Discuss The Archers here, the long-running thread series started by PseudoBadger. Maybe my puns will tempt her back to take the reigns?

I think Sleeping Beauty references can wait until the next thread which will probably cover much of December.

Lurkers de-lurk! New to The Archers? you're welcome here; the friendly crowd will answer your questions.

By that time we were glad to see the back of him btw. His behaviour towards his ex-wife was unsettling - he wasn't happy that she was getting married again and we had started to see flashes of anger etc.

Ceto · 15/11/2017 18:36

It was really quite weird that they seemed to take a lot of trouble to set up a whole complicated story line around Paul lying to Lill and being really controlling re his ex, only to abandon it when he dropped dead. We then had several weeks of extremely snotty-sounding crying over Jolene. I never understood what was the point of setting up all that stuff about Paul being a controlling arsehole if it was never going to go anywhere.

TheAntiBoop · 15/11/2017 19:44

So summary of tonight

Pip is a hypocritical Bitch

We are stuck with another panto being cancelled sl and a newbie to both the village and pantos has decided this can't be

Ruth is the worlds worst match maker

Vango · 15/11/2017 19:49

.....and, er, Emma....being her usual charming self.

TheAntiBoop · 15/11/2017 19:53

Yes!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/11/2017 21:29

4 minutes and 52 seconds of Pip, Ruth and Toby. I fast forwarded all of it.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/11/2017 21:30

Oh fgs more Pip. What a bore she is.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/11/2017 21:31

Oh good Toby has stood her up.

TheAntiBoop · 15/11/2017 21:33

Oh waaah, I wanted a casual relationship but now I'm pissed off you don't take this relationship seriously. You should have known I'd change my mind about wanting to go out

She really needs to have an accident with a haybaler

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/11/2017 21:35

What a terrible episode.

LillianGish · 16/11/2017 07:36

(In my memory it was positively Jamesian - heavy with unspoken realisation and shimmering intergenerational, cross-class tact. Re-writing the script is what enables me to carry on listening through the rubbish periods. I'm sure I'd be sadly disappointed if I re-heard the actual episode.) Grin That’s got me wondering if my disappointment with the way things are panning out at the moment is because I’m viewing the past through rose tinted specs. In my memory TA was wonderful character-led drama played out by convincing actors all with their own very distinctive voices - I’m harking back to the Nelson’s wine bar days, when John was the budding entrepreneur, Elizabeth before she became lady of the manor, Brian’s affair with Caroline or even more recently his affair with Siobhan. Maybe I’m just remembering it wrong - in those days the only bit I wanted to fast forward through was Tom Forest’s monologue at the start of the film.

FiveShelties · 16/11/2017 08:33

I loved Nelson, would have been in his wine bar and antiques shop everyday! His Dad Gabriel was fantastic too.

Could be giving away how long I have been listening there. Grin

R4 · 16/11/2017 08:34

I, too, have the rose tinted spectacles problem and have two possible explanations.
In ye good old days, I used to listen ... and that was it. Nowadays I can Listen Again, check facts on Lowfield, discuss nuances on here, etc. When it wasn't scrutinised, it stood up; now it's over-analysed, the cracks show.
The other observation is that it seems to have shifted since Norman Painting left. It's no longer the everyday tale of RL countryfolk. It's drama in a country setting, and it knows it. It felt like stories used to flow naturally from peoples' characters, whereas now the editorial team have issoos that they try to shoe-horn in.

Ceto · 16/11/2017 09:31

I do hope someone is going to point out how Emma had zero interest in manning the speed camera before she was up for election.

AuntyElle · 16/11/2017 09:32

I grew up hearing it as my dad listened. He gave up in disgust in the early 90s as it was "no longer about farming, just a load of whining".
I was left with the habit Confused

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2017 09:40

You forgot the Anti there's a new 'good looking' highly qualified young dairy farmer who's looking to go more 'pasture led' and is interested in the scheme at Brookfield . His name is Alfie, is obviously single, Hmm and Ruth is setting up him up with Pip!

Oh and I reckon that Lexi is going to take over the panto.

Gruach · 16/11/2017 09:40

How could anyone fast forward through Tom Forest? He was the best bit!

Grin
ppeatfruit · 16/11/2017 09:44

Aaah 'Uncle Tom' I liked him too Gruach But he was a bit of a bore.

R4 · 16/11/2017 09:48

Here's a quiz question as a resulting of this morning's googling: who is the world's longest-serving soap actor?

TeenTimesTwo · 16/11/2017 10:04

Whoever plays Peggy Woolley? My guess.

The Archers has been going on longer than Coronation Street (Bill Roach), so as the question is here, the longest Archers person would be her perhaps?

I'm guessing Jill didn't turn up until after Grace died, so after the start of ITV.

Originalfoogirl · 16/11/2017 10:04

Hi. I am Foo and I'm an Archer's Addict. Started listening around the time Nigel fell off the roof when I was doing a lot of work travel. I now tend to catch up every few days whilst I am commuting.

Did a major catch up on Wednesday but still reckon the bit from "he might die" to "I'm going to discharge myself and fly to Ecuador" was ridiculously fast. Given how long and drawn out the other storylines have been, it seems like they had to fast forward for some reason and I'm not sure why.

My money is on Shula wot dun it.

TeenTimesTwo · 16/11/2017 10:08

Hi Foo. You are only a recent listener aren't you? Grin I've probably listened my whole life including in utero!

I think they might have to wrap up the story line before current editor leaves.

R4 · 16/11/2017 10:10

Peggy Woolley (1951->) is a good guess but June Spencer had a nine year gap, which has set her back in the rankings. Jill (1957->) is Number 2. Wiki tells me that the winner is
Auntie Cardboard!Shock

TeenTimesTwo · 16/11/2017 10:18

Oh, that would make sense, though I always have trouble remembering exactly where she fits in the family (just had to look her up to check!)
