Archers Thanks to LilG for the title, and DDD for starting the last thread and the tradition of the thread starter nominating the next thread starter Grin

Lurkers are always welcome to unlurk and join in, including asking questions of the many very knowledgeable posters with a long Archers-listening history.

Don't post spoilers based on forthcoming plot synopses that you've read, there's another thread for that (and we'd love to see you over there). Once an episode has aired then it's fair game. Archers

When are they going to decide on a universal pronunciation of Ruairi? So far we have Rory, Ruaaaari, Reuri and Ben calls him Roz.

I'm sure I heard Johnny call him Rewry.

Surely it's just Rory?

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/10/2018 22:03

I had this image tonight of Tom failing to get an erection as Jazzer's face kept superimposing itself on Hannah's.

DadDadDad · 29/10/2018 22:24

Blimey, Lass, did you really need to share that image with the rest of us? Shock

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/10/2018 23:10

I thought it might be cathartic for me to have others share the burden.

C8H10N4O2 · 30/10/2018 04:51

Sherbourne isn't it for Ruari?

Half term: Saturday 20 October (after commitments) - Return Sunday 4th November, by 9.00pm

QuaterMiss · 30/10/2018 06:16

Gosh that's late. I didn't want to assume, as they've denied us the pleasure of hearing anything about his school life. (As opposed to hearing his school life, which we'd never get.)

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 30/10/2018 06:21

Lass, DDD Grin

Sherborne is a good guess but I don't think we've ever been told. BrIan, Adam and Charles Collingwood all went there.

Minimammoth · 30/10/2018 06:49

Presses cold compress to Lass’s head.
I think you need a break Lass.Grin

BertrandRussell · 30/10/2018 07:46

I thought it was Uppingham....

EBearhug · 30/10/2018 07:53

I don't think we'very ever actually been told which school Ruari's at, have we?

birdsdestiny · 30/10/2018 08:08

I know this might be a bit controversial but I don't think Tom and Hannah have done anything wrong. It's not pleasant to listen to or visualise Shock but they are free to do what they want. I think Jazzer is being a bit odd.

ADarkandStormyKnight · 30/10/2018 08:23

Hannah was extremely unsympathetic to Tom’s concern about the impact on Jazzer, including the way it has soured the working relationship. She’s divisive.

NotANotMan · 30/10/2018 08:26

I did understand why Hannah was pissed off actually. She never indicated she was into Jazzer and he's behaving like Tom has stolen her or something.

But I do think she's generally a cow.

witchmountain · 30/10/2018 08:29

Mootsie it would be more true to life if there is no universal pronunciation of Ruairi. Which is true of lots of names to an extent - Hell-in vs Hell-un vs Hell-en, but especially Irish names in England! As well as the variations in pronunciation amongst Irish people you then get the overlay of various British or other accents, plus a general level of confusion about what is correct, which leads to people hedging their bets and mumbling or sometimes switching between pronunciations.

According to the baby names board some Irish people say Rory (and that is how Frank McCourt pronounces it on an audio from one of the baby names websites) but others would say it more like Rure-ree. It’s hard for people to describe how they pronounce it because you can write something like roo-ree but how that sounds if you have rhotic ‘r’ vs non-rhotic is quite different!

I heard Ben’s pronunciation as Rors!

Northernlurker - yes! Something in the tone of that conversation made me think they were going to kiss

witchmountain · 30/10/2018 08:37

This is really I terestingnon how some of the small children were acted: amp.theguardian.com/media/2007/jun/24/radio.uknews

I had no idea Shula’s actor had acted her younger siblings as well!

OP posts:
witchmountain · 30/10/2018 09:00

Actually maybe I don’t mean rhotic because it’s at the start of each sound, but the r sounds different!

Thanks, witchmountain. That was an interesting article.

Wouldn't Ruairi have told everyone how he likes his name pronounced by now? Noluthando didn't take any prisoners! Northern Irish Ian says Rory.

I don't know why I care but 'Rewry' sets my teeth on edge Grin

I do wish I hadn't looked at the characters on the website. I'll just have to swap Ben with Josh in my head as I can no longer imagine him emerging from the cereal cupboard.

witchmountain · 30/10/2018 09:23

Wouldn't Ruairi have told everyone how he likes his name pronounced by now?

Yeah, that doesn’t work...

I think it’s easier with a name like that because there is no comparison name in English and it consists of sounds a native English speaker would make - apart from the ‘h’ it’s pretty much spelt how it’s pronounced, once you’ve heard it.

OP posts:
QuaterMiss · 30/10/2018 09:31

I rather like the fact that the pronunciation of Ruairi's name remains a mystery. It adds to his otherness and ambiguous outsider status.

And I'm torn between praying that he is unfailingly lovely to Jenny (no matter how evil he may be elsewhere) and hoping that he feels so embedded he never considers the question of gratitude to her.

Fink · 30/10/2018 10:10

witchmountain I heard Rors too, it took me ages to work out it was Ruairi, I kept thinking there was a person called Ross. I wondered if Russ had snuck in! I think it was only when they met Will that I finally worked out who it was.

NotdeadyetBOING · 30/10/2018 11:00

Hannah must go. She's grim. I'd rather she just got written out than some long, drawn-out comeuppance story line (a la Rob).

5000FingersofDrT · 30/10/2018 11:15

So frustrating, I'm missing too many eps at the moment and it sounds as though all sorts of interesting things are going on!

Iplayer ceases to be this week. BBC Sounds launch day is this Thursday, the 1st November.

witchmountain · 30/10/2018 11:28

Can you get the podcast 5000? That's how I listen to it most often.

OP posts:
InkySplatter · 30/10/2018 11:41

Notdeadyet exactly - swift. Preferably in a way that covers Neil in glory and leaves Hannah in disgrace, never to return.

My beloved Jazzer's attitude did annoy me though. It was full Ambridge.
