I’m not surprised Clarrie wants to avoid drug dealer Freddie given what happened to Ed. But she’d just heard from a gleeful Emma how Ed would be moving his shearing work for the money from Tim, which has dodgy written all over it even if you’re an apparent innocent like Emma.

Clarrie shunning Freddy (though happily accepting Lizzie letting them all into LL for free) while Ed indulges in fencing stolen goods with the potential for violence shows that she won’t be sitting in moral judgement for long.

ppeatfruit · 13/05/2019 10:38

Also she's being stupid because IME most, if not all, secondary schools have their 'druggie' groups. So to keep George away from 'harmful' influences she'd have to home educate him and make sure he never went out. Grin

ADarkandStormyKnight · 13/05/2019 10:40

I thought Clarrie sounded worried about the shearing. Generally she has good instincts.

R4 · 13/05/2019 10:40

Ed indulges in fencing stolen goods
I don't think that they are stolen, are they? I thought it was dangerous materials being disposed of in a non-COSHH way, reminiscent of what Brine did 40 years ago.

thislido · 13/05/2019 10:45

I think the point is we don’t really know because Ed doesn’t really know. They could be stolen, smuggled, or not properly controlled, or packed with drugs.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 13/05/2019 10:47

There is a very heavy handed pun in 'fencing' which would suggest stolen goods. Tim has lured Ed in by trivialising the crime and making it seem victimless - a bit of red tape avoidance. No-harm-done kind of thing.

R4 · 13/05/2019 10:51

It is so uncharacteristic of the SW to be hazy with details.

thislido · 13/05/2019 10:51

Maybe George can get involved in county lines dealing soon, he must be getting to that age.

R4 · 13/05/2019 10:58

I hadn't spotted that one!
See, the one time they insert nuance/detail it goes right over my head.Grin

EBearhug · 13/05/2019 13:16

does the cider club have a licence?

No - wasn't there some storyline about why they had to set up as a club, to get round the licensing issue? (Because Eddy & Joe would never just give the cider away, when there's a chance of making money.)

BertrandRussell · 13/05/2019 13:24

Ed’s going to dump Jazzer in it about the shearing, isn’t he?

Taswama · 13/05/2019 14:45

I flagged up the double meaning of ‘fencing’ last thread or before.

R4 · 13/05/2019 15:03

Did you? Apols. I know how annoying it is when someone else gets a mention, and you don't, for saying exactly the same thing.
I really am slacking on my attention to detail.Blush

LillianGish · 13/05/2019 17:03

There is a very heavy handed pun in 'fencing' which would suggest stolen goods. I cannot believe I missed Taswama's reference to this in the previous thread - apologies. An excellent observation all round - surely worthy of mention in the next thread title Who's performing acts of pennants for the stolen bunting and what form does Timotei's fencing take (and will any of the stolen bunting turn up on said fence)?

R4 · 13/05/2019 17:25

and will any of the stolen bunting turn up on said fence?
That reminds me of the Cardrona Bra Fence. Hope we don't get a Cecil Jackson's Undercrackers FenceShock

KingscoteStaff · 13/05/2019 17:26

I thought the appearance of the singular bunting (bunt?) would be accompanied by a ransom note.

BertrandRussell · 13/05/2019 17:27

Surely a “bunt” is a grown up bunting?

thislido · 13/05/2019 17:54

Thanks R4, what wonderful Wikipedia article.

"Despite its popularity, there was disagreement over the value of the attraction."

"Some locals claimed that a number of Japanese students who are being educated in nearby Wanaka could get offended by the fence, as well as many other Asians or South Africans."

What an odd selection of nationalities apparently offended by bras.

thislido · 13/05/2019 17:57

I like that idea Bert but wouldn't it have to be buntling?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/05/2019 18:39

If Clarrie is upset at the idea of George being influenced by a criminal, home-schooling to avoid drugs at school won't help. She ought to keep him clear of Eddie even more than Ed, whose convictions were years ago.

It wasn't Ed who was teaching eleven-year-old George how to poach in 2016!

ADarkandStormyKnight · 13/05/2019 18:47

Its an interesting reflection on how we see crime depending on our upbringing and values. A bit of tax avoidance, a bit of poaching, going a few miles per hour over the limit, taking recreational drugs on the weekend, using the office photocopier... Most of us have 'grey areas' somewhere.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/05/2019 19:17

Oh dear

I seem to have something in my eye...

MikeUniformMike · 13/05/2019 19:29

I don't Bore but hearing his voice startled me.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/05/2019 19:34

It sounded very much like preparing for the end but it was really him wasn't it? Quite spooky.

GeorgeTheBleeder · 13/05/2019 19:47

But it sounded as if the SW was foreshadowing Clarrie’s end! Confused
