Personally, I think all clergy should be intellectually well-formed, certainly to a higher standard than the current average, AND properly prepared for pastoral responsibilities. That would mean being courageous enough to turn away large numbers of applicants when there is already a shortage, and radically rethinking the whole formation process. There are some excellent clergy out there on the ground, but a top level intellect and good pastoral sense, if not already present, are not especially fostered by the training process, in my experience.
In slightly more obviously related to the Archers news, Will and Clarrie's oblivion to the actual situation in his household continues to be staggering. That man is not fit to raise children; social services need to get involved and send him on a compulsory parenting course immediately.
