Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads and @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit and more recently when someone forgot they had promised to start the next thread, ahem.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to be Susan's best friend or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from this thread, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Archers Thanks also to LillianGish for the splendid thread title. As actor Edward Kelsey died last month, we have probably heard Joe Grundy for the last time, or will do very shortly. Sad RIP Mr Kelsey; many thanks for creating a wonderfully vivid character, gnarly toenails and all.

As pointed out on the last thread, we're getting very close now to the 100th birthday of June Spencer, who plays Peggy Woolley. What an achievement! I hope the team manage to squeeze Peggy into that day's episode, come what may.

Does anyone else think of coconut shells being tapped against each other like you used to do in school music lessons whenever we hear horses' hooves at the stables? The sound is so fake, to me.

I thought the reason Camilla's shoes were polka dot was because they'd been splashed by the soup that Elizabeth had dropped.

I'm going to be so cross when/if Ed'n'Emmur don't get/lose the house, for whatever reason. Emmur first told Ed not to get involved with Tomotei and his shady deals, but that changed when she lost her cleaning job. That's also so out of character for Peggy. She's always been a kind, fair employer for Emmur.

Freddie is slowly coming to the realisation that much of what has happened to him has been caused by his own, thoughtless actions.

What's happening about CMR repaying the bailiff?

Phew, that's better, getting some of my frustrations off my chest. My family are not Archers fans!

GeorgeTheBleeder · 22/05/2019 17:48

I’m ashamed to say that, despite going on a TA studio tour at BBC Birmingham a few years ago, I have absolutely no memory of how they said they produce the sound of hooves. I’ll have to go again.

birdsdestiny · 22/05/2019 17:50

It's possible about Alan. I thought he was so odd when talking to Shula that the writers must have been trying to imply something. We also have just had a vicar scandal in my area so it may be quite common.

Fink · 22/05/2019 18:00

I hope Usha has run off with someone else (though given the amount of time we haven't heard her for, more likely to be Rob than Natasha), but only temporarily because I like her and want her back. The reason I hope something is up is because a family crisis might prompt the return of the wonderful Amy, a character I really liked, and, if we're really lucky, Usha's Aunty Satya (or did she die?).

Aethelthryth · 22/05/2019 18:02

Camilla was absurd- nobody is that rude.

Shula a priest? I know the C of E is bit drippy; but will no-one question her instigating a divorce simply because she was a bit bored?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/05/2019 18:02

(mostly to shut up "I only have half-shares in a stately home to leave them will nobody think about the children!" Elizabeth, back in 2001)

Neither Elizabeth nor Lily own a penny of LL and they never will. Its entailed to Freddy who has trustees until he is of age.

This was not the case in 2001, and Elizabeth did not know it was going to be the case or she'd have been shouting about that too.

chatnicknameyousuggested · 22/05/2019 18:13

Any reckon that Tash is shacked up with Trev? Am sure Tom will drive to Wales and find her not at her parents.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/05/2019 18:33

Camilla was absurd- nobody is that rude.

I don't know, I've a relative who could give her a run for her money. She was a bit contrived über posh I'll agree. But good to hear a proper actress wrangling with the script.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/05/2019 18:35

Sorry, by proper I mean recognisable and with a wealth of experience. No offence to other cast members intended.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/05/2019 19:18

The 🔮 is discusted!

It says no clairvoyance is required to know that EdNEmmur's plans for their new home is doooooooooomed!

GeorgeTheBleeder · 22/05/2019 19:21

The SWs are just being evil now. Sad

LassOfFyvie · 22/05/2019 19:40

Neither Elizabeth nor Lily own a penny of LL and they never will. Its entailed to Freddy who has trustees until he is of age

If anything happened to Freddy and the estate passed to a cousin or similar they would have no rights to it

I don't think we have the slightest idea what the terms of the trust which holds LL says. Is it even an entail? I'm not qualified in English law but Scots law doesn't even have entails now and my understanding is they are becoming rarer in England.

I think it is , in reality, now unlikely LL would go to a cousin Pride and Prejudice style.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 22/05/2019 19:48

With regard to sound effects, I came across this yesterday, on a completely unrelated forum.

Interesting stuff, I think.

So Brine and JD are staying at Willow Cottage for a year. Will they buy Grange Farm?

GeorgeTheBleeder · 22/05/2019 20:03

Who knows? Looks as if the new Editor is carving out some space to think through the plots he has inherited. In addition to finding a way to incorporate Joe’s demise.

Fink · 22/05/2019 21:15

Tracy has some great lines: 'It's about more than winning, blah blah blah. That's probably what Eddie the Eagle said!' Grin

LassOfFyvie · 22/05/2019 21:28

Emma was shrewishly unpleasant tonight.

DadDadDad · 22/05/2019 21:33

Lass - I agree, it wasn't just a tone of annoyance, but a more spiteful edge particularly when Jazzer was the topic of discussion.

R4 · 22/05/2019 23:11

Despite looking for bunting, Harrison didn't spot it when it was right in front of him. I hope that nobody points out that Me'n'Ed are suddenly loaded - flashing the cash in front of Jazzer, buying presents, putting down a deposit on a sofa - and H starts to engage the little grey cells.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 23/05/2019 00:26

What's Emmur's beef with Jazzer?

I must have missed something Hmm

Acis · 23/05/2019 00:58

I think it's basically that Ed feels guilty about letting Jazzer down, and he shouldn't because he needs to prioritise making loadsamoney with Timotei. She's normally not that dim, but I suppose it's just about in character on the basis that she's blinded by her focus on saving as much as possible towards the new house.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 23/05/2019 01:53

She has 4,002 reasons.

  1. As above - she needs to get between Ed and any feelings of loyalty he might have towards Jazzer.

  2. Matriarchal pride - Jazzer disrespected her man.

  3. The 4,000 effortlessly acquired ££ that Jazzer has magically tumbled into without having to eviscerate a single chicken - when he has no other mouths to feed, and no our-own-house deposit to pay.

EBearhug · 23/05/2019 02:14

About a million years ago, didn't Tim, Siobhan's husband, have an affair with Janet the vicar? Or am I confusing them with Shula and Richard the doctor?

Dumdedumdedum · 23/05/2019 04:41

I think Tim and Janet went off together after Siobhan had had Ruairidigger, EBearhug? Oh, look, found this! You're right!
"When Brian met Siobhan...
Siobhan and her (then) husband Tim arrived in Ambridge in 1999, having fallen in love with Honeysuckle Cottage which, she felt, was an ideal rural home. Village life was not as perfect as she'd hoped however, as she discovered when gossipmongers quickly spread the news that she'd had a miscarriage.
A new publishing job provided a certain amount of distraction from her loss; but it meant frequent travel overseas. And while away, if those same gossipmongers are to be believed, her husband got overly friendly with Janet Fisher (the vicar). Her marriage to Tim was doomed: while he would eventually marry Janet, Siobhan and Brian began their affair."
