Archers Many thanks to @LilianGish for the title and to @NotdeadyetBOING for being the last threadstarter. Further thanks due to @PseudoBadger for kicking of this long, long series of Archers threads and to @DadDadDad for being our resident statistician and keeping the ball rolling when Pseudo stepped back a bit.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed.

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers I wonder where Brian and Jennifer will end up. I was very taken with the idea on the last thread that the mysterious Gills won't last very long and the house will be sold back to the Aldridges at a knockdown price.

Ok, caught up with thread now - Kirsty came back to save Helen from Rob and did a great job but has rather lost her purpose now.
Also what is it with cigars? Are either Justin or Brian smokers? If not, why would they suddenly want a cigar?

AngelinaNeurosurgeon · 08/01/2019 18:37

I think Kirsty was brought back to witness Rob abusing Helen. She seems to have had a character change recently, it's a shame, plespecially as we already have unpleasant Hannah and something to hide Natasha and dypso Alice (and Pip, of course, always Pip)

DoctorTwo · 08/01/2019 18:40

The only thing I know about Capel Curig is that half Man Half Biscuit wrote about a bottleneck there. Thinking about that band makes me happy so...

AngelinaNeurosurgeon · 08/01/2019 18:46

Something tells me Alice isn’t doing Dry January...
Cheminotte I read a comment, probably on Twitter, that Alice is doing Dry January - dry sherry, dry white wine, and dry Martini ...

God, the Dopeys are so smug about not sending their kids to boarding school. Keeping in the cereal cupboard is much worse.

DerRosenkavelier · 08/01/2019 19:15

My prediction for Lily and Russ is that Freddie will sort it out.

Freddie will come out of prison, having nothing to lose, and probably have matured in a tough way, will basically tell Lily that he is a worthless cocklodger.

He may also punch Russ if Mr Jones tries to patronise him.

Thebelleofstmarys · 08/01/2019 19:38

I'm wondering if Elizabeth was pushing for Lily 's return to Russ and Manchester is due to a (currently undisclosed) incident or pash on the Rust . Can't imagine why else she 's encouraging her lovely supportive and helpful daughter to leave home again when there's clearly a role for her to play at 'LL,v and fly straight into the purse bleeding , friendship sapping arms of the Arch Cocklodger. Personally , I'd be super gluing Lily's feet to the floor.

Also - I loathed Kirsty's negative reaction to her best friend's happy snog with the fit bloke . Helen seems to be taking things with Lee slowly and sensibly, which should be a cause of celebration between them . Methinks Kirsty is showing signs of becoming a bitter , dissatisfied spinster . Don't listen to her ,Helen ! You're doing ok .

Did I mention I really hate Pip?

I have colleagues who went out for a cigar when we went to the pub at Christmas - they don't normally smoke, though one did smoke until about 12 years ago. Apparently he only wants one when he's drunk with other people.

No, I don't get it either.

HatingTheBigShow · 08/01/2019 21:43

ppeat Yes, Tom's mother is Welsh but that's my point - he's so far removed. He doesn't live in Wales, doesn't speak Welsh (particularly significant for this word), doesn't see himself as Welsh - as when he and Jazzer are jostling over national allegiances. Tom getting tattooed a word that says he has an aching longing for Mother Wales is ridiculous. Actually quite in character for him, the way he constantly jumps into schemes without ever doing any real research.

“Freddie will come out of prison, having nothing to lose, and probably have matured in a tough way, will basically tell Lily that he is a worthless cocklodger. ”

Oh i do hope so. I hope lily and russ don’t end up in a drawn out doom and gloom scenario with him making off with the gwen john. I can’t deal with all the misery.

flowerycurtain · 08/01/2019 21:51

Isn't it a bit of a posh boy thing to have a cigar. They were likely wearing salmon trousers at the same time.

Fink · 08/01/2019 22:06

We don't know that they don't normally smoke, do we? It was Adam who said he didn't, but I could imagine both Justin and Brian being social smokers. Not definitely, but it's a possibility. Justin has to live with Lillian in any case so he's already half way there as a heavy passive smoker.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/01/2019 23:27

Smoking a cigar at a party or after a special dinner seems very much the sort of thing Brian and Justin would do, even though I doubt either ever smokes cigarettes.

MargueritaPink · 09/01/2019 00:45

I think it's more of a hackneyed trope of what posh boys are supposed to do than reality.

cheminotte · 09/01/2019 07:12

I was at a wedding about a year ago and cigars were provided for everyone at the end of the meal. It felt quite show-offy and pointless to me and maybe 1/4 were smoked.

QuaterMiss · 09/01/2019 08:16

I do seem to remember Brian enjoying the odd fancy cigar over the past few decades. Returning home satisfyingly sozzled after some male only bonding evening with his chums - reporting to Jenny on the success of the gathering. (I hope this hasn't all happened entirely within my head ...)

merde I agree, Kirsty and Roy aren’t well suited at all but since when did that stop the SWs? Grin

I thought that perhaps Elizabeth wanted Lily to return to Manchester so she did not fall behind with her studies. Although she really wanted her to stay at LL. The needs of the child outweighs those of the parent , or have I been watching too much Star Trek😈

Cromercrab · 09/01/2019 08:56

Re. what 'posh boys' should smoke: I had a posh teacher at my not-posh school back in the 80's (although she probably referred to herself as a school mistress, such was her poshness) and she always said that men should not smoke cigarettes, but pipes or cigars. Cigarettes were somehow both unmasculine and non-U. Dunno how she squared that with the smoking habits of various monarchs and assorted aristos, but there you go. She said it with conviction.

I love the idea of Freddie emerging from prison to confront and see off cocklodging Russ. If Lily is also thoroughly fed up with her useless boyfriend by then as well, and grateful for the support, it would really shore up the twins as a team. They could take on LL together.

ppeatfruit · 09/01/2019 09:26

Hating Aaaah leave Tom alone; our son in law is Welsh , covered in tatts, (admittedly one is a strange violent welsh legend) but he LOVES, prefers, England and lives in London.

Hornets · 09/01/2019 09:48

Growing up in a working-class family my dad would always have a tin of cigars at Christmas time. He was an ex-smoker (gave it up when my mum got pregnant with my younger sibling) and used to smoke them with my older brother (who was adult by then).

When I turned 16 he started to offer me one Shock which I tried and liked Blush. I never became a smoker (tried cigarettes but hated them) but at Christmas if offered would have a cigar with my Dad!

Even today after a really good meal I occasionally fancy a cigar Confused

ppeatfruit · 09/01/2019 09:53

Interesting how we suddenly have Shula starring, doing the graves, AND the vicar. Perhaps their 6week sojurn is over.
