Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title and to @NotdeadyetBOING for being the last threadstarter. Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking of this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers I wonder where Brian and Jennifer will end up. I was very taken with the idea on the last thread that the mysterious Gills won't last very long and the house will be sold back to the Aldridges at a knockdown price.

Oh bah. Just wrote a reply to Bertrand then lost it Angry

It's her general existence that bugs me if I'm honest, but I didn't like her snappy attitude to Ben ('shouldn't you be in college?') which seems set to be growing into an extension of her attitude to Josh. And if she's got specific appointments to meet, why doesn't she make sure she and Toby have a proper calendar set up?

I'm also not too keen on her recruiting Rex for childcare when she must know he still cherishes hopes.

Anyone know about the maternity leave status thing, or whether she's actually back at work, or part-time?

BertrandRussell · 20/01/2019 13:11

But she did have Toby set up to look after Rosie-it was Toby flaked our. And Rex is Rosie’s uncle and adores her. Why wouldn’t he look after her?

BertrandRussell · 20/01/2019 13:16

But the maternity leave thing is weird. And the rounds of applause when she actually managed to order some feed online was nauseating.
I think those of us with adult/nearly adult children would recognise the Pip/Josh/Ben relationship- I remember pulling dd up on bossing her younger brother when she was about 19 . I said “hey, you’re his sister, not his mother. i’m his mother!” She said “I know-but sometimes you don’t do it right and I have to step in”

ChampooPapi · 20/01/2019 15:40

I don't know where I got a million from! I just remembered her feeling really guilty as it was such a lot of money. But was the money separate from her mothers house because if so it could be close to half a million.

I don't know why i'm a bit obsessed but the archers always do money badly, no one gets tax credits and people who are rich one minute and then poor the next to suit a story-line.

I mean surely Emma and Ed could have got a mortgage with their jobs and the amount they both work anyway, affordable home or not. Those homes are often more expensive anyway then other houses that need a bit of work ect

Join my club! I find it infuriating that they go on about how they get the agricultural bits right (the Agricultural Advisor gets mentioned in the credits) but then other important bits, eg financials, are not credible.

Hello! I’m a regular delurker/relurker and would love to become more of a regular poster on this friendly thread if possible. I could start by saying that I don’t hate Pip and I also feel a bit sorry for her as Toby said he wanted to be involved but surprise surprise he’s getting bored with the responsibility and reverting to type. Which I feel is quite realistic for his character, and actually that whole “helping out” vs actually just being a parent and doing it contrast is something you see a lot on the Relationshops boards here.

I’d also love to know what Bertrand said to her daughter in response to the parenting comment! I see older DSD do this to younger DSS quite a bit but I can’t step in with the mother comment quite so easily.

cheminotte · 20/01/2019 17:42

Does Pip actually realise that Rex fancies her?

IloveJudgeJudy · 20/01/2019 18:14

Usually a lurker, but just adding my tuppence worth re old money LSD. I definitely remember suits being sold in guineas and DM explaining to me that she felt it was a bit of a trick to make you think that goods cost less than they actually did, a bit like £4.99 sounding much less than £5.

Also, did anyone think that Chris sounded different than normal or was it my imagination?

5000FingersofDrT · 20/01/2019 18:45

There was a NuChris in 2017, Judy, but not since then. I noticed him being somehow different too, though (much more.....West Country than normal).

Re Rex's devotion to Pip.....I thought she was aware because he'd said something to that effect at one point?

MikeUniformMike · 20/01/2019 19:04

The My Wife bit didn't seem right. Pip aaaaaargh!

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 20/01/2019 19:15

What an odd episode tonight Hmm Very unusual editing style.

And how will Ian and Adam have time to care for, and look after, a baby?

Ian works such long hours, and Adam is hardly ever at home. Surely one of them must have to take some paternity leave from work.

MerdedeBrexit · 20/01/2019 19:31

Isn't Ian going to take a sabbatical once the baby is born?

SaturdayNext · 20/01/2019 22:02

I would assume Ian intends to take parental leave when the baby is born, though they have to think seriously about what happens when he goes back to work.

JessieMcJessie · 20/01/2019 22:48

Adam only seemed to have turned his mind to logistics this evening, the idiot. But Jennifer must be due another child to bring up now Ruari is more or less an adult Wink.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 20/01/2019 23:52

To be fair to Adam, a lot of parents-to-be have that moment when vague thoughts chrystalise into actual reality and it’s a shock to realise it’s really happening. Adam has had to think a lot about managing Ian’s expectations and possible disappointment up until now.

InkySplatter · 20/01/2019 23:59

I used to like Pip and not Josh but the clan brain washed me. ConfusedI read a couple of comments about her and Josh and I could never hear her the same again. It's David and Ruth's fault she's annoying. They treat her like she's superior to their other children and she behaves like she is. She huffs and puffs constantly.

Hadn't Toby done quite a few nights on the trot? He is an idiot but Pip had originally planned to parent without any involvement from him. Her surprise at Rex offering to step in was most disingenuous.

Phil looking half dead after his stint as the ass's arse. Will he be he headed for the hospice? I wondered if somebody would as it's been mentioned such a lot.

BOOP for Alistair who I've only just realised i picture as Hugh Bonneville

LillianGish · 21/01/2019 07:25

Pip has an older child superiority complex which has been encouraged by her parents. She has obviously come to everything first merely by dint of being older and has capitalised on that. Her efforts have always been directed towards the farm because her parents have welcomed and supported this, Josh has had to find his own outlets because Pip hasn’t left much room for him. They’ve only recently remembered Ben exists/discovered him in the cereal cupboard it appears he is now being directed towards the sheep though the fact is Brookfield will only support one sibling in the long term and so like Kenton, Shula and Elizabeth before them Josh and Ben (and it appears it will be those too as Pip is the anointed one) will have to plough their own furrow. I don’t find Pip particularly likeable, but a large part of that for me is down to the actress who plays her.

Eastpoint · 21/01/2019 07:58

I like the idea of Alastair looking like Hugh Bonneville Inky. Is there anyone who looks like Roger Allams? Could he be Kenton?

ADarkandStormyKnight · 21/01/2019 08:55

I really felt for Jennifer. Brian making an arse of himself and probably multiplying the legal bill after all the sacrifices she has made to keep the show on the road... can’t help wondering where this is going.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 21/01/2019 08:56

When is Kate coming back? Must be fairly soon?

grumiosmum · 21/01/2019 09:22

I know so many men like Brian.

Bumptious and arrogant, think the rules don't apply to them or that they know better or are above them. (DH, you could be included here.)

Good writing.

LillianGish · 21/01/2019 09:34

Odd that Kate has not mentioned - or Spiritual Home for that matter since Home Farm was sacrificed to keep Spiritual Home going. In fact now that I write it down it just seems odd all round.

SaturdayNext · 21/01/2019 10:16

With Jennifer complaining that she hasn't got enough to do in the new house, it's pretty obvious who Adam is going to turn to for childminding.

I wonder if the familymembers/partners in the business could be called to give evidence of what Brian has admitted to them about his culpability? That could be an interesting development.

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2019 10:18

Ref. Adam n' Ian's sprog, I remember they had a conversation about Ian staying at home and doing on line chefing\ catering or some such.

MikeUniformMike · 21/01/2019 12:45

Ian and Adam as parents? It won't come to that. Lexi will take little Ada and Iman to post-B-word Bulgaria resulting in a long legal battle.
