Helen knows she's not cracking up - Knob is an eggomaniac.

Are we eggshausted with this storyline?

Anyone around who was listening back when Peggy went through troubled times with her alcoholic husband??? It must have been decades ago, but I'd love an insight into what went on and how it was portrayed in very different times.

LowDudgeon · 27/03/2016 22:32

Jack Archer died in 1972. I don't think any of us were listening then!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/03/2016 22:47

Not actively! It was often on in the background when I was growing up (I was 11 in 1972) but I paid it little attention. Grin

Butteredparsnips · 27/03/2016 22:50

Grr that episode was frustrating wasn't it? I know it's Sunday, and there is clearly some sort of law that lays down that no story shall move forward on the Sabbath. But that was such a let down.

I did enjoy Peggy's comment about the hormones though. At least one character hasn't had a personality transplant. The writing of Pat on the other hand, was an abomination tonight. Just. Bloody. Communicate. With your Daughter. Listen.

R4 · 27/03/2016 22:58

Especially when she was justifying private school!Shock

It is difficult to note that Peggy's attitudes are from a different generation without being accused of ageism. The most carefully i can phrase it is that they are attitudes that people might have been more comfortable expressing one or two generations back.

It's also very difficult to suggest that CBT or counselling or whatever might have benefited people in the past. My parents are each a classic example of being from a highly dysfunctional family of very unhappy people, with all the outward trappings of adherence to social mores, and consumerist tendencies of people who needed to show how successful the husband's career was. Every now and then my mother or my father lashes out in my direction about how I'm subnormal and self-indulgent and stupid - usually because something has been said where i'm in favour of people having psychiatric or psychological help, or having autonomy over their own body, or having some form of dignity or respect that my parents think is "just stupid whinging". Sometimes I've said in response that my parents' life might have been less hard with psychological intervention like CBT for some of the issues they've faced, but it always makes them lash out and scream at me because they think I'm accusing them of being "subnormal" (as they so delightfully put it about me Hmm) and unable to cope with the normal crap that you should just get on and deal with by being a moody aggressive dysfunctional mean asshole

To be honest her comments about Helen were nothing to her rudeness about chocolate rather than simnel cake! She really did sound like a grumpy granny.

CowPatRoberts · 27/03/2016 23:21

Hi all, just been catching up and notices discussions of Helen being raped a second time (on air), I don't recall this happening. Any chance of a quick recap?

LowDudgeon · 27/03/2016 23:29

It was this one

Really horribly creepy. She was saying no & he just ignored her Sad

Also it wasn't clear from Helen's conversation whether it has been happening more regularly but not covered in script.

CowPatRoberts · 27/03/2016 23:40

Thanks Low. Horrible awful man Sad

AugustaFinkNottle · 27/03/2016 23:46

I don't expect this sort of storyline to take big steps forward every episode; it's not what happens in RL, and a nearly daily series should reflect that. What was useful was the bit when one of them directly spoke to Helen about what a great husband Rob is and she very clearly swerved it and didn't agree.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/03/2016 23:53

Last week. "I know something that will warm you up". It was very disturbing

SarfEast1cated · 27/03/2016 23:59

Didn't Rob have a partner before Helen? (I'm new to the Archers, so please be kind!) Could Helen meet up with her and compare notes - not sure where she went..
He is hideous isn't he, I found the episode where he lied about what she said to Henry really chilling. So he invited Ursula down to con her into paying for the school fees. I couldn't work out why Rob was so keen for the Irish chef to be godfather either...

LowDudgeon · 28/03/2016 00:00

He wasn't keen at all! He's extremely homophobic (one of his many charming attributes Hmm)

SarfEast1cated · 28/03/2016 00:02

He did keep hassling her about him though didn't he - I found that odd...

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 28/03/2016 00:05

Yes he had a wife. As Helen was the OW it is unlikely they will have chit chat although Jess did try to.warn her (that he was at least prone to infidelity).

Rob was pushing Hellin to.ask Ian because he was pretty confident Ian would say no after he'd told Ian that H knew about Adam and Charlie. Rob hates Ian.

EBearhug · 28/03/2016 00:05

Rob was married to Jess when they first came to Ambridge. Helen and Rob started out as an affair while he was still with Jess. Then he broke off with Helen to go back to Jess, but they broke up anyway. Jess did go round to see Helen one time to warn her off (was it only just over a year ago?) but Helen wrote it off as being a bit mad (as Rob had told her Jess was) and jealous because she (Helen) was now with Rob, so Jess couldn't have him any more.

It would be good if Helen could remember that conversation with Jess, maybe even seek her out to find out how bad it had been for Jess.

R4 · 28/03/2016 00:05

Helen is the second Mrs Titchener. She was warned by Mrs1T but, like all naive fools, thought it was different this time.
Rob wasn't keen for Ian to be godfather. Rob knew that Ian would refuse, he was forcing Helen into a corner where she had to ask and would therefore be rebuffed.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 28/03/2016 00:07

This is v true to life I think. Even if your dp is an arse if someone lays into them as Kirsry did you feel you need to defend them because otherwise they are saying what an awful choice you made. But if you are miserable and someone says he's great you must be so happy it is hard to agree.

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 28/03/2016 00:11

If I were Jess and Hellin came crying to me I'd tell her to f off I'm afraid.

selsigfach · 28/03/2016 00:11

Sarf - he was married and Helen was the OW, so sharing notes could be tricky. Rob did NOT want Ian, the chef, to be godfather. One, because he's gay and not a real man, but mostly because he was Helen's friend and she isn't allowed any of those.

selsigfach · 28/03/2016 00:16

Cross-posted with everyone!
SmallLegs - me too, if Helen just wanted to grumble about him never cleaning the sink. I'd like to think that I'd rise above the temptation to tell someone to fuck off if they told me my ex had raped them.

AugustaFinkNottle · 28/03/2016 00:24

Rob used to say Jess was insane, didn't he? It seems to be his adjective of choice for wives who don't obey orders. Let's hope Helen makes that connection.

Imbroglio · 28/03/2016 00:38

I'm really enjoying that the tea rooms are so busy and successful. Cake. So sod you, Rob!

Also did anyone wonder about Henry being so scared of the animals? Surely he is a farm boy and has been riding. Was he with Rob and scared of him?
