Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title and to @NotdeadyetBOING for being the last threadstarter. Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking of this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers I wonder where Brian and Jennifer will end up. I was very taken with the idea on the last thread that the mysterious Gills won't last very long and the house will be sold back to the Aldridges at a knockdown price.

I was laughing again at Jenny up Chekhov's stepladder this afternoon when the repeat came on.

Totally bizarre storyline, the set up, the execution and Kirsty's overreaction were all really clunky

I really hope Kirsty's rotten mood spurs her on to go and do something awesome. I agree that she is (was?) a very likeable and interesting character. she always deserved better than Tom. And she's wasted folding towels in the health club, and living with dreary bloody roy. the SWs seem to hate her in some way. She's had some shitty luck over the years poor cow.

BikingBeatrix · 15/01/2019 18:26

In a sense Philip and Lee have a similar role. They’ve been shoehorned in a while ago but we seem to not be getting much knowledge of them. At least Rob and Russ there’s more background.

BikingBeatrix · 15/01/2019 18:27

I should maybe add their roles aren’t terribly obvious or clear.

ChakiraChakra · 15/01/2019 18:28

Who is Philip please anybody?

glamorousgrandmother · 15/01/2019 18:37

Philip is Kirsty's boyfriend. He is a joiner/builder.

R4 · 15/01/2019 18:37

Who is Philip please anybody?
Point proved!Grin
He's a builder. Ambridge always has one builder, who gets all the work. It used to be Jason but now it's Philip. Unusually, he seems to be a good builder and is therefore taking work off Eddie. Philip is divorced with (IIRC) daughters. He is too old for Kirsty; we did think at one time that he was Shula-material.

BikingBeatrix · 15/01/2019 18:39

Philip: a character in TA. Been ‚seeing‘ Kirsty for a bit. Local builder w ex wife and young adult son. ?Welsh accent. Due to run/collapse in the half marathon that Alistair is doing and jazzer has dropped out of. Shula might have been in heat over him last year, but nothing happened and she seems less ‚in heat‘ these days. Phew!

I find it very difficult to believe that a hotel health club manager has masses of vital work-related emails that she has to deal with out of working hours. And, as pointed out, surely it would be easy enough to set up a temporary connection via mobile phones.

BikingBeatrix · 15/01/2019 18:53

I think that too, Saturday Next.

Fink · 15/01/2019 19:11

£9.60 and she paid with a coin! What coin?! It reminds me of the latest episode of the Boring Talks where the guy suggests a new £1.75 coin.

BikingBeatrix · 15/01/2019 19:13

DH suggests it’s a Brexit coin!

BikingBeatrix · 15/01/2019 19:14

Commemorative , that should say. Having typing probs tonight.

MargueritaPink · 15/01/2019 19:33

Agreed. That is a highly implausible scenario.

ppeatfruit · 15/01/2019 20:02

Ohoh Lexi's upduffed and Susan thinks it's Roy's bless her!

Why? Personal experience or just assumption? Most managers in hospitality are expected to be on call extended hours, most often to cope with staff shortages or escalations. It doesn't have to be "masses" to matter.

Nor can you assume that a 3g connection is available in the countryside.

I don't get the Kirsty hate whilst Brian is such a good fellow.
She is generally unhappy at the moment and we all have patches like that but she is a significantly better person than Brian. She lacks the public school gloss and the self interest (and the testicles).

theredjellybean · 15/01/2019 21:43

Why is kirsty gone from confident, happy young woman too bird watching grump in space of a few years.. Bizzarre

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 15/01/2019 22:44

Didn't Philip install Lilian's fancy new bathroom at the Dower House?

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2019 00:05

Nor can you assume that a 3g connection is available in the countryside.

I live in a village - not a remote one or in a hilly area - and our mobile reception is crap. Fortunately I don't think anyone is likely to accidentally cut off my broadband because for some unknown reason we got given fibre to property which I assume has more protection than a copper line - but otoh presumably would be harder to rejoin. Even apart from serious work use (I write software, need to use servers in the US all the time), not having broadband would be really annoying.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2019 00:10

Either the bbc is incredibly lax about updating its Archers pages, or at some point the SWs will get Kirsty back on track:

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/profiles/4Wd0TcnGf2mM7PqdVQGWCY4/kirsty-miller
...no mention of Phillip, but Patrick is listed.

ppeatfruit · 16/01/2019 07:06

I vaguely remember Lil's bathroom being installed, though I can't remember who did it, not a very efficient builder\plumber.

Whereas I DO remember Philip first arrived in Amb. via the Hunt Kennels that needed complete renovation and Shula got the hots for him; she was MOH and had to organise the work. He was efficient.

dairyfarmerswife · 16/01/2019 07:36

£9.60 and she paid with a coin! What coin?!

I thought it was the beep of a contactless payment, I had an internal chuckle about how change counting has moved on!

cheminotte · 16/01/2019 07:46

Just popped on to say BOOP for classic Susan .

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 07:48

Remind me again why we’re supposed to think Susan would not have dropped the remotest clue about Helen’s history when Lee was in the shop?

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 07:49

Is Shula still MOH?

EBearhug · 16/01/2019 07:59

Wouldn't have thought so - mine goes through the front garden by the wall, and up the wall into the first storey. I've thought about how easy it would be to cut through if I wasn't paying attention, when I've been out there with the secateurs. It's probably bit thicker cable, but not that much.
