Zoe Ball on Radio 2

I haven’t heard a lot so apologies if my perceptions seem wrong.. When I’ve heard her, she reminds me of a contestant on Just a Minute: she has to unnaturally stretch some of her words and comments to fill the time she has. I’ve also never heard her say a word of anything she appears to have thought herself. She laughs, she introduces guests and asks them questions, but nothing seems to come from her.
She reminds me of Ant and Dec: proficient in their field but of no more interest than that.

I quite like Sara Cox for the fact that you get a sense of her.

All of the above said, I can’t deny that it’s admirable for anyone to hold together a programme professionally and obviously that’s a skill she has.

I’d love to know if anyone disagrees with me.

I quite like Zoe Ball. Also like Sara Cox and Rylan.

Loving Gary Davies on the radio. He should replace Steve Wright.

BishopBrennansArse · 11/05/2019 18:13

I went to Virgin with Chris, too. I don't listen to r2 at all now it just stays on Virgin all day.

TroysMammy · 11/05/2019 18:17

I set my radio for 6.30am as a back up to the alarm on my phone. I jump out of bed to switch it off because I cannot abide ZB's insipid, gushing good mornings. Luckily my radio in the car doesn't work so I don't hear anymore of her show. I can't really comment if it's shit or not.

Gingernaut · 11/05/2019 18:19

Can't stick Rylan though.

youlladdressmeassir · 11/05/2019 18:24

I've moved to radio scotland until 9.30 and Sir Ken comes on.

I can't deal with Zoe's garbled, top speed delivery, her "gorgeous girl crap, her sharp intakes of breath while she speaks.

I've had to switch off Sara cox too. Boring drivel. Even she sounds bored with that phrased And confused rubbish. And she never stops sniffing. So annoying

OfflineFor40Years · 11/05/2019 19:43

Radio 2 has almost completely disappeared from my listening habit. Chris E was starting to drive me mad before he left due to his growing egomania and lack of respect for any music he played by talking over it.

I was rooting for Zoe but it's all so uninteresting and shallow. We have returned to R4 in the house for breakfast, DH listens to Virgin in his car and I listen to podcasts or music loaded onto SD cards on the days I commute.

I've followed Simon Mayo to Scala for the mid morning slot as it's pretty much perfect to work to, and he's just such a lovely presenter. He's still got Confessions, classical Muppets on Friday and Nigel on a Saturday too.

Gingernaut · 12/05/2019 00:49

Currently listening to Alex Lester on BBC WM.

God I miss live shows overnight.

OJ Borg isn't cutting it.

RomaineCalm · 12/05/2019 01:11

I've followed CE breakfast to Virgin. Yes, he gets on my wires sometimes when he gets obsessed with a particular topic but generally I find him entertaining and upbeat. The Virgin playlist is pretty repetitive though if you listen all day.

I have Radio 2 on my alarm and ZB is terrible in the morning. I think she's lovely and I wanted to like her but it's like 'white noise' and the 'show and tell' is truly awful. I didn't mind the 'what are you doing for the first time today' slot with Chris but I don't need to hear a 6 year old playing the bagpipes or reciting Chinese at 7:40am.

It's a shame. I love radio but I channel hop all over the place these days.

TheInvisibleMrsCrane · 13/05/2019 06:19

I thought I’d love Zoe Ball, but she drives me mad with the wittering, too long sentences and the sharp intake of breath at the end as she needs to breathe (listen out for it - you’ll never be able to un-notice it).

I’ve never liked Sarah Cox - sounds like somebody trying to be 20 years younger and I find it quite pathetic.

The music of Craig Charles is dreadful.,

I don’t like commercial radio, but tempted to give Virgin a go.

floribunda18 · 13/05/2019 06:33

Zoe Ball is about the only person I've ever been able to stomach listening to on the Radio 1 or Radio 2 breakfast show, I CANNOT FUCKING STAND Chris Evans. I like Graham Norton, Sara Cox, Dermot O' Leary and Rylan Clark on Radio 2. In the fact the only DJ I really don't like on there now is Steve Wright. He needs to shuffle off to BBC Norwich or somesuch with his tired old schtick.

NomDeQwerty · 13/05/2019 06:41

I've stopped listening to R2 after decades of having it on in the car. Sara Cox would have been better

ShirleyAvenue · 13/05/2019 06:44

I think ZB is probably doing what is asked of her on the Breakfast Show- energetic, slightly chaotic, family 'fun'...
She's fine- professional, competent, but not that interesting, inventive or funny. It's inoffensive. I have it on in the background.
But agree about Show &Tell. I mean, really, who is interested in strangers' children showing off??? Zoe does have really nice interaction with the kids but it is an awful feature which needs to be axed.
Also who is that name dropping wannabe man? He's supposed to do the weather or the sport or the travel (?) but they are trying to build up his role into a co-presenter. He needs to stay in his weather/ travel/ sport box because he just goes on and on and on.

OldGrinch · 13/05/2019 06:49

Sara is better that Zoe but agree with pp that she plays dreadful music. I have followed Chris to Virgin and never listen to Radio 2 anymore which is a bit of a shame. I used to quite like the guy that came on after Chris, Ken something? He was quite funny (misses point of thread)

FabulouslyFab · 13/05/2019 06:51

I’ve also moved to Radio 4 or Radio 4 extra for my commute. Radio 2 at home on Saturday. Sunday is generally my own music.

VirginiaWolfHall · 13/05/2019 06:57

I couldn’t stand Zoe back in 1999 and I still can’t stand her now. I’m sure she’s a lovely person in real life n all but as a dj host she has always come across as inauthentic and self obsessed to me. I also find something about her VERY unrelaxing to listen to - she puts me on edge.

UserAlice · 13/05/2019 06:58

On a thread about R2 presenters how has no one mentioned Jeremy Vine?! Can’t stand his slot at all. We have R2 on all day at work and we all groan at his slot.

At the age of 29 I feel I’ve outgrown R1 (although prefer Greg James to ZB at breakfast) but cannot fully commit to R2 yet because it some of the shows are so dull (although I love the music). Often listen to Sarah Cox on the way home as I can’t stand Nick Grimshaw’s show on R1.

TemporaryPermanent · 13/05/2019 07:02

I'm enjoying being in the arms of Petroc Trelawney on R3 - never too much and only the occasional weird radio phrasing. I missed Sean K on R6, I used to have to put stuff down as I was laughing so much listening to him.

It's the music that is so dull with ZB and SC, that can't be what they want to play?? I used to like them both esp SC because they sounded like my sardonic self deprecating mates, but the spoonful of sugar required for R2, that quite suited CE at first, just wasn't needed for them IMO. I wish they could be more themselves and less focused on building some bloody brand.

Also got pissed off with SC's promotional interviews about her 'professional wilderness' years when she was, erm, on national radio. Stop with the drama.

holibab · 13/05/2019 07:19

I can't bear ZB. I was gutted when they gave her the show and even gave her a chance but it's awful.

I don't mind Sara Cox but am rarely able to listen at that time anyway.

Love Rylan because I just love him as a person. So funny.

I now only tune in for Ken if I'm on my way to a work visit at that time and Jeremy Vine- topic depending.

I go for Radio 6 mostly now but my car's DAB is crap so that's mainly at home.

ZB should go!

tomtom1999xx · 13/05/2019 07:25

The show & tell slot is so painful. I was hoping when Chris Evans left the kids would leave too......but no.
I also find ZB calling everyone ‘darling’ and ‘gorgeous’ a bit annoying.

Ken Bruce is the only quality DJ on R2. Although I must admit, I do like Steve Wright.

Popetthetreehugger · 13/05/2019 07:47

The last straw in our house was a loose woman talking about a book she’d written about the menopause, even as a menopausal woman I wasn’t interested! So followed Chris to virgin . Down side , the rest of the following shows are dross . Will now investigate scalla to find the fantastic mr Mayo 👍

GinisLife · 13/05/2019 08:04

I've barely listened to radio at all let alone Radio 2 since the beginning of December for reasons that aren't relevant but coincides with all the changes that went on. Now that I'm back listening I've moved to Virgin with Chris Evans and it tends to stay there (I only listen in the car). I do sometimes move it back to Sara Cox. I used to listen to Radio 2 all day every day when working from home so it's a huge change for me. Lewis Carrie needs sacking. He's trashed Radio 2.

Gingernaut · 13/05/2019 09:00

The ladies at work have found Greatest Hits Radio.

Here, in the West Midlands, Absolute Radio was on FM, but this changed early this year.

Greatest Hits is now on FM where Absolute used to be and it's also got its own DAB station.

It's like the old Radio 2 playlist, playing pop music from 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

Run by Bauer, who own KISS, Scala, Absolute and Magic.

Also home to Mark Goodier.

BertsFriend · 13/05/2019 10:31

I like Zoe but can't stand the show's format, if she could just play music she likes and be herself it'd be good. Great that CE and his massive ego is gone, I couldn't listen to him.
I think Sara Cox is really funny, I try to catch it when I can but agree the music's not great. I also like Steve Wright's show (bit controversial here), and Ken Bruce. And I much prefer Vanessa to Jeremy and his ridiculous faux sincerity that's not fooling anyone. I also suspect Jeremy's a bit dim but his accent disguises it.

youllhavehadyourtea · 13/05/2019 13:26

I tend to agree.

Radio 2 was our station of choice at home and in the car ( I had been introduced to it by the builders who were building our extention 15 years ago, they wouldnt listen to anything else, because the music was good.) -

I liked it, my teenagers liked it. Granny listened to it at her house too . So it encompassed all generations and both sexes.

None of us listen to it now.

Currently got Scala Radio on in the kitchen, but I dot about now. Used to be hard tuned to Radio 2. I'd like it back!

blackleggingsandatshirt · 13/05/2019 13:30

Love Sarah Cox - and I've switched to VIrgin to listen to Chris Evans - Zoe Ball far too gushing and false for me
