Archers

No, that's not a jokey exaggeration, this is really the 93rd thread in a series started by PseudoBadger five years ago! In fact, post number Star 90,000 Star in the "official" count will be made on this thread.

Archers

Lovers of The Archers welcome (along with the rest of us who have a more complicated relationship with the "TA" Smile).

One rule we try to stick to: No mentioning of future episode plotlines published in the Radio Times etc. However, once an episode has aired, say what you like!

Archers

What is going to happen to Freddie? And are we ever going to hear from Lily again?
I also am wondering what it will take for Kenton to apologise to Fallon...

Stones? Crimes!

witchmountain · 04/10/2018 10:46

Maybe not enough stones are turned...

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2018 10:48

We hear some of the day to day working of the 'main' families, mostly farming related (as is right and fitting for The Archers). We don't hear details of jobs outside the village - Ushas cases etc unless they directly intersect with ambridge.

Gersemi · 04/10/2018 10:55

I do hope someone persuades Elizabeth to keep her nose out. Freddie's life really will be absolute hell if it emerges that Mummy is trying to pull strings to get him moved - and it will emerge, it's not something the warders are likely to keep to themselves.

I liked Elizabeth's indignation about being searched with the hoi polloi. Yes, dear, you too are just another criminal's relative, get used to it.

C8H10N4O2 · 04/10/2018 11:22

Are you listening to a different programme from me!?

We don't know much about the day to day activities outside the Archer clan.

We know their jobs, the occasional mention but most of what we hear of Usha, Neil, Harrison, Alan is their village activities. We know Neil runs the pig unit, we don't know how many pigs, what food he ordered, how many vet visits etc. I don't think Usha has ever discussed a case, even during periods where she appears every week.

The fact that he is being encouraged to go for sergeant would suggest he is well regarded by his line management.

Spreadingcudweed · 04/10/2018 11:58

Perhaps premature to speculate but I wonder if this the start of the demise of Christine and, if so, who inherits her (reduced ) estate and whether that will be significant or not?

[I hope speculation doesn't = spoiler btw! Never quite sure!]

R4 · 04/10/2018 12:26

Informed speculation based on leaked info is not OK and constitutes a spoiler.
Wild speculation based on broadcast material is fine and to be encouraged!

LillianGish · 04/10/2018 12:47

Perhaps I’m being harsh, but I think Aunty Cardborad is entirely expendable - she mainly there to be the butt of Peggy’s remarks about her cooking or to demonstrate the viciousness of Hilda (in which case it will be entirely appropriate if Hilda proves to be her Nemesis). In fact it’s ironic that her accident occurred shortly after her most interesting and relevant scene for sometime - comparing notes with Fallon about the trials of being married to a policeman. I would say the SWs would be glad to be shot of her - I certainly wouldn’t miss the way they endeavour to awkwardly shoe-horn her into proceedings.

Minimammoth · 04/10/2018 12:52

Didn’t Christine blow most of her cash on Matts little venture?

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2018 12:55

Maybe they're going to have a storyline on the problems of older people 'bed blocking'? (I know it's a horrible expression for a horrible situation).

If Christine has broken something, can she return to live with Peggy (who obviously shouldn't be placed in a 'career' role)? Having being defrauded, Christine won't be able to afford The Laurels.

QuaterMiss · 04/10/2018 13:15

It does seem harsh (and one fall doesn’t usually lead to the death of an elderly person) but yes, Christine has been supplanted by Fallon so isn’t terribly necessary to the story now. Though there may be an interesting conflict if Peggy can’t afford Home Farm and The Laurels ...

Did anyone else hear hints of Fallon being pregnant yesterday?

echt · 04/10/2018 13:30

(and one fall doesn’t usually lead to the death of an elderly person)

Surely it's the nature and the severity of the fall, coupled with underlying conditions, not the number of falls that is crucial.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2018 13:52

theconversation.com/why-hip-fractures-in-the-elderly-are-often-a-death-sentence-95784

Fractures may occur more often in older people and be more serious because of underlying conditions, which also complicate recovery.

cheminotte · 04/10/2018 13:55

What hints Quater ?

MadameButterface · 04/10/2018 14:00

Just caught up this afternoon and gosh

Great post @PearTree17, you’ve said everything i think. I do wonder where they are going with this - i know someone whose relative is in prison (she is upfront that he thoroughly deserves to be there) but is being pinished above and beyond what should happen in a civilised society - as prisons are now so understaffed, certain drugs like spice are freely available and tacitly tolerated as they keep prisoners docile and compliant, and it’s much easier to quell a troubled person by allowing them to be on a dissociative drug day in day out than to deal with the issues that are actually troubling them :( i wonder if we will see freddie coming out with an actual drug problem (and shitloads of ‘debts’) in 6 months time.

Hannah continues to be the absolute WORST, i too could not make head nor tail of the karate business, although i think possibly fit karate man and the cheese queen are destined for a happy ever after, and it was a bit of business designed to motivate emma to pressgang unlikely participants, all leading to helen and mr miyagi locking eyes across a crowded dojo.

QuaterMiss · 04/10/2018 14:23

Surely it's the nature and the severity of the fall, coupled with underlying conditions, not the number of falls that is crucial.

Yes ... But - ok, take one elderly person I know. First time, slipped on pavement; was helped to get up, went home. Apparently fully recovered. Second time, slipped at home, was able to put out arm to save self. Broken arm.Sad Thus, subsequent falls more serious because less able to protect themself. Increasingly likely to incur head injuries. Becoming confused - glasses crooked, hearing aids left off. Thus less aware moving around house. And less willing to go out. Gradual decline in ... sharpness and vitality and muscle strength. So then - needs to be protected from potentially fatal falls.

That’s what I meant.

R4 · 04/10/2018 15:37

I don't agree about Fallon being pregnant. She was emotional but that was due to village gossip getting to her. She even said at one point about how she wishes everyone would go away so it could be "just us two". You wouldn't say that if baby was about to make three - unless it's so early that even she doesn't know yet.

buckingfrolicks · 04/10/2018 20:56

It popped into my mind that Fallon was pregnant I think it was her saying she was tired. Mind you on that basis half of MN is up the duff.

R4 · 04/10/2018 21:05

I might change my mind after that conversation with Kenton. It's all about Family, innit.

MadameButterface · 04/10/2018 21:07

She could be pregnant - they need someone outside the enclave to have a baby similar age to the Chosen One so they can do that compare and contrast motherhood thing they sometimes like to do, like with helen and emma

And it would kick the tension between jolene and kenton up a notch if fallon were considering leaving because of everyone’s stank attitide about freddie AND she was pregnant. She sounded pretty much over village life, and i guess harrison can go and be a copper anywhere.

HatingTheBigShow · 04/10/2018 21:52

Adam must be permanently having quaruplets if tiredness = pregnancy! I like Fallon. Pretty telling that she's doing everything she can to help Christine when Tom (I can't work out the exact family connection but he did refer to her as Auntie - is she a great aunt?) would rather be off tickling his psycho FWB.

LassWiADelicateAir · 04/10/2018 22:03

Did I mention I really hate Tom and Hannah?

Spreadingcudweed · 04/10/2018 22:04

Only just made it back on here after earlier post. Thank you very much for clarifying the definition of a spoiler R4! Much relieved!

BikingBeatrix · 04/10/2018 22:43

Yes, hating, l had to sit and think about Ambridge ‘s first family (so very tired l think l’ll be having quintuplets around my 58th birthday. ‘Tis a miracle, l tell ye - l’ll of course hand a couple of them over to Adam and lan & save Lexi) yes, Chris is Tom’s great aunt. Her brother was Tony’s father. I can’t really recall Tom having much time for auntie before this, but then it’s Tom we’re talking about.

I agree, Lass, Tom and Hannah together are several times worse than Hannah and Tom separately. I can’t see any great original story coming from this but maybe the SWs will surprise us. Or not.

A common risk in elderly people is an anaesthetic, esp GAs. And emergency anaesthesia more risky than well planned elective. So falls and serious fractures that require surgery are especially problematic as elderly people will often have other underlying conditions. Most octogenarians even very fit ones will have some degree of furring in their arteries, for example. Enough already, ‘‘tis bedtime.

I didn’t pick up Fallon being ‘pregnant tired’. I heard it as fed up with village life, upset with Kenton and others, and Jill was the last straw. Which is quite understandable IMO.

CraicMammy · 04/10/2018 22:43

Has Lexi come back to be AdamnIan’s babymama yet?
