This is too much for me now. I need to meditate.

toldmy I am happy to be called trevtrev Smile - the full thing is a bit of a mouthful!

I thought Neil was an employee too.

I want Rob to be replaced by Mr Gently Benevolent from Bleak Expectations. Imagine him coming in from work with a silk top hat and cloak on, twirling his moustache. Even then Hellin wouldn't see him for what he was though.

BOOP again for Feebs. WAL for Deevid ordering the parlour - as pp have said - what a dope!

I'm sorry but the Tina story is a pile of pants. A shop exists to sell stuff, that is its role in life. If a manager causes sales to drop then s/he gets a warning and if things don't improve then s/he is out the door.
All this guff about 'Tina can't operate if you are looking over her shoulder' is ridiculous and I can't see why born-shopkeeperHmm Helen can't see that.
Also, as ever, the Bridge Farm finances are bonkers. Has anybody said to Helen that if her workload is reduced then so is her salary/profitshare, that if she is not going to oversee the shop then it is taken off her?

nauticant · 02/02/2015 10:25

Thread title suggestion:

The Archers: Will Hayley lead the resistance against the robotic milker and the drama-school Borg?

enochroot · 02/02/2015 11:15

I share your irritation about the Bridge farm finances, R4.

Tom is probably hard-headed enough to point out that the shop can't afford a bad manager even if Pat and Tony aren't.
Pat must report to Tom the upshot of the conversation with Helen and Rob butting in. 'Don't mind me.' Angry

TheSilveryPussycat · 02/02/2015 11:27

Did I hear right? Hellin and Rob go hunting in the week? He has a job FFS (which we never hear anything about these days).

I have always thought TA was missing a trick by not including the stables business in story lines - after all they've included Lower Loxley, and Kenton's various projects. But it should be realistic - surely it falls under the remit of the agricultural adviser?

enochroot · 02/02/2015 11:32

Is Tina employed by the shop? If so, then who's calculating the wages, national insurance, employer's contribution, PAYE.
Helen?
(For that matter who does same for the wages of Susan and Clarrie?)

Tina must be costing more than £20,000 a year, probably much more if she's a 'manager'. Presumably there's an assistant on at least minimum wage. What business is going to pay out that much to run a loss-making branch while one of the directors is lounging around at home?

ZeroFunDame · 02/02/2015 11:34

SOC would no doubt do thisHmmface at me - but how does the actor playing Rob manage to inject so much menace into "I didn't know your mother would be coming over" (or whatever he said)?

Poor Helen. If this carries on she will eventually never see another human being unless handcuffed to him. And when she dies he'll keep her body in the house for twenty years ...

enochroot · 02/02/2015 11:37

Oh yes, now she has to ask permission for her mother to visit.
Helen was associating with Emma last week. I thought that was forbidden.

enochroot · 02/02/2015 12:23

Talking of wages, how many people does Bridge farm employ?

I count Neil, Jazzer and Maurice, Susan, Clarrie, Tina and whoever Tina's assistant is (replacing Kirsty or was she unnecessary after all?)
Leaving aside the assistant who might not exist and Maurice who might have disappeared, that's 5. The directors are probably drawing a wage (but not Helen any more) so that makes 8 full or part timers for someone to prepare wage slips for etc. Oh, they must be paying Johnnie too.
Tina has to be the most expensive non-family member of staff and it must jump out a mile.

Icimoi · 02/02/2015 12:46

All this guff about 'Tina can't operate if you are looking over her shoulder' is ridiculous and I can't see why born-shopkeeperhmm Helen can't see that.

Absolutely. And if Helen had any sense she would point out that Tina isn't operating adequately without people looking over her shoulders, so how could it get any worse? But I suspect it'll come out that she is faithfully following Rob's orders.

Re the wages, Bridge Farm may get their accountant or similar to deal with that; or they'll have one of those computerised payroll packages.

PseudoBadger · 02/02/2015 13:32

I'm feeling that we should take inspiration from the first ever thread title. So "FFS Helen, he's just a manipulative, controlling, passive aggressive arse - just kick him in the nuts and dump him"?

OP posts:
BuildYourOwnSnowman · 02/02/2015 13:38

So here is my thinking on the dopey/pip weirdness

The current 'yes pip, no pip, how high did you say pip' and 'oh pip, we know you wouldn't dump spencer in a nasty way, creepy creep creep' stuff is to contrast with when she runs off with Charlie Thomas to start an environmentally deadly mega dairy, only to return 6 months later having found out Charlie was using her as a beard to find josh is now calling the shots cos the dopey parents single brain cell is still spinning between the two skulls trying to make sense of pips betrayal

That was a long sentence!

EBearhug · 02/02/2015 13:55

Helen is still turning the odd cheese and that, isn't she? So she might get twenty quid a week from that.

ppeatfruit · 02/02/2015 14:05

Pat was playing a softly softly game with knob, cleverly because he'll be hoist on his own petard when she includes Tom and maybe even Tony to confront him WITHOUT Hell.

I think that the Rob / Helen relationship is brilliantly done. As a previous poster said the actor who plays Rob makes everything sound so menacing. It's partly the way he pauses when he finds someone else at the house with Helen. He sort of says "Ah." Then long uncomfortable pause for Helen to feel that she's done the wrong thing, then something like "I didn't know your mum / Tom / Emma was coming over." The unspoken implication being that Helen either shouldn't have people over or needs to ask his permission. But of course he never actually says that because she might realise he's being unreasonable, he just manages to make her (and I suspect Pat) feel uncomfortable so that they are less likely to do it again, without Helen ever really asking herself why.

He speaks in a curiously even tone as though he's repressing anger which I find quite scary just listening to it. He manages to give the impression that he could totally lose control and become violent. I can really understand why Helen doesn't want to "upset" him. She doesn't actually seem scared of him yet though. I wonder if that will come?

The other thing he does, which I think is brilliantly written, is when he knows he's got his own way, eg over the shop in the last episode he then says "Of course if you REALLY want to / feel you need to do whatever, then you should." By that point he knows that Helen's going to do as he says but by saying that Helen falsely remembers it as being her own choice to give up work / go hunting / stop inviting Emma round / say Rob doesn't need to take a DNA test.

I think Pat is being very wise not directly confronting Rob. If she does Helen will take Rob's side and Rob will succeed in cutting Helen off from another person. Pat (and Tom?) need to try and get Helen, very gently, to the point where she is willing to stand up to Rob herself.

nauticant · 02/02/2015 14:38

Speaking of Valentines Day, does that mean we can expect a two-parter on Friday and Sunday with blow by blow slurps?

ppeatfruit · 02/02/2015 15:04

Agree about the dopeys Toomuch If as you say they've run a farm (admittedly they never BOUGHT the farm though) they would know how not to spend money before it's in the bank fgs.

HarryConnickSenior · 02/02/2015 15:25

Interesting, I just googled Timothy Watson, who is making such an excellent job of playing Rob and I see 2 things of interest: 1. His wife IRL is called Helen (she played Georgia in Brookside apparently) and 2. although he has done his fair share of stage and TV work he is best known for his "voice acting" and has voiced various computer games and animations. Which would explain why he is so good at the voice nuance- he's an RP male but we've never once got him mixed up with Tom or Charlie have we? His acting is the biggest BOOP of all for me at the moment , along with Louisza Patikas' as Helen. So chilling!

Helen also does voice acting on computer games. Although I'd not be best pleased to have her as a squad member if I were playing Call of Duty or some such.

The thing about Rob's voice is the coolness and the pausing. The "...Oh, hello X" as someone mentioned earlier. He makes Helen (and us!) aware of when he's unhappy just by these little, scary silences. He must be downright unnerving to live with. Imagine.

"I thought I'd make spag bol for dinner tonight."
"...That would be ...lovely. If that's what you really want."
"Ummmm, ok, if you don't want spag bol I've got some quiche in the freezer, I could chuck that in the oven."
"Whatever you think best, darling."
