a potential money making opportunity things must be serious. Though Eddie has never been one for money making schemes that involved too much actual work, mind you.
And Lilian’s comment “I hope she doesn’t get too many entries because that will mean less work for me”. She really, REALLY is not the right person to be doing this job, is she?

Do we know who is actually going to decide the “winner”?

And surely there are going to be pretty stringent conditions about investing the money in the project, not just pocketing the cash? It’s being talked about at the moment like a 500k prize for writing an essay, not a commitment to implement an ambitious eco-project. (Pip’s comment about Josh is a case in point). All these people entering were up to their eyeballs with their existing jobs/businesses yet suddenly envisage having time to devote to their prizewinning scheme? Hardly.

And what about if the winning scheme turns some sort of profit? Does Peggy see any return on her investment?

It’s a load of ill-conceived bollocks.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 08/08/2019 10:12

Sorry not Conservation Trust, that’s Kirsty’s new employer. Whatever the name of Peggy’s thing is.

grumiosmum · 08/08/2019 10:15

Is the Phoebe/Rex plan focused on rewilding?

This is easily the best project. I am currently reading Isabella Tree's book about how they did this in Sussex. So inspiring. For anyone who's interested, here's an article about it. www.positive.news/environment/wild-riches-uncovering-knepp-estates-ambitious-rewilding-project/

ppeatfruit · 08/08/2019 10:25

Does she Quater ? Did she do her degree in Enironmental studies? It has never been mentioned, we don't know what her degree is in do we?

I think that Tom and gnash might win with their tree planting idea, trees are very important.

EBearhug · 08/08/2019 10:34

I thought Phoebe did PPE.
