My daughter is studying at the UOS and wouldn't forgive me if I didn't go

howdyho · 02/12/2018 20:57

I am delighted to find this thread! May I join you? I've been listening on and off to TA for 30 years and have had the pleasure of meeting Caroline Boyd who was guest speaker at my local Agricultural College awards ceremony.

DadDadDad · 02/12/2018 21:07

Of course, howdy, new views always welcome. We're friendly. (Who's sniggering at the back? Hmm )

You just have to take a quick test to see if you'll fit in: name one Archers character you hate and one you love.

Fink · 02/12/2018 21:10

Welcome @howdyho, pull up a bar stool at the [Archers] and join right in, the more the merrier.

I'd love to present something at Academic Archers, definite career goal right there. I'm going to have to get realistic and actually write the PhD first though!

Is she hoping for a lift home?Grin

Welcome howdyho.

Fink · 02/12/2018 21:12

Sorry, only half finished that message, including the Archers emoticon. Blush Probably should get back to the studies ...

lottiegarbanzo · 02/12/2018 21:15

Hi @ppeatfruit apology accepted. I hadn't been here for months, dropped in for a bit of light relief and felt rather jumped upon, for something that I'm not sure was entirely to do with me.

Anyway, I'll continue to wander in and out from time to time and misjudge the pace and current preoccupations of the discussion. I'm far more used to saying something I think is insightful and being completely ignored, as the conversation washes past me Grin

bluefolder · 02/12/2018 21:20

Caroline had a massive stroke in Tuscany. Strokes are always massive....

witchmountain · 02/12/2018 22:17

Welcome howdy.

I enjoyed hearing Jill's reactions to Home Alone tonight! And now we know that Ben was allowed out of the cereal cupboard, but only within the confines of the kitchen, as Jill's helper.

LillianGish · 02/12/2018 22:17

We’re all Jill’s references to Home Alone and the unlikelihood that anyone would ever forget a child a veiled reference to Ben’s years in the cereal cupboard?

LassWiADelicateAir · 02/12/2018 22:27

I wonder what Russ is doing for Christmas?

I want to hear more Russ. The actor is brilliant. He is such an insincere slimeball he makes my flesh creep.

NorthernLurker · 02/12/2018 22:31

I can't believe Jill invited five, possibly seven people, for Christmas dinner and agreed to host it later meaning Ruth or David will have to eat then rush to the milking, without even asking Ruth or David! Whose flipping house it is!!!

witchmountain · 02/12/2018 23:13

To be fair they would all starve without her.

Fink · 02/12/2018 23:17

I think it's entirely reasonable for Jill to invite whomever she wants over for Christmas dinner. She is correct in her assumption that neither David nor Ruth will do any more towards it than possibly pour some drinks. They failed to manage to cook frozen pizza once when she was driven out by the imminent arrival of Heather pet from the arctic circle (iirc). Since the dinner will be all down to her, with Ben being let in on the secret of how to peel carrots, why shouldn't she ask their family over? Plus, being later will give Jill a chance to enjoy the church service in the morning before cooking.

In any case, they're a close family, it would seem more strange to me to not have them round for Christmas dinner (especially given Shula and Elizabeth's situations). But that's a matter of individual family dynamics I suppose.

They'll probably be able to chuck one of the less favoured children out to do the milking anyway. Josh n' Ben can vie for the title of most hard done by.

I'm more concerned as to whether the invitation will stretch to Bert and the Fairbrothers. I'd hate to think of them alone (or having to endure their toxic father).

without even asking Ruth or David! Whose flipping house it is!!!

Well Jill's of course, that is part of the problem. Ruth has spent half her married life as a lodger in the Archer house. Jill is often portrayed making cakes and odd meals but Ruth is shopping and planning the meals and often cooking them (but obviously really badly because she can't compare with Jill). David does sod all around toward the house as far as I can make out - so perhaps Jill feels the need to fill that gap.

I noted she didn't include any thought of Toby in the plans for Rosie's first special Christmas whilst being quite happy for the entire Archer clan and any other add ons.

Fink · 03/12/2018 00:06

Is she? I must have missed that. I thought that Jill ran the household single handed, certainly the kitchen element of it. That's why they ran out of food at least twice when she wasn't there, no one had time to shop, which kind of implies that when Jill is there she's the one who does it all. Have they recently reordered things so Ruth's taken charge?

C8H10N4O2 · 03/12/2018 00:10

Ruth is regularly portrayed returning from the supermarket, Jill pops into the village shop, David does sod all.

Mootsie · 03/12/2018 00:17

Ben is going to love being Jill's kitchen assistant and decide to ditch One Man and his Dog and go on MasterChef instead.

EBearhug · 03/12/2018 00:50

Ben is going to love being Jill's kitchen assistant and decide to ditch One Man and his Dog and go on MasterChef instead.

He can combine the two and throw in Britain''s Got Talent for the hat trick.

witchmountain · 03/12/2018 01:22

Perhaps by training the dog to peel carrots?

TheMadGardener · 03/12/2018 02:02

Surely Toby will get invited to join in on his daughter's first Christmas? And what about Rex and Bert?

And if Lizzie and Lily are invited to Brookfield, there'll be complications with Russ - he'll either want to tag along or insist that Lily keeps him company in Manchester.

InkySplatter · 03/12/2018 06:28

Well Lily was eager to spend Christmas at Brookfield which doesn't bode well for Russ.

cheminotte · 03/12/2018 08:00

I think you scared howdy away @Daddaddad !

Great that Jill is passing on her cooking skills to Ben. We haven’t heard that any of her children have picked up her skills.

grumiosmum · 03/12/2018 08:22

I was surprised they'd left it so late to figure out who's coming over for xmas dinner - a family like the Archers would have sorted it out weeks ago surely.

NotdeadyetBOING · 03/12/2018 08:45

Have we had proper alcoholism or drug problems? I know we've had Alastair and his gambling, but don't think there's been any rehab story line to date.

Also - I still can't stop hoping that Tobes will eff off (something 'Brighton' related, maybe) and Pip will realise that Rex is the man for her. I worry that I don't loathe Pip as much as everyone else....
