Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

Many farmers view horses as an expensive nuisance that use good pasture and earn no money.

Ahh Lex Freddie will be right at home.

InkySplatter · 14/08/2019 19:12

Although obviously it was his desire to earn money that led him astray Confused

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/08/2019 19:21

traditional fox hunt in the shires could well be out twice a week an actual fox hunt would be illegal though.

Poppy will be fine, not so sure about Joe. I knew someone whose mother, only in her 50s, died after contracting chicken pox from her grandchildren.

MrsGrindah · 14/08/2019 19:24

I’m getting really fed up with Will. I know he’s had a dreadful loss but almost every scene he’s in he mentions something about putting the kids first, or doing right by them, or he’s letting them down etc. in that drawl of his. His actions towards them contradict this though eg taking Poppy out on an evening, being mean to Mia etc.

hanahsaunt · 14/08/2019 19:26

CofE has some nuns. Pretty sure that there is an upper age limit of 50 to start ordination training though. Isn't Shula over 60? She could be ordained as a distinctive deacon from being a Reader.

ppeatfruit · 14/08/2019 20:54

Why would we need another dramatic scene with poppy in hospital with suspected sepsis? I know Will is now paranoid about it, understandably. But purleeese S.W's give us a break from Jim's problems, stuff breaking in the dairy etc etc. etc.......

Fink · 14/08/2019 21:06

I think the point of the A&E scene, ppeat was that Poppy absolutely does not have sepsis, but Will sees it everywhere.

I thought the dairy scenes were well done. Mutual stubborness, especially from Susan (acting like a toddler but totally in character for her in that situation), turned to concern when a real problem came up. BOOP for that - unless Susan hears that it was all over nothing and loses patience with Clarrie even further.

MikeUniformMike · 14/08/2019 21:08

Nah, I think Poppy will be babysat by Joe tomorrow...

In the meantime, how are things with Russ'n'Lils, Tom and Batasha etc

ppeatfruit · 14/08/2019 21:09

Yes I know Fink It's all just too much in one episode. In one or 2 weeks it would've been enough.

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/08/2019 21:25

She could be ordained as a distinctive deacon as opposed to a nondescipt one?

Fink · 14/08/2019 21:51

I just meant that I didn't take it as a seriously miserable sl (as opposed to the scenes with Jim), because it was so obvious there was nothing really wrong with Poppy. It was more of a chance for Clarrie and Susan to show some sympathy/ fellow feeling than it was any further sadness in the lives of the already downtrodden.

MollyButton · 14/08/2019 21:56

Age seems to depend on your Diocese according to this Church Times article. With more rural areas being the most generous. But older people are likely to be directed to local part time training and Self Supporting Ministry, older people seem to be more likely to be accepted in more Rural areas too.

Minimammoth · 14/08/2019 22:18

Anyone thinking Tracy and Oliver.........

ADarkandStormyKnight · 14/08/2019 22:26

Anyone thinking Tracy and Oliver.........

No... just no.

Tracey and Roy after they have learned to appreciate each other through the medium of Lynda.

Phoebe and Rex... they could be a match. Both have dysfunctional, crazy families.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 14/08/2019 23:54

Wasn’t Spearmint a horse rather than a pony? I seem to recall that Alice pestered Brian for an upgrade from whatever her pony was called (did it not end up with laminitis or something?) to a proper showjumper type horse.

I can’t scroll back to check, did you also remember Cranford Crystal? She is still with us isn’t she, it was Topper who kicked the bucket.

LizziesTwin · 15/08/2019 05:43

I really hope Phoebe doesn’t fall for Rex, he’s much too old for her.

MikeUniformMike · 15/08/2019 07:47

He is, and Spearmint is/was a horse not a pony.
Not sure about Tracey and Oliver... he deserves happiness and she's lively, and Susan would have an opinion but it seems an unlikely pairing.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2019 08:06

Hello all, were there any suggestions for next thread title? I'm going to be in and out today but unless there's a sudden surge of posting we should be good till the end of the afternoon, I'd have thought.

I think horses appear in the Archers all the time - I definitely get the impression it's a very horsey place to live.

QuaterMiss · 15/08/2019 08:14

Only mine yesterday, Gasp0. (I’d hoped it would spur people on ...)

EBearhug · 15/08/2019 08:24

I thought Spearmint had had to be put down a few years ago and Alice was upset, despite not having ridden much recently. But I might be imagining that.

What about Debbie's Tolly? He stayed in Ambridge when she went to Hungary.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2019 08:26

Thanks, QuaterMiss, I missed that.

If Tolly's still alive he must be an equine marvel.
