Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks to @MrsGrindah for inspiration for the title of this thread. I was hoping to find a way to combine it with @C8H10N4O2's inspired suggestion of '"The Assumption of the Ambridge Angel' and @chemenger's comment 'I hope she gets kicked in the head by a horse and wakes up an atheist', but it all got a bit too lengthy.

Odds on Joe shuffling off this mortal coil before this thread ends? We've been marking/anticipating his passing for a while now.

Was Jazzer talking about Star Wars/Rogue One, then, R4? I've seen that but didn't recognise the quote, had to Google it!

Why is Adam doing the heavy-duty sighing and "I told you sos" at the prospect of the likes of Terry Button and others putting in bids? Yes, opening up the competition to everyone will attract time-wasters, but it affects him personally not one jot.

R4 · 26/07/2019 11:39

Was Jazzer talking about Star Wars/Rogue One, then, R4?
It was Jim that did the quotation!
I am being presumptuous blaming Jazzer. I suppose it could have been Al. Or Jim's own research for pub-quiz purposes.

R4 · 26/07/2019 11:42

my money is on Grundy and Adam project
Good shout. Lots of potential for 'hilarious' misunderstandings and differences in approach.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/07/2019 12:25

Yes, that's what I meant, Jazzer talking to Jim. I don't remember that, but I agree it's the most likely reason for Jim to know that phrase.

Re Mr Button being a mycologist - yes, I seem to recall that when he was first mentioned ages ago he was described as the Borsetshire Fungal Recorder, or something like that. I can't believe that's a full-time job.

Is the helpline for abuse survivors, or is it for people who need help to cope with the SL?

ErrolTheDragon · 26/07/2019 13:14

It's where the Button girls get their joie de vivre from, their dad being such a fun guy.

(Sorry, someone had to. )

I'll never look at a tray of button mushrooms in the same way again.

TheSilveryPussycat · 26/07/2019 13:37

Mentioned Peggy's Trust to my accountant, and had a look on line. AIUI it can't be a charitable trust, because a charitably trust's recipients can't be restricted to family. Unless Peggy has changed it when she opened it to the village.

A non-charitable trust would have consequences for IHT, which I might attempt to explain in another post - I think it makes it unfairto Peggy's beneficiaries when she dies. (I am not an expert, but think I know enough to try to explain, a relative of mine and I got to grips with it as her mother had money.)

TheSilveryPussycat · 26/07/2019 13:39

A charitable trust would also be subject to Inheritance Tax, but the rules are complex and are well beyond my understanding.

chemenger · 26/07/2019 15:24

I just want to express my joy at an episode with no Shula and with added Lynda and Robert.

Motoko · 26/07/2019 15:45

Yes, me too echt! Also, Lynda and Robert were good.

Motoko · 26/07/2019 15:46

Sorry chem I meant you. I'd just read a post by echt on the spoilers thread, and got your names mixed up. Oops!

QuaterMiss · 26/07/2019 19:16

Damn and blast! Sad

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 26/07/2019 19:20

Poor Ed... Yes, he's been an idiot but BLOODY Will. He is an utterly insufferable git - I hate him!

Abraid2 · 26/07/2019 19:21

I was gasping out loud.

R4 · 26/07/2019 19:23

Ed is such an easily-led numpty. Will he never learn. Even my patience is exhausted.Sad

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/07/2019 19:24

Doom! Dooooom unto the House of Grundy!

No doubt Ed will now try to kill Will

MikeUniformMike · 26/07/2019 19:28

No. Ed will try to sell the weedkiller.
Where will MiaNed live now?

Fink · 26/07/2019 19:38

I won't hold my breath waiting for Emma to take her share of the blame for convincing Ed to work with Tim in the beginning when he wanted to avoid anything dodgy but she was all for it.

R4 · 26/07/2019 19:40

How will this tie into Joe's story? Will he go to his grave thinking Ed is a self-sabotaging idiot.

Limer · 26/07/2019 19:48

For the first time in about a year I listened live to tonight's episode, I just knew something awful was going to happen Sad

Ed's well and truly up the creek without a paddle. I guess the best scenario is if he voluntarily goes to the police, Tim gets arrested and Ed gets off with a lesser charge (would either of them go to prison though? Or just caution/fine?), then Adam does a Good Samaritan act and lets Ed keep his job (or resume it after prison?). However you look at it, the new house purchase looks scuppered.

And ginger wine is definitely just a Christmas drink, although it is delicious any time of year!

Motoko · 26/07/2019 20:48

Emma is totally to blame for Ed's predicament, but she'll be laying into him as if it's all his fault

Word will get round that Adam sacked Ed, which will make getting another job in Ambridge, difficult, if not impossible.

And bloody Will! He's such a volatile knuckle dragger. He's nothing but trouble. If I was Ed, I'd be tempted to tell Bev about him taking Poppy out at night.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/07/2019 22:01

Will is going to catch it in the neck from everyone for Ed's petty criminality being discovered and getting Ed into trouble, and he will deserve it for going and having a confrontation with Ed at Ed's work.

What a numpty Ed was, though, to fuel Will's (understandable) anger about Ed lying to him repeatedly, by telling Will that George had been in a car which had been tail-ended. The way he did it made it sound as if it was to do with Tim Oatey, and Ed knew it was nothing to do with Tim so he ought simply to have not said anything about it. It was only after he thought Ed's stupidity had put his son at risk that Will really went ballistic.

LassOfFyvie · 26/07/2019 22:09

Poor Ed... Yes, he's been an idiot but BLOODY Will. He is an utterly insufferable git - I hate him!

I think Will was justified in being angry. Although it was not helpful obviously going round to Home Farm.

But it's a horrible storyline.
