Do you think Justin is about to undergo another character change and turn out to be a bit of a Knob himself (after all he isn't treating his wife that well)? I wondered if underneath he's no better than the jury foreman and has used Lillian to help him win over hearts and minds in Ambridge. Maybe he'll take the view that he hasn't been convicted of anything and he suffered some pretty horrific injuries so all in all the fellow deserves a chance. Otherwise I just can't see why Justin would keep him on - obviously Lillian would have to disown him and then she could start being a proper support to Helen. There will have to be some contrivance to keep him Ambridge ...

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2016 12:38

If I was a shrewd businessman like Justin is supposed to be, even if I did take that line I would sure as hell want to check up on why Rob had moved jobs so often, how he wangled his work visas in the US /Canada and have a proper chat to Charlie.

glowfrog · 12/09/2016 12:45

Lillian I don't think he will turn out like Rob at all - he's cheated on his wife, yes, but she hardly seems put upon. He was the one walking on egg shells around her when she turned up.

LillianGish · 12/09/2016 12:47

The thing is Justin employed him this time on the basis that he'd employed him before. He ought to be aware of all that anyway - unfortunately for plot purposes he had to sideline Charlie and make him take the rap for what whatever mysterious cock-up (culverts aside) Knob committed last time. I really can't see any way on earth Knob could keep his job, but I have a feeling he will because for plot purposes that's the only thing that would keep him in Ambridge.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2016 12:51

Given that he has regularly changed jobs before, that wouldn't keep him - the boys will do that, if he either doesn't get residency or its some shared arrangement. If he got residency of either one he'd probably find that he 'had' to take a job a long way away just to punish Helen and her family, who are obviously tied to Bridge Farm.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2016 12:54

And there's nothing to say that Rob was 100% honest about his previous work experience when he originally applied for the Berrow farm job. e.eg the many jobs in the US could have merged into one or two on his CV. They would have had no reason to doubt his credentials till Jess's evidence in court.

LillianGish · 12/09/2016 13:01

I hope you're right Errol - I want to see Knob sacked (and evicted).

lottiegarbanzo · 12/09/2016 13:04

Lisa was the turning point with the jury wasn't she. Once she admitted that initially charming men often turned nasty, accepting that could be true of Rob (whether or not she thought one should just accept this as normal) reasonable doubt was introduced.

Karl's revelation just confirmed them in that direction I think.

AnnieNoMouse · 12/09/2016 13:06

Has Charlotte started working for Rob yet? I did wonder where Henry was yesterday given that Bruce and Ursula were both at the court. However earlier in the week Bruce(?) said that Ursula was home looking after "the boy" so I thought Charlotte wasn't actually in place yet.
But whoever was looking after Henry yesterday it would have been great opportunity for someone to collect him back, given the absence of Titcheners. (Unless Miles had turned up Shock )

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2016 13:10

Taking Henry back would have contravened the arrangements which are currently in place, and would presumably go down like a lead balloon at the next hearing.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/09/2016 13:11

Maybe Emma had him?

BertrandRussell · 12/09/2016 13:12

I'll just let out my pathetic little wail of "where is Henry's social worker?"

Helen was freed because the jury decided that she thought Henry was in danger. So how can Henry possibly stay with Rob?

BurnTheBlackSuit · 12/09/2016 13:22

The only interesting bit from the episode was after the not guilty verdicts, when Anna had to ask for Helen to be released. I assume some archaic bit of speech, but why is it/was it needed? Any law people able to help?

PitchFork · 12/09/2016 13:24

but the court order is between henry's grandparents and knob?

theredjellybean · 12/09/2016 13:40

how dare SOC say typical archers fans swear at the radio...i am so angry I have emailed radio 4 asking for an apology...i managed not to swear in it aswell !

Salutarychoring · 12/09/2016 13:50

The thing that is playing on my mind (over-invested I know!) is that Knob was always strangely attracted to Helen (or pretended he was) when she is confident and feisty even though - wierd and downright horrid dynamic this - he was hell-bent on destroying those very qualities in her. Anyway, that's what that last bit of chilling post-trial dialogue between them reminded me of.

Ho hum.

And yes, where is Henwee's social worker?

How does it work in these cases? When someone has been accused of rape and domestic abuse as part of a trial, but hasn't been directly charged in court themselves? Surely if there are grounds for doubt on these issues then "parental" rights would be rescinded?

Vango · 12/09/2016 13:52

Did you really thered? I heard him say it in a wry tone, acknowledging the frustration of many listeners. Fair comment I thought (and I don't think of myself as particularly sweary!).

Olympiathequeen · 12/09/2016 13:53

Sean o'conner the director of the last 3 years. Done eastenders so hence quite a lot of criticism. Has now left to pastures new.

theredjellybean · 12/09/2016 13:58

yes i did...and i am not a prude or school marmish about the odd swear word, and no i didn't think he was being wry..i thought he sounded frightfully patronising actually .

Salutarychoring · 12/09/2016 14:00

Btw - thought the scene when Johnny came to support his grandfather at the court was genuinely touching. Shades of Ralph Richardson and Christopher Lambert in Greystoke Grin (terrible film I know)

Vango · 12/09/2016 14:06

I don't believe Rob ever liked, never mind loved Helen. He was after only one thing, a child of his own. Jess didn't get pregnant in time so he zoned in on H (having seen her with Henry in the park). Jess's pregnancy revelation almost ruined whatever subsequent plan he had for a Bridge Farm takeover. Just how much he despises her has really come to light since the stabbing.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 12/09/2016 14:07

Did you write it in green ink too jelly just to make sure it got his attention.

Vango · 12/09/2016 14:10

i thought he sounded frightfully patronising actually .

Gosh. I thought he was being uncharacteristically self-deprecating! I just didn't believe he was a listener!!

theredjellybean · 12/09/2016 14:19

i dont get the green ink reference, and feel s bit sorry i mentioned it now as seem to be comiing across as some old Mary Whitehouse figure when nothing is further from the truth , i just didnt think that saying archers listeners swear at the radio was particularly factually accurate or appropriate or , well very nice !
Plus lots of young archers listeners..does he think they all swear at the radio.

Oh well i will push off for a bit ...

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2016 14:26

Assuming there is such a thing as a 'typical Archers listener' in the first place was a bit off, and no, we don't all swear at the radio. (well, I do - only if I'm alone in the car and not IIRC at TA. Things like a news item on stupid macho american guys shooting lions like fish in a barrel, that'll do it. Or sometimes Thought For the Day.)
