Tracey'd end up killing Will !! I don't reckon anyone's chances married to her.

Then we must keep planting it as an idea in the SWs’ minds.

Archers

Commiserations, ANutAsBigAsABoulder and thislido, but @lillypainter just made the 100,000th post!!!

Archers

I hope that's not too much of an anti-climax for everyone. But the real celebration is for the 99,999 posts that got us here. Thanks, everyone!

#############

The thing about Russ's gaffer tapes is that I found his explanation about boundaries quite interesting - if it had been someone talking like that on Front Row, I wouldn't have found it out of place.

🎉🎉🎉 to LilyPainter for tipping us into the big number!

@DDD, I could imagine Will Gompertz sagely nodding along as Russ spoke his arty waffle 😄

thislido · 08/05/2019 13:38

Congratulations everyone, especially the long term posters!

I thought the art sounded fine, but I like conceptual art (and figurative art).

DadDadDad · 08/05/2019 13:49

See attached if you want to check my working. Note that post counts were correct at the time that discussion ended on that thread - comments added later or just to fill up the thread have been excluded.

Gosh, Helen's persistent, isn't she Shock

And did Shula say 'strewth?' Why, I wonder?

R4 · 08/05/2019 14:27

How nice that the 100,000 post was one poster thanking another for their helpfulness and knowledge regarding these threads.Smile

MereDintofPandiculation · 08/05/2019 14:29

And did Shula say 'strewth?' Why, I wonder? Why not? It's something I remember from a childhood near Ambridge. It's something I think of as quintessentially Borsetshire. Never heard it anywhere else. Though admittedly from Jill's generation rather than Shula's.

ppeatfruit · 08/05/2019 14:31

lido Why would anyone travel from Bristol for an installation that says What? Whatever you want it to say, duh. I could read a newspaper or listen to the media to get it. It says nothing new or clever about the exit subject.

Russ is a bigger bullshitter than I took him for . And Lizzie is more of an idiot too. Kenton has him nailed.

GabrielleNelson · 08/05/2019 14:32

Hurrah! Well done, Lily. (Not a phrase one will often hear on this thread! Grin) Flowers Glitterball

Well done also to DDD for being our resident statistician! Star

ppeatfruit · 08/05/2019 14:35

Isn't 'strewth' a 'polite' way of saying "God's truth"? I may be wrong, it's like 'blimey' is asking god to blind you.

thislido · 08/05/2019 14:42

ppeat I actually just meant that I thought the art itself sounded fine rather than the entire situation was credible, but Bristol to the Ambridge area is about hour’s journey by car, mostly straight up the M5. I’ve made much longer journeys to exhibitions if they’ve caught my eye - simply because I like that kind of thing. I don’t know what thoughts or feelings they will provoke before I get there, that’s part of the point for me, the unexpected element.

It doesn’t sound like it would be for you, but you weren’t on Russ’s guest list Grin As for it saying nothing new or clever, Shula seemed to surprise herself by getting something from it.

DadDadDad · 08/05/2019 14:47

Remember that CMR was an experienced A level teacher. He can be a creepy bastard and knowledgeable about art at the same. Smile

Aaah you are a Damien Hirst lover are you? Well all to their own. What I really dislike are the billionaires spending huge amounts of money while the world is going down the swanny. They could be buying and saving rainforests ! Sorry I'm in a bit of a bad mood this afternoon Grin.

birdsdestiny · 08/05/2019 14:53

Boundaries aren't really his forte though.

ppeatfruit · 08/05/2019 14:59

Dad Art is subjective, if EVERYTHING is art then NOTHING is art, is it?

GeorgeTheBleeder · 08/05/2019 15:00

Boundaries aren't really his forte though.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

ppeatfruit · 08/05/2019 15:01

We can all be pretentious . The Emperor's New Clothes is my favourite fairy tale!!!!

thislido · 08/05/2019 15:01

Quite, birds

ppeat I’d recommend cheering yourself up with a bit of Jeremy Deller or Cornelia Parker. Damien Hirst’s work has never done anything for me.

Maybe write to Bill And Melinda Gates about the rainforests!

thislido · 08/05/2019 15:04

Why is it pretentious though? The thoughts and feelings it provokes are real, as are those of the artist who’s made it.

I’m not really bothered about the definition of what is and isn’t art. Can’t see how it matters really.

thislido · 08/05/2019 15:05

Of course people can be pretentious about art, the same what they can be pretentious about food or clothes or holidays or entertainment. But that’s got nothing to do with those things in themselves.

DadDadDad · 08/05/2019 15:20

I'm not quite sure why you are imputing the claim that "EVERYTHING is art" to me - I don't believe that and never implied it!

I know defining art is an age-old debate, so I'm not going to get into that. However, if I experience a work of art and I'm still thinking about it the next day, or week or year, then I feel the art has some effectiveness.

If I experienced the gaffer tape and the next day I am walking around watching people behave with a heightened perception of boundaries around individuals and groups, then I would feel that the artist has achieved something (of course, that something may be transforming me into a pretentious idiot Blush ). If my only thought is "oh, that reminds me, we're out of parcel tape - I must pop to Smiths", then the art has failed. Grin

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 08/05/2019 15:37

I didn't mean to impute that to you personally Dad This conversation has reminded me about a French artist with a sense of humour who exhibited a manufactured pissoir early in the last century, imagine the shock, a punter asked him, how is it art ? He replied "Because I put my name on it".
