Even if you don't have a leg(?), a life or a clue, Welcome to the first ever 85th Archers thread! Smile

Wild speculation and sensible questions always welcome - especially any newcomers.

A little game for the weekend, inspired by Timetogetup0630 and Gruach on the last thread:

Invent an explanation for how your username was the inspiration for an Archers storyline, character, etc - be creative!

My username is telling the story of Toby, Adam and Ian, although it probably needs some punctuation: Dad! Dad/Dad? Grin

dairyfarmerswife - bit too easy for you, but as professional country folk maybe you could judge the winner? Star

Credit to MrsGrindah for the clever thread title

Shula was very weird with Philip when he was talking to her about Kirsty. Phillip didn't seem to notice though!

I'm a bit surprised Philip's hunting credentials aren't a deal breaker for Kirsty.

echt · 13/02/2018 07:32

echt do you live in North America? Hence eating breakfast during the castration?

I'm in Australia, so for instance, hear the Monday evening Archers on my Tuesday morning, about 7.00.a.m. about half an hour after broadcast in the UK. So I'm hearing what happened in the past, in the future....sort of. Confused It also makes me an early respondent because I'm not caught up in the evening meal stuff.

As an aside, back in the day when the Guardian really had a Comments Is Free section, it was clogged up with Aussies who read the paper online before the Brits had got out of bed. Same thing. Hence the Aussie edition of the Guardian.

The demise of CiF is quite another thing...Hmm

Gruach · 13/02/2018 07:47

Archers couples quiz.

10/12 - though I'm sure one of their answers is wrong ...Grin

UnimaginativeNameChange1 · 13/02/2018 08:06

Bit late to the party but completely agree that Will is behaving like Rob.

He hates Ed and Emmur - which I can understand, tbh, I think I'd be upset if I found out my spouse had shagged my sibling before we got married, and then my child was mostly brought up by the pair of them.

But the dropping poison into Nic's ear, resulting in the slanging match, had a range of positive results for him:

  1. Emma upset
  2. Nic loses her job - more financially dependent on Will, more socially isolated in general
  3. Nic and Emma definitely not friends anymore. It must made Will pretty uneasy, the thought of his hated ex and obedient little wife having conversations he wasn't privy to.

Urgh.

With Shula and Phil.... Shula is absolutely desperate for male attention, isn't she? The way they were talking, I almost (but not quite) thought they'd slept together already. I wonder when Alistair will notice.

UnimaginativeNameChange1 · 13/02/2018 08:09

6/12 on the quiz.

Minimammoth · 13/02/2018 08:20

8/12 on quiz, I am amazed.

EBearhug · 13/02/2018 08:34

8, but the screen won't scroll, so I don't know which were the ones I got wrong.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 13/02/2018 08:34

11/12.

Potteryprincess30 · 13/02/2018 08:48

Why is the Archers setting Kirsty up with a man old enough to be her father? Are there no thirty something's available (it's the Archers so probably not!).

He is listed as 58 online making him over 20 years her senior as she's only mid 30s.

I find it creepy tbh

Minimammoth · 13/02/2018 09:03

Perhaps he has a son

meredintofpandiculation · 13/02/2018 09:04

The Guardian has noticed Academic Archers. Quite a good article. Apparently Susan Carter is chairing one of the sessions

meredintofpandiculation · 13/02/2018 09:11

Philip has been being set up as a "good guy" ever since he first appeared, and now appears to be the spokesperson for the Countryside Alliance. I find it rather distasteful. I wonder whether the BBC feels constrained to add "balance" to Kirsty's and Adam's views, in the same way that every item about climate change has to have its climate change denier.

MiddleClassProblem · 13/02/2018 09:20

When Philip was first in it did Shula hane a thing for him then or spend much time with him? I think it was before I listened unless it was the recent bathroom stuff.

Maybe it was just their long talk at the hunt ball that made her get the feels

MiddleClassProblem · 13/02/2018 09:21

I had assumed the hunt ball but was after she got the feels though from how it sounded

Bekabeech · 13/02/2018 09:31

11/12 and I don't agree with their answer for the one I got wrong (it wasn't one of those I half guessed).

The actress who plays Susan is a psychologist and is indeed chairing a session. Last I hear there were 11 tickets left - I'm quite excited.

Philip seems a bit old for Kirsty, and although nice - no one I know like Kirsty would go out with someone into Country Sports like Philip. It seems reminiscent of the books we read as teenagers which seemed "Romantic" then but now seem "Creepy" ie "Daddy Long Legs" etc.

ppeatfruit · 13/02/2018 09:45

I liked the sheep birthing scene , there is room for us all to know about the basics and it's a good way to get to know them through the Toby's eyes. But of course the Nick thing at the Bull was engineered by the SWs to make Toby unreliable Hmm

I say the above because the real life farming we see on the telly is a bit much for me to cope with (wimp emojji).

BuckingFrolicks2 · 13/02/2018 09:57

A prize!! A prize!! I am Thrilled at getting silver and I'd like to thank my agent my mum and dad and of course, the dear voters ....

LillianGish · 13/02/2018 10:13

First of all I don’t believe Kirsty would be attracted to someone who hunts (even if he did repair the hide). Secondly, I don’t ever recall Robert referring to Lynda as Lyndybottom??? But maybe it’s just my hearing or his enunciation. Finally, Toby is so going to deliver Pip’s baby which will be a boy, allowing for a joke about the fact that at least he doesn’t have to castrate it (ugh)

BuckingFrolicks2 · 13/02/2018 10:39

I have no imagination Lilian, but I recognise a genius prediction when I read one. Bet you're right.

I loved the Eddie and Toby scene. In fact I've got quite the crush for Toby at the moment.

Total nonsense tho that Philip would not have responded to Kirsty's "any other day" comment with "how about Thursday" rather than backing away as he did.

Bekabeech · 13/02/2018 11:38

I agree Lilian I wondered if it was a bit of foreshadowing there. Of course by the time the pipsqueak is here we'll have another editor and all could have changed.

MikeUniformMike · 13/02/2018 12:29

I thought Robert calls Lynda Lyndybot. Got them all right, but the Brian and Jenny one was a guess.

ppeatfruit · 13/02/2018 12:39

Or Lyndybum! Shock

ppeatfruit · 13/02/2018 12:43

Did anyone notice that Shula said "the "Fox' got away'" Did she mean the "drag"? Or did Cameron change the law?

BertrandRussell · 13/02/2018 12:52

They held hounds to let “Charlie” get away ( just like they always do, amirite?) then picked up the drag again.

BertrandRussell · 13/02/2018 12:54

Incidentally, have we heard the last of Brighton?
