Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

Yes.

Using money.

In society.

For the greater good of mankind.

PPE.

BloomingHydrangea · 08/08/2019 11:14

She did PPE- totally ridiculous that she was accepted as she did nothing in 6th form to give her the range of experience required. It is very competitive to get on but she sailed through the interview process.

QuaterMiss · 08/08/2019 11:19

She’d spent a school year in South Africa - and talked about (something like) ‘development policy in the post-apartheid era’ at her interview.

QuaterMiss · 08/08/2019 11:20

(But, yeah ... she certainly hasn’t shown much gumption since then.)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/08/2019 11:30

I want to hear Phoebe's degree result. I'd be very surprised indeed to hear she got anything other than a 2.1 but I still want to hear it acknowledged. Whoever said her graduation would have been a big day for the entire family is spot on.

Does "rewilding" include releasing wolves into Ambridge? Grin

timeforakinderworld · 08/08/2019 12:16

Sorry haven't read the whole thread so maybe it's already been discussed but surely Peggy's "competition" needs some rules? Family members are usually excluded from winning but they don't seem worried !

ppeatfruit · 08/08/2019 12:22

Yes of course Painting beavers and otters in the Am and Golden eagles up Lakey Hill Grin

FlossieF · 08/08/2019 13:51

Just delurking to say - Re. Phoebe's graduation, unless things have changed in the last 20 years, it is usual for Oxford graduations to be many months after finals. Mine was the following summer. She would have had her results by now though.

And I agree on the rewilding project in Sussex being v inspiring. It would be splendid if that project won. Unfortunately, the pair of them don't own any land to re-wild!

MorticiaAddamsIsMyStyleGuru · 08/08/2019 13:53

Delurkling to say I thought that the conversation between Oliver and Lillian was foreshadowing a job for Tracey at The Bull. You know, to take Oliver's job when he returns to Grey Gables.

Am I missing something?

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 08/08/2019 13:55

My Cambridge graduation was only a few weeks after I got my results. I didn’t know Oxford did it so differently.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 08/08/2019 13:57

timeforakinderworld it was only as a result of lobbying by Emma that the competition was even opened up to NON- family members!

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 08/08/2019 14:08

information about Oxford Graduation

According to this you are eligible to book a ceremony from November in your final year of study, so for Feebs from November 2018. The ceremony dates range from 13 July 2019 to 3 August (about six), then a gap and restarting around 14 September with a couple a month more or less. You can choose whatever one you want as long as your college is participating in that one and you can choose to graduate many years later if you want. However I’d imagine that in practice it’s most common for students to book the first one available after results as most want to graduate along with all their friends. That’s what we did.

Short answer: Phoebe could still have an on-air graduation.

QuaterMiss · 08/08/2019 14:24

I’d imagine that when the SWs do get round to it they’ll use Hayley (and perhaps the rest of Phoebe’s Birmingham-based family) as a reason for the delay. And/or poor Phoebe tying herself in knots over who to give her guest tickets to.

But it would make a lovely episode to have Hayley, Abby, Mike, Vicky, Bethany, Brenda all in Oxford for graduation day (even if silent) along with Roy and the Aldridge contingent. (Yes, I do know they wouldn’t all be able to attend the ceremony, but I assume Oxford is as capable of live-streaming as any other university.)

FlossieF · 08/08/2019 14:50

Apparently there is indeed live-streaming of the ceremony, which is remarkably modern considering it is still conducted entirely in Latin!

MrsGrindah · 08/08/2019 15:01

My moneys on Ruth and Pip bagging the Peggy award. You know, the marvellous Pip who’s done such an amazing job actually having a child.

R4 · 08/08/2019 15:23

Despite Emma's intervention, I think Peggy's money will be won by a family member. I feel that Shula's competition being won by One Of Us (Freddie) was a foreshadowing.

QuaterMiss · 08/08/2019 16:39

Morticia that would seem a potentially obvious development - but I had the impression Oliver was sufficiently impressed to want her working at GG.

And wouldn’t that be more fun? After all Horrobins and (by extension) Grundys are two a penny at the pub. Far more interesting to mix things up by taking Horrobins to the smart hotel ...

Taswama · 08/08/2019 17:37

Thanks @grumiosmum for a really interesting read. I’d not heard of it before.

MorticiaAddamsIsMyStyleGuru · 08/08/2019 17:59

QuaterMiss
I have to agree Tracey would make a very interesting addition to the GG staff. In particular, Tracey and Linda (Lynda not sure which spelling is correct ☺️) interactions should be comedy gold. I can't imagine Roy being to thrilled about it either 😳😄

grumiosmum · 08/08/2019 18:13

You're welcome Taswama

Madcats · 08/08/2019 19:14

Whatever happened to Kathy Perks? Didn't she move from the golf club to be the demi-god of towels and toiletries at GG?

MikeUniformMike · 08/08/2019 19:26

Kathy has been too busy at GG and her Ka-Per towel folding blog to visit Pat for years.

LadyRannaldini · 08/08/2019 20:04

I want to hear Tracey on Reception dealing with a stroppy dissatisfied customer!

echt · 08/08/2019 21:33

Kate's high dudgeon was amusing, after all, she did make the free offer of the massage to get on Jakob's good side, so sexual intent was a motive. I wonder if this spectacular clash between Jakob and Kate will result in some Mills and Boon-ish reversal further down the track.

What I also noticed was her mean-spirited jibe at Christine's popularity at the Laurels: only because of the food goodies she got.
What with Pip's stab at Josh in the last episode, that's two women who are just plain pettily unpleasant. No men are like this.
